Tonberry King is a Triple Triad card in Final Fantasy VIII used to play the minigame and for turning into items with Quezacotl's Card Mod. Tonberry King is the fifty-fourth card in the inventory and the tenth Level 5 card.
As a Level 5 card Tonberry King has middling values, but its value placements may be useful for games that use Same and/or Plus. Despite being a Level 5 Monster Card, Tonberry King is a boss and its card is thus not carded from the monster itself, but as a rare chance from enemies that can be randomly encountered.
Being akin to a boss card like those on Levels 6 and 7, Tonberry King card does not drop from any enemy. Instead, there is a 6.3% chance to get it when successfully using the Card command on a Fastitocalon or a Malboro.
Any AI Triple Triad player who uses Level 5 cards has a chance of using Tonberry King in a play, from where the player can win it in a card match.
A Tonberry King card refines into a Chef's Knife with Quezacotl's Card Mod ability, the same as the regular Tonberry card, making them interchangeable for card modding purposes. Chef's Knife becomes AP Ammo for Irvine's Shot, one of the best ammunition. The knives also become Death, which is a great junctioning spell, especially for both Status Attack and Defense.
In 1999, following the release of Final Fantasy VIII in Japan, Bandai produced a full set of collectible Triple Triad cards. The set was made up of the 110 cards as seen in the game along with 72 artwork cards and a collector's edition playing mat. The cards have a blue side and a red side. The cards have become a rare collector's item.
