Tolas Valkirk is a non-player character in Final Fantasy XIV. He is a renowned knight of the Crystarium and a friend of Mauwyl. Tolas appears during sidequests in Lakeland.
History[]
Tolas is descended from one of Lakeland's most prominent lineages of knights, his great-grandfather is said to have served Ser Ostall himself. Tolas dedicated his life to the art of war, and gained a reputation as a powerful knight for killing many sin eaters. However, when the sin eaters attacked Lakeland, his entire regiment fell in battle, and Tolas was the only survivor. During the raid, Tolas fought for his own safety above the lives of his men, so he came to have his conscience plagued by remorse considering himself a coward and unworthy to carry his grandfather's name.[1]
Mauwyl, Tolas' best friend, has become concerned about Tolas' recent strange behavior and asks the Warrior of Darkness for help with the situation. After revealing the story, Tolas declares his intention to return immediately to the battlefield to atone for his failings, an idea that is quickly rejected by Mauwyl, who insists that his friend take a break from his duties until he is fully recovered. Tolas reluctantly agrees and goes to his commander, Atli, to formally make the request. While resting in the hot springs of Clearmelt, a guard interrupts him saying that a stray sin eater attacked a supply caravan with which Mauwyl was traveling and that the young woodcutter has disappeared. Concerned for his friend, Tolas vows to return and join the search effort as soon as possible.[2] Tolas searches for Mauwyl in the forest, and when he finds his friend being attacked by a sin eater, he finds his purpose and will to fight again, and draws his sword to defend him. After everything is resolved, Tolas and Mauwyl thank the Warrior of Darkness for his help, and Tolas returns to his post.[3]
After meeting again with the Warrior of Darkness, Tolas says that he has resumed his duties with the guard and then mentions that he is about to leave for the Crystarium to place a supply order with Mauwyl. Tolas invites the Warrior of Darkness to accompany him on the journey, so that they can clear the roads to the city of menacing beasts. The two make their way without difficulty, Tolas no longer shows fear when wielding his sword, and Mauwyl's use of stink bombs to scare off the enemies is effective.[4]
On the way they find the guardsman Nielden under attack. Although they manage to defeat the monster, Tolas suffers a minor injury in the battle. Nielden insists that they go to Fort Jobb, where Callea could tend to the wound. Tolas was very impressed with the effectiveness of the ointments made by Callea and asks if he can buy a batch to take to the Imperative. Callea explains that unfortunately she barely has enough ingredients to make potions for Fort Jobb. Tolas proposes that she ask the woodcutter Mauwyl to obtain the necessary herbs. Though reluctant to impose on the kindness of strangers, Callea agrees to accompany him to the Crystarium to make the request in person. Upon hearing Tolas' proposal, Mauwyl happily agrees, and all present rejoice in what is sure to be a beneficial arrangement for all parties involved.[4]
