Toad, also known as Frog, is both a status ailment and the spell that causes it. It appears in various games in the Final Fantasy series. Toad-ed characters cannot cast any spells other than Toad, which cures the status, and their Battle Power is reduced to their base. Toad can be cured by casting Toad on an afflicted character or by using the Maiden's Kiss item.
Appearances
Final Fantasy II
Toad is dropped by sargeants in this game. In Dawn of Souls and the PSP remake, an minigame on the ice-sled can be rigged by mastering the toad spell (getting it to level 16).
Final Fantasy III
Toad is a Level 2 White Magic spell that can both inflict and remove the Toad status. Bought in Gysahl for 1,000 gil. Most of the time, the story requires players to be in Toad status. It is also commenly used as an instant Death spell much later in the game. (NES Version Only)
Final Fantasy IV
Rydia and Palom can learn Toad once they reach certain levels.
Final Fantasy V
A Level 2 Black Magic spell that costs 8 MP, causes or removes the Toad status. Toad inflicted characters can't cast spells and their attack is pitiful.
The Blue Magic, "Pond's Chorus" also causes it.
Final Fantasy VII
The Transform Materia comes with this spell. Also, an enemy skill called Frog Song causes the status along with Sleep.
Final Fantasy XI
Poroggos have a weapon skill called Frog Song that can turn a character into a frog. It also inflicts a charm effect on the character. Notorious Monster Poroggos have a more powerful version called Frog Chorus that inflicts charm on all enemies in range.
Final Fantasy Tactics
Inflicts or removes the Toad status, where character can only attack or cast Toad. Can be caused by the Black Mage's spell that costs 12 MP, the Geomancer's Torrent, Dancer's Forbidden Dance, Skyseer's Celestial Void, Netherseer's Corporeal Void, Byblos' Parasite, the sword Nagrarok, Malboro's Bad Breath, Zaler'a Toadja, Grand Cross, and Elidibs' Poisonous Frog. Cure using Maiden's Kiss or Remedy, or the magicks Esuna, Toad or Dispelna.
