Block enemy attacks. When a guard is timed perfectly,
can be used to launch up to three counterattacks.
Description
Titanic Block is Clive's Eikonic Feat ability in Final Fantasy XVI, used (default controller scheme) with when Clive has Titan equipped in battle. Pressing
mid-combat has Clive raise his arm and conjure a shield that blocks nigh any incoming enemy attack. Eikonic Feats have no cooldown and can be used freely. Pressing the attack button during a perfect guard allows Clive to counterattack up to three times.
Blocking ten times (outside of Hall of Virtue) earns the trophy Untouchable. Delivering the three-hit counter twice in one battle earns Beat Rocking Blocks.
Obtained[]
Clive gains access to Titan's powers as part of the story, during "Bolts from the Blue", after fighting a semi-primed Hugo Kupka in the crypt below Rosalith Castle.
Mechanics[]
Clive can use Titanic Block in battle, ground-based or airborne, whenever he is equipping his earth loadout, though the player can assign other elemental Eikons' mastered Eikonic Abilities as the rechargeable skills to use. Using Titanic Block brings up a shield that blocks nigh any enemy attack, both close range and projectiles. Holding maintains the guarding stance, during which Clive cannot attack (apart from via the Satellite's orbs), but can still walk, and notably, can still dodge and chain into a normal counterattack. Blocking enemy attacks fills Clive's Limit Break gauge.
Some enemies have attacks that break Clive's guard stance and dispel his shield, and he still takes damage; the player will need to dodge these attacks instead of blocking them.

Clive counters from a Precision Block.
Executing Titanic Block at the exact moment an enemy's attack is about to land triggers a Precision Block, which has a slow-motion animation. Precision-blocking earns more points in arcade mode. The time frame for performing Precision Block is the same as for a Precision Dodge, and the accessibility accessory that slows time down for dodges (Ring of Timely Focus) can also be used to precision-blocking. Pressing the attack button ( by default) immediately after precision-blocking allows Clive to deliver up to three counterattacks onto his attacker. The player can also chain a Precision Block into another Precision Block against a flurry of attacks, and then execute the counter at the end of the enemy's combo. The counter from Precision Block can itself be canceled by another Precision Block, so Clive will not be left open when countering an enemy mid-combo.
Precision-blocking can damage the enemy's will gauge and stagger them even without triggering a counterattack, if they are close to the threshold. Blocking can be used to cancel some of Clive's animations to make comboing easier and faster; e.g. it will cancel post melee combo delay.
Titanic Block can be mastered in the abilities menu by expending 800 AP to improve Limit Break gain upon blocking attacks, and though not mentioned in-game, upgrading also adds another hit to the final uppercut when using the block for countering.

Titanic Block | Use Titanic Block to block an enemy's attack. |
Precision Block | Time the block perfectly. |
Titanic Counter | Counterattack by pressing ![]() |
Titanic Counter 2 | Counterattack twice by pressing ![]() |
Titanic Counter 3 | Counterattack thrice by pressing ![]() |
Use[]
When Clive is blocking he mitigates almost all damage but cannot run or actively attack himself apart from counterattacks either from a normal dodge (when holding guard) or from Titanic Counter (from precision-blocking). The player can hold the shield up for lengths of time, but this is typically suboptimal; it is best to aim for Precision Blocks and then immediately hit the attack button for a counterattack or three. Blocking does not work against every attack in the game, however. If the player is struggling to precision-dodge or -block a certain attack, then holding the guard button is an easy way to still mitigate damage.
Spending AP to master the ability can be useful if the player blocks often, allowing the player to spam Clive's Limit Break more easily and also makes the counter slightly better.
Titanic Block's downside is that the player could simply be precision-dodging instead without needing the block, which can likewise always deliver a counterattack, or a "mini-Limit Break" with the Berserker's Ring equipped. However, counterattacking from Titanic Block deals more damage. The downside of counterattacking a boss's move is that the boss may be retaliating immediately. Dodging with Shiva's Eikonic Feat may be better than precision-blocking with Titan's Titanic Block, as the freeze effect will work on every enemy. Titanic Block's upside is that blocking builds Clive's Limit Break gauge, and can damage an enemy's will gauge.
As an alternative to Titanic Block, the player can master Raging Fist for use in any loadout and then use that for guard-countering. However, it has a cooldown.
During the chronolith trial with Titan, precision-blocking nets time bonuses: 8 seconds for three perfect blocks, and another 8 seconds for six Titanic Counters.
Etymology[]
"Titanic" describes something as of exceptional strength, size, or power, from the base word "titan", the name of the Eikon and the mythological demi-gods from Greek mythology.
