Concept artwork for Final Fantasy XIV.

Titan (ティターン, Titān?), also known as Phlegethon or Acheron, is a recurring enemy in the Final Fantasy series. He is depicted as a sword-wielding giant.

Not to be confused with the Earth-elemental summoned monster of the same name that also sometimes is fought as a boss.

Final Fantasy XIV[]

FFXIV Acheron

Phlegethon, formerly known as Acheron, is the final boss of The Labyrinth of the Ancients The Labyrinth of the Ancients. Phlegethon was a legendary hero of the commonfolk who once led a revolt against he Allagan Empire. Captured by the Empire, he was among the many revolutionaries used as test subjects by the technologist Amon, chimerically augmenting them in an attempt to achieve immortality for the Allagans. The experiments forcibly warped Phlegethon's body, turning him into a golden-skinned giant, but also broke his mind, and led to him being conditioned to serve the Empire unquestioningly.

Inserted as a reference to the Titan of the Ancients' Maze in Final Fantasy III, and named as such in the Japanese localization, Phlegethon was originally named Acheron in the English localization, after a palette swap of Titan, as the name Titan was already in use by the primal Titan. Once the developers began work on Syrcus Tower Syrcus Tower, they realized they wanted the Acheron name for enemies encountered there instead. The boss Acheron was thus renamed Phlegethon in the English localization. The change was acknowledged in-game as historians having a case of mistaken identity, mistaking the legendary hero Phlegethon as a different hero named Acheron.
