Final Fantasy Wiki

The most powerful long-range racket.

Description

Tiger Racket is a weapon for Dagger and Eiko in Final Fantasy IX, being the ultimate racket, available after advancing the Chocobo Hot and Cold quest to the point Choco turns dark blue. Tiger Racket teaches Dispel to Eiko, which removes positive status effects from a target, as well as Slow and Stop. Rackets are ranged weapons that deal Wind damage when used with the Attack command.

Obtaining it yields The Ultimate Racket achievement/trophy in the versions that support an achievements system.

Obtain[]

Quans dwelling dead pepper

Tiger Racket is found in the dive spot below Quan's Dwelling. The player needs to first advance the Chocobo Hot and Cold quest to the point Choco becomes dark blue (ocean-faring), head to Quan's Dwelling (near Treno on the world map) and stand on the ledge and look down. Zidane comments he can see something below and will call for Choco; the player needs to have a Dead Pepper in their inventory. This can be done the earliest after the player has the Blue Narciss.

Mechanics[]

Tiger Racket's damage dealt with a normal Attack is determined as follows everywhere but within Ipsen's Castle:

Base = 45 - Enemy's Defense
Bonus = [(Strength + Speed) / 2] + Rnd MOD ([(Level + Strength) / 8] + 1)
Damage = Base * Bonus

Where Rnd means a random number, while MOD means modulus operation. "Rnd MOD x" can be read as a random number between 0 and x-1.

The damage is then modified by the enemy's Protect and resistance/weakness to Wind. If the wielder were under Mini, her Bonus would be 1, and if they equip Healer, damage is converted to healing.

When in Ipsen's Castle, the stronger weapons do less damage than weaker weapons, and the Base part of the damage formula is altered to:

Base = 15 - Enemy's Defense

Rackets are ranged weapons, meaning they will do the same damage from the back row, and are thus ideal for the party's white mages. They also deal Wind damage with Attack, meaning they will do 150% damage against enemies weak to Wind, and half damage to those who resist it, and no damage to those who nullify Wind, and heal those who absorb Wind. Most flying enemies are weak to wind.

Dagger and Eiko can augment their Attack with rackets via Elem-Atk gear; by wearing a Feather Hat, Bracer, Black Belt, or Fairy Earrings simultaneously with a racket, Dagger and Eiko deal 150% damage and the effect stacks with the +50% damage already done to enemies who are weak to Wind. Wearing multiples of these Wind-enhancing equipment pieces at the same time does not stack the effect.

Use[]

Tiger Racket is the ultimate racket, available before Priest's Racket even if the player is prioritizing the Chocobo Hot and Cold quest. It is the strongest weapon Dagger and Eiko can equip by a sizeable margin, made even stronger with Wind-enhancing gear, but as Dagger and Eiko are not physical attackers, the player may prefer them with the Magic Racket for its stat- and Holy-boosting properties.

Tiger Racket is the earliest source of Dispel for Eiko.

Tetra Master[]

Tetra Master
Tiger Racket
#077
Location: Mario of the Slums in Treno Tetra Master tournament second round
Black Mage Village (Black mage no.56)
Rare Phantom in Memoria

Tiger Racket has a Tetra Master card, winnable from "Mario of the Slums" in the Tetra Master tournament that Zidane partakes in as part of the story. If the player viewed the ATE with Vivi after the first round in the tournament, they could choose whether Vivi should "pass by home" or stay in Treno. Choosing the latter will put Mario as the second opponent in the card tournament, who holds the rare Namingway card as well as Tiger Racket (but the player will miss out on scenes in Quan's Dwelling; the player can still get another Namingway card later).

In the endgame, Black mage no.56 will rarely play the Tiger Racket card. When in Memoria, the player can win the Tiger Racket card from the Rare Phantom Rare Phantom location from FFIX Remastered.
