Gloves with a thunder god's power dwelling inside.

Description

The Thunder Gloves are mid game gauntlets in Final Fantasy IX for Steiner and Freya. They teach Add Status, which allows the character to make use of their weapon's innate status effect, and Devil Killer, which boosts damage against demon type enemies. The Thunder Gloves both halve Thunder damage to the wearer, and boost the user's own Thunder damage.

Obtain[]

Thunder Gloves in Cleyra from FFIX Remastered

Thunder Gloves found in Cleyra.

The Thunder Gloves are found in Cleyra, near the water wheel under the sign that hangs from a tree. They are also bought for 1,200 gil from Cleyra, Lindblum (second storyline visit onwards), Dragon's Gate, Fossil Roo, Alexandria, Treno (after the party returns from the Outer Continent), Oeilvert, and Desert Palace. They can also be unequipped from Beatrix during the Battle of Alexandria.

Mechanics[]

The Thunder Gloves provide 16 physical Evasion and 10 Magic Evasion, improving the wearer's chance to avoid damage. The gloves halve Thunder damage to the wearer. If the character also wears a Coral Ring that absorbs Thunder, they will absorb half damage. If the character also wears a Reflect Ring that weakens them to Thunder, they take ~75% damage from Thunder attacks. Equipping other Elem-Def: Thunder gear at the same time with the Thunder Gloves does not stack the effect.

The Thunder Gloves strengthens the wearer's Thunder damage by +50%, compatible with Steiner and Beatrix's Thunder Slash, Thunder/Thundara/Thundaga Sword, and Steiner's normal attack with Coral Sword. The effect does not stack with other Elem-Atk: Thunder gear.

Use[]

The Thunder Gloves are the best gauntlets for Cleyra and Alexandria Castle. Afterward, Freya and Steiner are absent from the player's party for a long while. After the party meets up again, they can already have the Diamond Gloves from a chocograph they found while on the Outer Continent.

The abilities from the gloves are good to master and will be useful throughout the game. Add Status is generally useful to master at the earliest and Devil Killer will be useful late into the game when many enemies will belong to this enemy class.

The Thunder Gloves' ability to halve Thunder damage is not so crucial if the player already got the Coral Ring from the Festival of the Hunt. Their Thunder boost is wasted on Freya who has no Thunder-elemental abilities, but useful for Steiner's Coral Sword and Swd Mag. Thunder Slash, meanwhile, is rendered useless by a glitch.

Beatrix wears the Thunder Gloves for the brief portion she is a guest during the Battle of Alexandria; the player can swap out her superior Thunder Gloves for something weaker.

Etymology[]

Raijin is the Japanese thunder god. In Chinese Buddhism, a legend states that Fujin and Raijin were both originally evil demons who opposed Buddha. They were captured in battle with Buddha's army of heaven, and have worked as gods since then.
