Deals lightning damage.
Description
Thundaga, also known as Bolt3, is a Black Magic spell in Final Fantasy V. It is the highest-level lightning-elemental spell, acquired later in the game. The spell can be used to hit one target or an entire party. Thundaga is usable by the Black Magic skillset, can be used twice with Dualcast and Black Magic equipped, and can also be used as a Spellblade. It is also one of the spells that can be cast for free from the Wonder Wand.
Thundaga is also an enemy ability that can be cast by Barrier, Enuo, Exdeath in the first battle, Flaremancer, Fury, Melusine, Necrophobe, Neo Exdeath, and Omniscient
Obtained[]
Thundaga can be purchased for 6000 gil at Moore.
Thundaga can also be used by catching and releasing a Reflect Mage, Tiny Mage, or Dark Elemental (#235), or by breaking a Thunder Rod during battle.
Mechanics[]
As a spell, Thundaga's damage is calculated as follows:
If the target absorbs lightning, it is healed instead of damaged; if it is immune to lightning, the attack misses. If the target resists lightning, the Attack modifier in the formula is halved, but if it is weak to lightning, the modifier is doubled and the attack ignores the target's Magic Defense. Thundaga is affected by reflect.
Several pieces of equipment increase the power of elemental attacks by 50%. The bonus is applied before subtracting the opponent's Magic Defense. The weapons that boost lightning are the Black Mage's Thunder Rod and Magus Rod, and the Ranger's Thunder Bow. The Mix Elemental Power strengthens all elements.
Use[]
Thundaga is acquired midway through the game, and cannot be used through Red Magic. This means it can be used by Black Mages, but due to its relatively high MP cost, should not be used too regularly. Instead, using the lower-tier Thundara spell in normal battles may be better, until party members' levels improve to the point where Thundaga can be used commonly. As with other lightning-elemental spells, it should be used to target enemies weak to lightning.
Mystic Knights can also use Thundaga as a Spellblade once acquired. It is incredibly strong, as against non-Heavy enemy types, Thundaga Spellblade has a chance to instantly kill enemies weak to lightning; against Heavy types, it still greatly increases damage output, especially if they are weak to lightning. Because Spellblade only consumes MP once, Thundaga completely outclasses Thundara as a Spellblade, and the only reason to use Thundara at this point is if another job is equipping the Spellblade skillset at a level below 5. Using Thundaga as a Spellblade is an extremely powerful strategy against the superboss Omega
Thundaga deals considerably damage than summoning Ramuh. Later in the game, when the Black Magic spell Flare, the White Magic spell Holy, the Time Magic spell Meteor, or the summons Leviathan and Bahamut, are available, they outclass Thundaga in terms of damage. Thundaga may still deal comparable damage when targeting an enemy's elemental weakness, but for common use, Thundaga is outclassed.
