Use[]
Throw is found on the same slot as Coin, which is available on a level 2 Throw Materia or Command Materia. The slot alternates between the two abilities, allowing the player to select the one they want when it shows.
When used, Throw opens the inventory allowing a player to select an unequipped weapon to throw at an enemy. The majority of weapons can be used, with a few exceptions: Cloud's Buster Sword and Barret's Gatling Gun can't be thrown because Cloud uses Buster Sword during cutscenes, and Barret's weapon is permanently bolted to his arm. Tifa's gloves and Red XIII's hairpins also can't be thrown.
The base damage formula for Throw is as follows:
Its damage is not capped at 255, and the ability is considered long range. The damage thrown weapons deal is non-elemental and does not use the thrown weapon's attribute (e.g. Cut, Hit). As damage is based on the Strength stat, it is most useful when used by characters with high Strength: Cloud, Barret, Tifa, and Cid.
There are only a few cases in which the player would want to discard a weapon, though if they do, Throw allows it to deal potent damage during a fight. Throw can be paired with several Support Materia, though few of them are useful as it is rare that a situation will arise in which it can be used.
In the latter half of the game, the player may find several unique weapons whose resale value is only 1 gil (most characters have around three such weapons). While many of these weapons are very powerful and useful, it is unlikely a player will need to keep all of them—some of them will be superseded by later weapons, and some may belong to characters the player does not intend to put in their active battle party. The Throw command allows these surplus weapons to be used in battle for a single powerful attack, which would probably be more helpful than the measly 1 gil each they would generate by selling them.
Throw is also an enemy ability, used by Mystery Ninja. It allows the user to escape from battle.
