Gameplay[]
Thieves can be uniquely useful, as their abilities range from out of combat uses to utilizing their massive speed and agility to gain the upper hand in battle. Although it is tough to build around, their Knack for instant abilities make for a unique playing field and can take advantage of the Thief's average Strength and Intellect. Their utility with Treasure Hunter bonus is used to increase the likelihood of getting a rare drop, making for a good plunder for early-game parties.
Strengths[]
Farming. Thief is the best job to use for item grinding and collecting the highest quantity of gear and rarity of gear, making build crafting less cumbersome.
Versatile Abilities. The nature of Steal and Instant Abilities can lead to some fun combos and useful abilities from enemies such as the Guardians and Malboros, whose Instant Abilities end up being a weakness to themselves as well as the player.
Excellent Speed. With the job's Flee command and Swift Swipes/Vanguard's Stance combo effects, the Thief becomes one of the fastest jobs in terms of movement speed due to the ability to stack them with other speed enhancing buffs. This coupled with the knack for Agility, and the Thief can break enemies very quickly.
Weaknesses[]
Low Defenses. The Thief has one of the lowest Stamina and Spirit growths in the base game.
Damage Output. Compared to other jobs, the Thief doesn't put out as much damage as other Speed-type jobs such as Monk or Assassin.
Stats[]
The job gives a stat bonus to Luck and Agility, along with average Strength and Intellect. This gives the Thief increased drop rates and increased critical damage but the worse HP, Stamina, and Spirit in exchange.
The Thief can make full use of the Tyrant's ability to imbue weapons with magic when paired with its passive ability to increase the accumulation of status ailments from attacks. The Tyrant's Enchantments help by adding elemental attributes to your attacks to easily take advantage of elemental weaknesses and gain even more critical damage.
The Thief synergizes well with the Blue Mage as they are both more physical-oriented jobs that make use of enemy abilities to deal damage. With the Thief's Steal ability, it can supplement the Blue Mage's Blue Magic by using an assortment of Instant Abilities on the field.
Monk probably remains the most popular support job at any level. The Monk's stats compliment Thieves well and provide a moderate boost in total HP and means of quick attacks in melee combat. In addition, the Monk's Focus ability is useful for total damage output and damage mitigation.
