Thea Lockhart[1] is a minor character first mentioned in Final Fantasy VII, before later being depicted in Final Fantasy VII Remake Trace of Two Pasts. She is the mother of Tifa Lockhart and wife of Brian Lockhart, as the family lived together in Nibelheim. Thea passed away when Tifa was eight years old, a traumatic event that defined her childhood and left Brian as a single father.
History[]
Thea was described by other villagers as a "real hot item" who could have had married any man she chose. Brian, at around the age of thirteen, chose to stay behind in the village, when his other friends had left to look for opportunities elsewhere, so as not to miss his chance with her.[2]
At one point, Thea remarked to Tifa that Cloud Strife (referring to him as "that Strife boy") has a "face like an angel", and that while everyone loved to fawn over Sephiroth, she believed that Cloud would "grow up to be much more attractive".[3]
In 1995, Thea passed away from an illness. Her death sent shockwaves throughout the community.[4] To cope with her trauma, Tifa tried to climb Mt. Nibel, following a local legend that the spirits of the dead reside beyond its peak. Instead she slipped and fell, the accident putting her in a coma.[5]
In her mother's absence, other women from Nibelheim taught Tifa to cook, sew, and other chores that village mothers taught their daughters.[4] When trying to understand her feelings for Cloud, Tifa recalled Thea's comments about him, leading her to believe that she looked up to Cloud as a "beautiful, untouchable presence" similar to the stars in the distant sky.[3]
