The Unending Coil of Bahamut, commonly abbreviated by players as UCoB, is an Ultimate raid Ultimate raid in Final Fantasy XIV. It is the first set of "Ultimate" difficulty content, intended to be of even higher difficulty than the existing "Extreme" and "Savage" difficulty levels.

The duty comprises of a single encounter, where players first fight Twintania, Nael deus Darnus, and Bahamut Prime in succession, before fighting all three together. Once Twintania and Nael deus Darnus defeated, Bahamut Prime uses an unavoidable Teraflare to KO the party, which is then resurrected by the primal Phoenix to resume the battle against a stronger, golden version of Bahamut Prime.

Story[]

There once were brave souls who uncovered the truth of the Seventh Umbral Calamity. Such trials as they overcame were not to be recorded in history, but far from fading with the passage of time, they have been imagined in vivid detail by the wandering minstrel. As his lilting melody caresses your mind's eye, you cannot help but be transported to the scene of struggle against the elder primal Bahamut...

Etymology[]

Bahamut (Arabic بهموت Bahamūt) originated as an enormous whale in ancient pre-Islamic Arabian mythology. Upon Bahamut's back stands a bull with four thousand eyes, ears, noses, mouths, tongues and feet called Kujuta (also spelled "Kuyutha") (compared with the pair of Behemoth and Leviathan). Between each of these is a distance of a 500-year journey. On the back of Kujuta is a mountain of ruby. Atop this mountain is an angel who carries six hells, earth, and seven heavens on its shoulders.

Another version of the Arabic story is that Bahamut is indeed a dragon and he stands on a whale called Liwash.

In modern times, the game Dungeons & Dragons is responsible for reimagining Bahamut as the king of dragons, a benevolent Platinum Dragon; the opposite of the malevolent Tiamat, the five-headed Chromatic Queen of Dragons.

"Twintania" is a portmanteau of the Greek name "Titania" and the prefix "twin". Titania is a character in William Shakespeare's play A Midsummer Night's Dream. The name "Titania" means "giant, great one", and is derived from Ovid's Metamorphoses, where it is an appellation given to Titan's daughters. In A Midsummer Night's Dream, Titania is the queen of the fairies.

"Akh Morn" is Dragonspeak for "circle of death" (死の輪, shi no wa?).[1][2] "Morn Afah" is Dragonspeak for "eternal death".[3]
