The Twinning is an optional Dungeon Dungeon in Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers added in patch 5.0.

Story[]

Since its sudden appearance in Norvrandt, the Crystal Tower has been a source of great mystery, one which the people of the Crystarium have barely begun to unravel. Now that the city is free from the threat of the Lightwardens, researchers have been afforded the opportunity to explore the innermost reaches of the tower, though they soon found their way barred by hordes of ferocious guardians. An aetherial disturbance detected from inside is believed to be in some way linked to their appearance, and you have been tasked with not only clearing a path for the researchers, but with investigating the cause of the anomaly.

Musical themes[]

"A Long Fall" plays at all times in the dungeon except boss battles. Like the elements which comprised the Crystal Tower of the First, the theme is a techno rock arrangement that contains elements of "Out of the Labyrinth", "Shattered", "eScape", and the "Prelude". An arrangement of "Insatiable" from Dissidia Final Fantasy NT plays when fighting Alpha Zaghnal and Mithridates, while The Primals' arrangement of "Locus" plays when fighting The Tycoon.

Behind the scenes[]

"A Long Fall" was made popular among the community through fan-made videos of dancers set to the dungeon's title screen. This, in turn, was recognized by the development team; The Primals incorporated the dance into their music video for "A Long Fall" and four developers performed as back-up dancers for the song during the 2021 Final Fantasy XIV Digital Fan Festival.

The Twinning features several enemies which originated in Final Fantasy XIII, such as Flanborg, Zaghnal, and Mithridates. The Tycoon's name may be a reference to Alexander Highwind Tycoon from Final Fantasy V. The Mark CXLIV Thermocoil Boilbuster hearkens back to the Mark XIV Thermocoil Boilmaster, a kettle present in the Omega quests.

The Ironworks datalogs found in the dungeon are numbered after the patches that introduced their subject material: 2.5 references NOAH and the Sons of Saint Coinach, 3.5 references the Thirteenth and time travel, and 4.5 references Omega.
