Walkthrough

Whisper battle

As the quest begins, walk forward to the end of the road for a cutscene. A portal opens, and passing through will begin a boss battle. Before doing this, there is the option to use the vending machine for any equipment, and talking to the other characters will lead to brief dialogue. Prepare materia and equipment before heading forward. Most damaging Magic Materia Magic Materia is unnecessary, as bosses either absorb it or are immune to it.

After heading through, a cutscene commences, following which Cloud is controlled in battle stance. Run forward along the bridge to find Tifa and Barret. They will join the party, and a battle commences against Whisper Croceo, Whisper Rubrum, Whisper Viridi, and Whisper Harbinger. The former three are the immediate threats, and each absorb a different element: Whisper Croceo absorbs Wind Wind, Whisper Viridi absorbs Lightning Lightning, and Whisper Rubrum absorbs Fire Fire. Use character abilities instead, and after dealing some damage, they will escape. Guard against Whisper Harbinger's main attack, then follow Barret and Tifa up a tunnel on the right. After a cutscene, the same bosses are fought again, though Whisper Harbinger occasionally uses ranged attacks, which should be avoided by moving around the lightning that appears. After one takes significant damage, it will disappear, and the remaining enemies should be fought instead.

After a second time, Cloud is controlled again and must run left after Barret clears a path, down to another tunnel, and Whisper Rubrum is fought alone, no longer absorbing fire. Once it is defeated, Whisper Harbinger is staggered, and all damage to Whisper Rubrum applies to Whisper Harbinger. Following this, a cutscene commences, and the party consists of Cloud and Barret against Whisper Viridi and Whisper Croceo. Use abilities against them when they are pressured. After dealing considerable damage, the two will be taken to another road, and the Whispers can use ranged attacks. Guard against them or switch to the other character when this happens. Once one loses its HP, Whisper Harbinger is staggered, and as before, Whisper Harbinger takes damage from attacks against the defeated Whisper. Destroy the remaining Whisper for the same.

With both Whispers defeated, a cutscene commences, and the party then consists of Cloud, Tifa, and Aerith. Deal damage to the Whispers and they will merge into a single form, Whisper Bahamut. This is a flying enemy that moves faster. A summon is ready once it is fought. It can use megaflare and initially resists damage, though once pressured (using a limit break from Cloud or Tifa), it becomes vulnerable. Whisper Bahamut will split back into the three forms after this, against which the strategy is the same as before: avoid their attacks and reduce one's HP to deal damage to Whisper Harbinger. This can be done with all three. Once all are done, use a spell or one of Aerith's attacks against Whisper Harbinger to defeat it. This commences a cutscene, and the option to use the menu before battle begins.

The final boss

Cloud faces Sephiroth alone. Sephiroth resists all elements, and uses melee attacks and charges powerful spells. If Sephiroth's Telluric Fury or Aerolian Onslaught attacks are dodged, he is staggered, providing a good opportunity to lay in more attacks. Cloud should use Counterstance as his main source of damage, and remain in Punisher Mode guard and counterattack. While Sephiroth charges spells, attacks can be dealt against him until he cures. Use both of these opportunities to attack him and stagger him, and after a short cutscene, get in more attacks against him until stagger ends. If the limit gauge fills, unleash it when he is staggered.

After Sephiroth loses some HP, another character—Tifa, Aerith, or Barret—may join the party. The strategy as the same as before, though as Sephiroth targets one character, switch to the other to get in damage.

After he loses more HP, another character will join. With three in the party, Sephiroth has new attacks, including the ability to infuse himself with an element (absorbing it and dealing attacks based on it), and his stagger gauge does not build from basics attacks until he is pressured after receiving enough damage. Use normal attacks, and take advantage of pressure to get in more damage.

Eventually, when Sephiroth is reduced to 20% HP, he can use Shadow Flare, which summons black holes around the battlefield, sucking characters in and dealing considerable damage. Run away from these and use character abilities whenever it is safe. Sephiroth can also use Heartless Angel against one character, reducing their HP to 1. Heal them up immediately and continue to damage Sephiroth until his HP is depleted.

Once Sephiroth is defeated, a cutscene commences, and the game is complete. Chapter Selection is unlocked, allowing any chapter to be revisited, and Hard difficulty can be selected, in which only HP is restored at rest spots and items cannot be used. The Play Log can be opened, containing possible story branches to play the game differently, the bike minigames can be skipped upon replaying, and Hojo's lab contains an additional combat simulator. To play more after this, select a chapter.

Hard mode tips

Chakra Materia Chakra Materia and Prayer Materia Prayer Materia are reliable MP-efficient sources of healing, especially on Cloud who will be in every party. Healing Materia Healing Materia should be on at least one character, as Regen Regen can be cast to good effect. Elemental Materia Elemental Materia can be paired defensively on armor with Fire Materia Fire Materia, Wind Materia Wind Materia, or Lightning Materia Lightning Materia to absorb some spells as another way to heal. Although the party members switch often, their MP does not always replenish between battles.

For most battles against the Whispers, strategies are similar to before. Counterstance is a great method dealing damage as Cloud, while Barret uses Maximum Fury at two ATB bars, Tifa uses Starshower and True Strike, and Aerith focuses on magic spells. Defeating the Whisper Harbinger will earn Barret's Sharpshooter's Compendium Vol. XIV.

Against Sephiroth, as with before, use Counterstance and Punisher Mode for damage output as Cloud. Stay defensive, and if Barret joins, use Lifesaver as him. The other characters' strategies are the same; Tifa and Aerith should stay evasive, while Barret guards as often as possible. Defeating Sephiroth earns Aerith the Telluric Scriptures Vol. XIV.
