The Path Infernal is a Final Fantasy XVI collaboration event for Final Fantasy XIV.

The event is started by accepting the sidequest A Land on Fire by talking to the neophyte adventurer at Emerald Avenue in Ul'dah - Steps of Nald (X:8.8 Y:9.8).

Story[]

The Warrior of Light talks to a neophyte adventurer in Ul'dah, who has been tasked by the wandering minstrel to find them, with the adventurer summoning the Minstrel to speak with the Warrior. The minstrel tells them about a dream he had: two shooting stars, one of bright light and another of scarlet red swooped down, until the scarlet one diverged into a "Burning Land". The minstrel believes the light shooting star refers to the Warrior, but he had no idea who or what the scarlet one is. The Warrior suspects the "Burning Land" refers to the Burning Wall in eastern Thanalan, and they head out to investigate.

Clive unconscious from FFXIV

The wandering minstrel and the Warrior of Light finding Clive unconscious.

At the Wall, the Warrior uses a spyglass and spots a strange man lying unconscious. The man recovers and he has suffered memory loss. He remembers his name is Clive and that he recalls being in some ruins. Trying to recall more than that causes him pain. The minstrel escorts Clive back to Ul'dah to be treated at Frondale's Phrontistery and asks the Warrior to meet them at Scholar's Walk.

After being treated, Clive thanks for the help, but he still can't remember anything, nor does he recognize Ul'dah. The minstrel suggests the Warrior to take Clive to Gridania, to see if he can recall anything there as the Burning Wall sits at the midpoint between the two territories. In the meantime, he will question people around eastern Thanalan about Clive.

The Warrior and Clive take an airship to Gridania. The mention of an airship intrigues Clive, as he is unfamiliar to them. The trip was exhilarating to him as well. While in Gridania, Clive can recall familiar things, his attention drawn to the aetheryte who he relates to mothercrystals, and recognizes a chocobo recalling having had one of his own, but still cannot recall anything properly. While in front of the Order of the Twin Adder barracks, Clive and the Warrior overhear a scout giving a report to Commander Heuloix about the Ixal and Garuda. The name Garuda makes Clive to remember something, and he runs to the scout to learn more, but he again feels pain. Commander Heuloix suggests Clive and Warrior speak with Elder Seedseer Kan-E-Senna, as she has better knowledge about primal summonings.

Clive in Lotus Stand from FFXIV

Clive in the Lotus Stand.

At the Lotus Stand, Kan-E Senna meets with Clive and the Warrior. Speaking of Garuda, Kan-E-Senna tells Clive that Garuda is a deity of the Ixal, who appears half-woman, half-bird and commands the wind, also mentioning that the Warrior has fought her primal form. Kan-E-Senna's description about Garuda is similar to the Garuda Clive remembers, but he remarks that the one he remembers was not a deity, but rather a mortal. The minstrel then arrives and says Eorzea's Garuda and Clive's Garuda are not one and the same. After his questionings in eastern Thanlan, the minstrel concluded that Clive is from another world, since no one recognized his description with not even the biggest rumour mongers recognising the distinct tattoo on his cheek. Clive says the tattoo is the mark of a Bearer and feels pain again when trying to remember. He also mutters the name "Ifrit", which Kan-E-Senna recognizes as the name of another primal. She concludes that Clive's memory loss stems not from illness or injury, but rather from a harrowing experience, that has caused him to instinctively suppress the memories to protect his heart. The minstrel then has an idea and asks the Warrior and Clive to meet him at Apkallu Falls.

Clive confronting the Ifrit from his world.

At Apkallu Falls, the minstrel tells Clive that in this place, Archon Louisoix gathered a group of adventurers to open a path to defeat the infernal Ifrit. Using his music, the minstrel sends the Warrior and Clive into a simulacrum of the Bowl of Embers, born of the remaining aether of the confrontation with Ifrit and their memories, where the Warrior of Light defeated the primal Ifrit, making the primal appear. Clive notices this Ifrit is not the one he knows, and it then transforms into the image that he has of Ifrit. He then remembers, what he has been doing: Ifrit killed his brother, Joshua, and since then he has been hunting the creature and avenge him. He and the Warrior take on Ifrit, and after a long battle, they push it back. Clive then says he is ready to accept the truth, that he kept blaming another to spare himself of the guilt, but he acknowledges that he is Ifrit. He then transforms into the true Ifrit and beats the shadow. Through victory, a wolf appears. The minstrel pulls both out of the simulacrum.

Clive tells the wolf is Torgal, his loyal companion. He then explains that Joshua was chosen as the Dominant of Phoenix was and destined to become the next archduke. But he was murdered by a second Dominant of Fire. Clive vowed to avenge him, only to discover he was that second Dominant. He had no knowledge such a power even existed within him, but now he intends to learn why. The minstrel deduces that Torgal appeared to lead Clive back home and that they have to return to the place where all of this began: the Burning Wall.

Clive and Torgal before returning to their world.

At the Wall, Torgal leads them to the right spot. There, minstrel reveals, why he believes the Burning Wall served as the link between Eorzea and Clive's homeworld, Valisthea. As the Seventh Umbral Calamity threatened to destroy the world, but the devastation was stopped and the land recovered. No one knows exactly why, but one theory suggests that when all seemed lost, Phoenix appeared to bring salvation. The crystalline veins at the Wall are believed to be remnants of Phoenix's flames, and thus, the Phoenix of Clive's world served as the link. Clive and Torgal then begin to dissipate and he thanks the Warrior and the minstrel, the Warrior encouraging Clive. Clive and Torgal then return to Valisthea.
