A valorous king who, with his unparalleled military might, won glory against his foes and defended his nation from harm.

Though dubbed 'the Fierce' for his ferocity in the field, Tonitrus was also a compassionate king who cared deeply for his subjects.

King of yore monument

Tonitrus Lucis Caelum, more commonly known as the Fierce, is a past king of Lucis. He appears as a statue in Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV, and as a Lucii in Final Fantasy XV; he also appears as a boss in the Windows and Royal Editions.

Profile[]

Appearance[]

His human visage unknown, as a Lucii the Fierce wears an elaborate suit of armor that resembles samurai gear. His most prominent feature is the disc on his head, which has chains attached to its underside with what look like small dogtags hanging from them. His helmet covers his entire head with four narrow slits for eyes.

Personality[]

Tonitrus is known for his merciless brutality, having wielded a great mace with such ferocity and relentlessness that he was feared as a veritable demon. He appears the most aggressive of the statues in Insomnia. However, Tonitrus was a kind, loving and just king who cared deeply for his subjects.

He is the most apologetic of the three Lucii controlled by Ardyn after being released from his brainwashing.

Abilities[]

The Fierce barrier from FFXVRE

The Fierce's gravity magic.

Known to be an exceptionally deadly fighter with his great mace, Tonitrus destroyed many enemies and was feared by his foes. Perhaps as proof of his skills, the Fierce was chosen by Ardyn to confront Noctis and his party. While brainwashed, he still wields his mace with great ferocity, destroying stone pillars that get on his way. He can warp and his controlled state uses daemonic energy to cast a gravitational sphere capable of inflicting continuous damage by sucking in anyone nearby. As his health wanes, the Fierce cloaks himself with dark energy, growing stronger. At the end of his stamina, the Fierce summons an impenetrable wall capable of damaging anyone near it. As a Guardian, the Fierce could empower his axe with light to cause craters upon hitting the ground and create a protective barrier of blue energy.

In Final Fantasy XV: Comrades, the Fierce's Sigil: Rampage allows the bearer to use powerful martial arts; when stringed together, the combos can unleash a powerful special beam of energy attack.

Story[]

The-Fierce-KGFFXV

The Fierce against a Diamond Weapon.

Tonitrus reigned as king at some point during Lucis's 2,000 year old history. After his death his soul entered the Ring of the Lucii and his spirit also came to inhabit a colossal statue likeness of him, built as a coffin that would animate at the behest of the currently reigning monarch when the Crown City of Insomnia and the Crystal are in danger. He became remembered as simply "the Fierce." His royal arm, the Mace of the Fierce, was entombed upon the Rock of Ravatogh volcano. The About the Kings of Yore document in Final Fantasy XV: Comrades posits that royal tombs were erected as a memorial to the king or queen who claimed that land in the name of Lucis, suggesting the volcano was joined in Lucis during Tonitrus's rule.

When Ardyn Izunia raids Insomnia in M.E. 734, he faces numerous The Fierce guardians protecting the city's Wall amplifiers. When Niflheim invades Insomnia over 20 years later, Nyx Ulric animates the Old Wall statues after gaining power from the Ring of the Lucii. The statues fight the Diamond Weapon, the Fierce wreaking perhaps the most damage, destroying buildings and imperial airships as he goes. Even after losing his arms the statue still continues, but is the only one who is defeated.

The Fierce enslaved by the Starscourge.

Noctis Lucis Caelum, the last of the Lucian lineage, embarks on a journey to collect the royal arms of his forebears, and inherits the Fierce's mace. After acquiring the Crystal's power, Noctis and his retinue return to the now daemon-infested Insomnia, where they come upon the Fierce enslaved by the Starscourge and must fight him. The Fierce is finished off by Noctis's friend Gladiolus Amicitia who dual-wields his greatsword with the Genji Blade to take him down.

The Lucii surround the Citadel when Noctis fights Ardyn, and after Noctis triumphs over his nemesis, he prepares to fulfill the prophecy of the True King by summoning the Lucii from the ring who kill him. Noctis emerges in the beyond where the royal arms emerge out of his body, and the Fierce joins his kin wielding his royal arm to destroy the Starscourge from the world. The Ring of the Lucii shatters, finally releasing the kings from their servitude to the Crystal.

Gameplay[]

Mace of the Fierce[]

The Mace of the Fierce is an optional royal arm found at the Rock of Ravatogh volcano. It is a mace that can easily break off enemy appendages. Its basic combo is the slowest of all weapons. Its aerial attack is a single bash and its phase-counter is an uppercut bash. When Noctis warp-strikes with it he follows the strike with a single bash, winding up to slam the mace down on the opponent. It has a long range and can hit targets that move away in spite of the slow start-up. Its parry has an enormous area of effect, useful for fighting groups of enemies while simultaneously breaking them, as parrying also doesn't consume Noctis's health. Though the warp-strike is slow, Noctis is always invincible during warp-striking, and thus isn't left wide open for enemy retaliation.

Though it is great for defeating giant monsters and daemons, it is advised to switch out the mace in the face of imperial forces due to its -50% Ballistics Resistance penalty. Otherwise, phasing with the weapon equipped will still deflect lighter bullets. Those that enjoy a pure physical build for Noctis, or bear high defense against Ballistics, may choose use this at their leisure.

Etymology[]

The Lucian royalty have three names similar to the real world Roman naming conventions of praenomen-nomen-cognomen. Tonitrus is Latin for "thunder."

Lucis, meaning "of the light", is the genitive singular form of the Latin word lux, which means "light".

Caelum means "sky" in Latin.

All of Eosian nobility have Latin names.

His Lucii form is known as the Fierce in English and Demon King in Japanese; oni (鬼) are a kind of supernatural ogres from Japanese folklore. Oni are often depicted wielding iron clubs, and the expression "oni with an iron club" means to be unbeatable, "strong beyond strong", to go overboard, or be unnecessarily powerful. Alternately, the kanji can be read in onyomi as ki, and rather than it being associated with demons and potentially evil as with the kanji of 魔, it refers to the capability of being fervent, wrathful, and fierce; one such word is kishin (鬼神), referring to deities whose anger is like that of an oni when agitated, but are still divine in their being.
