This is the FFXII field song that plays in Dalmasca's Estersand. It overflows with the energy and pride of the bustling commercial hub that is Dalmasca.

"The Dalmasca Estersand" (東ダルマスカ砂漠, Higashi Darumasuka Sabaku?, lit. Eastern Dalmasca Desert) is a theme from Final Fantasy XII, composed and arranged by Hitoshi Sakimoto. It is the field theme of the Dalmasca Estersand.

Game appearances[]

Final Fantasy XII[]

FF12 starts in the middle of a city. You begin the story in a large city, and for a little while, you do things inside its walls but the Dalmasca Estersand is where you first go when you finally venture out and do battle in the outside world. The protagonist is... well. To put it badly, he's reckless, but to put it positively, he's a very forward person. So when he goes out for the first time, he's all, "Heck yeah!" and because it's the first time you run into monsters, I composed it with the feeling of excitedly beginning a fun hunt. It has the energy of, "The adventure begins!" That's the atmosphere I wanted to bring with this track.

Piano Collections: Final Fantasy XII[]

"Estersand" moves between gentle and reflective sections, to bold and adventurous ones. This was done to reflect the contrast of an actual desert - from burning days to quiet, cool nights. The Dalmasca Eastersand is also where the character Vaan (and indeed the player) takes their first step into the wide world of Ivalice - an exciting moment that I wanted to capture in the music.

Final Fantasy Series Acoustic Arrangements[]

The Dalmasca Estersand is a wonderful song that appears as field music in the earliest stages of the game despite its grand feel. I love that contrast. In arranging it as chamber music, I focused on bringing out the flutes in full force, electing for a flute sonata.
The first half in particular has a raging scale that employs daring technical aspects, but the sequence of specific notes still feels rather soft—I think that's one of the selling points of the flute that is difficult to replicate with other instruments (and of course the technique of the performers contributes a lot to this as well!)
The main section is a bit looser in terms of musical range with a grand melody taking center stage, and I hope the flutes are a veritable feast for the ears.
I think the arrangement is relaxing overall, so I hope you feel refreshed as you enjoy it!
