"The Boundless Ocean" was first released in the original version of the game's soundtrack, of which it was the twenty-fifth track. It was subsequently re-recorded for the original soundtrack of the 3D version, of which it is the thirtieth track.
"The Boundless Ocean" is heard on the world map as the overworld theme for the submerged Surface World, until Kraken is defeated and the Water Crystal is restored.
