FFVI Thamasa WoB iOS

The remote village of Thamasa.

Thamasa (サマサ, Samasa?) is a remote village lying on the Crescent Island on the far eastern edge of the world map in Final Fantasy VI. The town is one of the last places the party visits in the World of Balance. On the surface, Thamasa is nothing more than a humble backwater village, but the villagers conceal a secret from outsiders.

The party can visit Thamasa as soon as they acquire the Blackjack, but the shopkeepers will refuse to sell them anything and there is nothing else to do at this time.

Story

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow. (Skip section)
FFVI PC Thamasa Kid

A kid in Thamasa casts Fire spell.

Thamasa was founded after the end of the War of the Magi. The Magi, humans who could use magic, were persecuted, hunted down and executed. A handful escaped and founded Thamasa well away from civilization to live in peace. The descendants of the Magi retain the ability to use magic, but it is weaker than their ancestors' as the bloodlines have waned. Publicly, magic is forbidden by the Mayor of Thamasa to avoid unwanted attention from outsiders, but citizens can be found using magic in private.

FFVI PC Relm Debut

The party meets Strago and Relm.

Terra, Locke, and Shadow arrive in Thamasa in their conjoined search for rogue espers with the Empire. They meet Strago and Relm, who insist the village is just a normal town. While they rest in the inn, Strago wakes them up with news Relm is trapped in a burning building and Strago and the townspeople reveal their ability to use magic when they try to put out the inferno.

When this fails, Strago, Locke and Terra enter the building to rescue Relm, but fall unconscious as the house begins to collapse. Shadow rescues them, and the next morning Strago tells the group the town's secret. Strago joins the party while Shadow leaves to search for the espers on his own. Strago directs the group to the Esper Caves to the west.

FFVI PC Leo Yura Thamasa

General Leo meets Yura in Thamasa.

After finding the espers, General Leo meets with their leader, Yura, to discuss the Empire's desire for peace, but Kefka arrives and tells Leo the ceasefire was a ruse to draw the espers out of hiding. In the ensuing battle Kefka kills the espers and seizes their magicite remains, and has his troops incapacitate the party before attacking the town with the intention of burning it down, as he feels it is "too boring". The effort to torch the city is either halfhearted or repelled by the magic-wielding locals, as there are no visible damages to the buildings following the battle. This does not change the overall outcome of the battle, however.

When Leo intervenes, Kefka has a shade of his fight Leo and break his spirit further by conjuring a shade of Gestahl confirming Kefka's statements. Kefka kills Leo and more espers race to the city to stop him but they, too, are dispatched before Kefka leaves the town to invade the now-empty Esper World. In the aftermath, the Returners left behind in Vector arrive in a repaired Blackjack, and General Leo is buried in a grove in a thicket of trees east of the town.

Thamasa WOR

Thamasa in the World of Ruin.

In the World of Ruin, the party brings either Shadow or Relm to Thamasa to rest after rescuing them from the Cave on the Veldt. Whom the party finds depends on if they waited for Shadow on the Floating Continent—if they waited, Shadow will have survived and is found in the cave.

Returning to Thamasa with Strago and Relm, Strago's friend Gungho tells Strago he was injured hunting Hidon, a mythical monster Strago hunted in his youth, when it reappeared at Ebot's Rock north of town. His injury encourages Strago to finish his lifelong quest and avenge Gungho.

If the party rests in the various inns around the world with Shadow, triggering Shadow's dreams, it is revealed Shadow, before he became an assassin, fled to Thamasa after his partner, Baram, was struck down by the authorities when they committed a train robbery. Shadow lived in Thamasa for an unspecified amount of time, and fathered Relm with a Thamasa citizen. To keep his past as a thief from catching up with his new family, Shadow fled the town with the family dog, Interceptor, hoping his daughter and her mother could live a normal life without him. Relm's mother died, and Strago, a friend of a family, raised her as a granddaughter. This is why, when the party first visits Thamasa, Interceptor is so friendly with Relm. It is unknown if either Shadow or Strago knows about the connection.

Spoilers end here.

Trivia

  • In Kefka's raid, he acquires a total of thirteen pieces of magicite; three from Yura and his escorts, two when the espers break down the gate and enter Thamasa, one when an esper attacks Kefka directly, and seven with the mass killing spell.
  • It is rumored Kefka was born in a Thamasan orphanage before leaving for Vector and eventually joining the Empire. However, this is false: the rumor sprung up due to a Celes x Kefka doujinshi that made up several aspects of both characters' backstories, including Kefka's childhood in Thamasa. The doujinshi was not published by Square Enix and therefore the backstory elements introduced therein should not be considered canon.
