Locke Cole

The Ten Moogles is a group of moogles who are temporarily playable in Final Fantasy VI. They live in the mines of Narshe and are led by Mog. Early in the game when Terra is being pursued by the guards, the moogles aid Locke in defending her.

Profile

In the Game Boy Advance and original Japanese versions, the ten moogles have names themed on the word "moogle", while in the Super NES version their names are themed on their signature cry "kupo". The ten moogles consist of:

• Mog's party:
  • Molulu (モルル, Moruru?) (Kuku in the SNES version). She wields a Chain Flail and is the place-filler for Sabin.
  • Moghan (モグタン, Mogutan?) (Kutan in the SNES version). He wields a Mythril Sword and is the place-filler for Celes.
  • Moguel (モグール, Mogūru?) (Kupan in the SNES version). He wields a Moonring Blade and is the place-filler for Strago.

• Locke's party:
  • Moglin (モグリン, Mogurin?) (Kupek in the SNES version). He wields a Mythril Spear and is the place-filler for Cyan.
  • Mogret (モグプウ, Mogupū?) (Kupop in the SNES version). He wields a Morning Star and is the place-filler for Shadow.
  • Moggie (モグッチ, Mogutchi?) (Kumama in the SNES version). He wields Mythril Claws and is the place-filler for Edgar.

• Mogsy's party:
  • Mogsy (モグシン, Mogushin?) (Kushu in the SNES version). He wields a Chocobo Brush and is the place-filler for Relm.
  • Mogwin (モグポン, Mogupon?) (Kurin in the SNES version). He wields a Mythril Spear and is the place-filler for Setzer.
  • Mugmug (ムグムグ, Mugumugu?) (Kuru in the SNES version). He wields a Mythril Sword and is the place-filler for Gau.
  • Cosmog (ズモモグ, Zumomogu?) (Kamog in the SNES version). He wields a Boomerang and is the place-filler for Gogo.

Story

After her Slave Crown was damaged and Terra was freed from the control of the Gestahlian Empire, she awoke in the care of Arvis. The guards of Narshe still wanted to arrest Terra, so he told her to flee into the mines. The guards cornered Terra and the floor collapsed under her, dropping her in front of the moogles' cave. Meanwhile Arvis contacted Locke to help Terra escape. Locke found Terra shortly before the guards did, but was greatly outnumbered. The moogles emerged from their cave and Locke intuited that they wanted to help him. The moogles and Locke defeated the leader of the guards and Locke escaped the mines with Terra.

Later Terra passed through the mines again with Edgar and Banon. The two briefly visited the moogles' cave, but the creatures paid them no mind. In the World of Ruin, Mog is the only moogle left in the caves.

Gameplay

The ten moogles' job is given as "Moogle". They have no specific battle commands and no Desperation Attacks. They come equipped with a Buckler for a shield, and have varying equipped weapons. The moogles have terrible stats and low HP compared to Mog, but their strength lies in the weaponry they have equipped, which is very powerful this early in the game. The player should be wary fighting the Megalodoths during the sequence, as their Snowstorm ability deals roughly 40 damage to all characters, and the player should not use their limited supply of healing items to sustain the moogles. For this reason, it is best to use all three parties at the player's command to spread out the battles and keep either Locke's or Mog's party healthy for the fight with the guard leader.

Behind the scenes

The moogles act as "place-fillers" for the other main playable characters the player can recruit, minus Umaro. If the player uses a glitch to skip recruiting one of those characters, and then encounters a story sequence that forces those characters into the party, they will be replaced with their equivalent of the ten moogles, since the game never overwrote that character's slot with the intended character data. The most famous instance of this is Moghan using the bypass event glitch to escape South Figaro in Locke's scenario without recruiting Celes; during the Battle for the Frozen Esper, Moghan will replace Celes. This specific instance is known as the "Kutan glitch" in the fan community, retaining the Super NES name for Moghan.

Cosmog's equipment is removed after the Floating Continent crashes and is added to the player's inventory. This occurs due to an oversight—the game removes all equipped items from all characters except Umaro, which includes Gogo's character slot, which is currently still occupied by Cosmog's data.

Background information states that Molulu is Mog's girlfriend. This is why Mog's unique relic is called Molulu's Charm.

The names of the ten moogles have been reused in other Final Fantasy titles, particularly Moglin.

Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia gives a nod to the group via Mog's LD Ability "March of the Moogles". Its animation shows Mog signaling the ten before they charge the enemy line and drop onto foes' heads.

Pop cultural impact

In the graphic novel series Scott Pilgrim, one of the fictional bands is named Kupek, which is also the name under which the comic's creator, Bryan Lee O'Malley, performs as a musician. Graffiti of the name Kupek can be seen in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game in area 1.

Etymology

[view · edit · purge]The moogle's Japanese name, Mōguri (モーグリ), is a portmanteau of the words for mole (土竜, mogura?) and bat (蝙蝠, kōmori?). "Moogle" is the localized version of Mōguri, losing the pun, though "moogle" has started to appear in Japanese sources as well.
