Xell?? I find it highly unlikely that he would be called "Xell" in the Japanese version. The German, Italian or French versions, maybe, but not the Japanese one. Have anything to back up this claim? --Hecko X 00:24, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
- Xounds! Someone must've xipped people's mouth shut, because there's xero proof of this! --Crazyswordsman 01:05, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
Zell in Kingdom Hearts 2[]
I dont remember his name but in kh2 there was that blonde spiky haired dude who hung out with roxas in twilight town. I know his name was completely different but. . .He had similar hair and clothes i.e. t shirt and baggy long shorts. Possibly just a coincidence but i dont know.-DiablosInferno
- Definitely not him. Could be Hayner or Roxas himself, but definitely no Zell in KH2. --Auron Kaizer 23:19, 27 June 2007 (UTC)
- Yeah, he's thinking of Hayner. I also thought he should have been called Zell. Diablocon 16:44, 28 June 2007 (UTC)
- You know, I never noticed that till you mentioned it, good inference, I kind of don`t see why they didn`t name Hayner Zell, hmm, oh well.

Zeal[]
I've wondered about this for a long while, ahs anyone else thought that Zell's name might be a refrence to zeal, he is rather zealous, I really knwo nothing I've just always had this suspicion. Thoughts? --209.226.247.138 21:55, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
- Could be...although "zell" in German means "ambition". Dincht91 03:10, 3 July 2008 (UTC)
- I think you mean "Ziel" that means "ambition"... Zell... well there is "Zelle" this means "cell" (biological and the cage) but I guess that's no connection.
Accent?[]
According to the Ruby (FFIX) Article, Zell has an accent? I never seen any evidence of this. Is this true? If not, I'll remove it from said article. --Final Aeon 15:48, November 5, 2009 (UTC)
- I also wonder. KujaRhapsodos 15:55, January 11, 2010 (UTC)

KHII connection[]
I don't think the similarity with Hayner from KHII fits on this page. They have the same kind of trousers, have spiky blond hair and have been seen doing thumbs up, but those are not very strong links. I don't remember much of KHII, but in FFVIII Seifer doesn't consider Zell his rival, just some easy target for some cheap laughs. (Zell considers Seifer as his "arch nemesis" though, as he says in the G-garden visitors' room.) If Hayner had Zell's tattoo somewhere, or was seen using his trademark Limit Breaks or even some trademark catch-phrases, there could be some link, but without anything better than this it is just a shot in the dark. The two characters are both based on a similar kind of character archetype, that doesn't make them related.Keltainentoukokuu 20:33, October 17, 2011 (UTC)
- Yeah, I agree. When I saw the picture of Hayner I was going to bring it up on the talk page but I got distracted by something. :P I think the connection is way too loose for it to be Zell. Zell and Hayner are only two hotheads who have some connection to Seifer. If Hayner used fisticuffs (great word) or something than maybe, but he uses a sword. If Nomura wanted Zell in the game he would have put Zell in it. ScatheMote 20:37, October 17, 2011 (UTC)
- I don't entirely agree that Nomura would have just put Zell in the game if he wanted to put a reference to him in it. In KH, if there's a group of friends, they're either all FF characters, or all OCs. 79.69.203.121 20:45, October 17, 2011 (UTC)
- Oh yeah. I completely forgot their relationship in the game. Been too long.
- But the thumbs, and perhaps the smile?? I don't know, but the first thing when I saw Hayner was Zell.
I typed in ""Hayner" "Zell"" into Google to see if I could get a large number of results showing this is something noticed by a large portion of the fanbase (and therefore it would be noteworthy) but half the results are fanfics. - Eh, whatever. 79.69.203.121 20:45, October 17, 2011 (UTC)
Hayner was probably based on Zell like Axel was based on Reno. You've got to admit the similarities. And for the record, Zack was in BBS because he was in a prequel to his series, so they thought he'd fit. And they usually like to keep original characters in a group of original characters. AmbieSushi 21:07, October 17, 2011 (UTC)
Does anyone have an official statement claiming hayner to be based off of zell? because if there isn't, then it truly doesnt really matter what the similarities are--ShadowsTwilight

- That's not how the wiki works, and it would be silly to do that when dealing with game series and other fictional series where authors often leave the audience to interpret things. Speculation is allowed on wiki, as long as it is incredibly founded, and common-place fan-interpretations are also allowed. While both can't exactly be measured and some would say it's just easier to not include it, is there any harm in having the Identity section on Gogo? Speculation, but founded and relevant. 79.69.199.136 22:32, October 17, 2011 (UTC)
- Seconded. One of the theories is that it's Leo, whom we see die. What's the harm in including Hayner? It's not even in the main section it's in Trivia. AmbieSushi 23:44, October 17, 2011 (UTC)
- You do know that there is a wide difference between saying Hayner is based on Zell and saying that Hayner's role in KHII is similar to Zell's in VIII. - Henryacores^ 00:10, October 18, 2011 (UTC)
- Ok, can we say they have similar personalities and features, as well as sharing similar roles? Is that better? AmbieSushi 00:51, October 18, 2011 (UTC)
- "What's the harm?" is just a rather poor argument for inclusion of anything. Otherwise we could just have anything anywhere because what's the harm after all, it's not like the internet's gonna break. The similar personalities and features would fall under the similar character archetype field, which is nothing special in terms of video game character design. Nomura keeps reusing similar kinds of designs. At the end of the day it is unknown who Hayner is based on. If Hayner's signature colours were red and blue...used a weapon called Ehrgeiz...used Dolphin Blow...Seifer would call him a chicken-wuss...flied a hoverboard...liked hotdogs...anything like that...then we could speculate he is probably a nod toward Zell. But he doesn't have stuff that is specifically attributed to Zell. He only has character traits related to a certain type of character design.Keltainentoukokuu 01:01, October 18, 2011 (UTC)
- Adding things that aren't widely recognised does cause harm to the wiki. We used to have "fan-names" of the blades in the Fusion Sword. These names were created by one person and were only recognised by like one internet community. The wiki was criticised for this. Criticism harms the wiki. On the other hand, failing to mention the similarities between Gogo from VI and Famed Mimic Gogo from FFV, and that they were likely intended to be the same character, will make the wiki look bad. While not officially stated, there are clear similarities. While the situation with Zell and Hayner isn't the same, it rests somewhere in the middle. But that's all I have on the matter. 79.69.192.191 18:30, October 18, 2011 (UTC)

A lot of fans agree that Hayner could be Zell's twin. I mean look at the first discussion on the page! They even have the same idiotic smile XD AmbieSushi 02:37, October 18, 2011 (UTC)
- You know who else could be Zell's twin? Sabin. Just check his chibi art.
- Honestly, Hayner didn't scream "Zell" at me when I came across him. Like I seriously don't see it and I think that trying to relate the two in any way, including appearance, personality, or anything but disliking Seifer is a stretch, and if we're going by disliking Seifer, that covers pretty much everyone but Rinoa. :/ Bluestarultor

- They haven't got the same body type or eye colour, but they're both blonde teenage boys. ;) Poor Seifer got so little screentime they had to establish he's an asshole in the first two hours of gameplay because after that you never just really see him again, and decided to handle it by having him insult everyone whenever there's a slightest chance. Stellar writing from Square as always. ;)Keltainentoukokuu 02:53, October 18, 2011 (UTC)
- "Maybe you forgot, I'm smart!" doesn't that sound like Zell? XD Maybe we can poll users to see what they think? AmbieSushi 10:50, October 18, 2011 (UTC)
- I believe that's very unnecessary. There is little support on the side that Hayner is copy\paste of Zell. - Henryacores^ 22:04, October 18, 2011 (UTC)
- A lot of people probably do find them similar, the thing is though, is it notable? The trivia section is a bit of a grey area because it can be less formal than the rest, but still... I don't think just anything can go there. If I was god and could decide (which I'm not) then "this dude looks like this other dude" would never qualify as "trivia". I know we have some like that now, and it seems like a popular trivia to add, a lot of people wanna do that but... I just don't think it suits the mainpage articles.Keltainentoukokuu 00:20, October 19, 2011 (UTC)
- Agreed--ShadowsTwilight
- Both are upbeat, both have spiky hair, and both are smart-elecs. But otherwise the one thing that stands out to me is hayner fought with a weapon while Zell fought with his fist. I don't think in any real way Hayner is based off Zell, and that it can be just entirely coincidental they match in some areas. Now I understand fans have theories that sometimes prove right. But not all the time...Razordash10:12, October 19, 2011 (UTC)

Etymology[]
Farfetched? The German "Ze" is pronounced "tse" not "ze" in Japanese and there is no word "dink." The PAL covers use the same screenshots in all countries. More likely the Xell screenshot is from the German version and not from a beta. Klauser 00:59, April 10, 2012 (UTC)
Tattoo[]
In the trivia section it states that Zell's tattoo resembles Mike Tyson's. Tyson got his tattoo in 2003 as far as I can tell, 4 years after the earliest release of FFVIII, no? I think it should be changed to say *Tyson's* tattoo resembles *Zell's* to keep the chronology straight, but I'd like to hear other opinions before changing it. Or if no one opposes it, then...

Should we really leave his favorite food as what was ill-placed as it is? I figure why not just refer to it as flavored bread, since that's what it originally was. Are we just waiting for the possible remake to correct that or what? --Christengo (talk) 07:47, July 12, 2014 (UTC)
- The translation stuff is already noted at the bottom of the page. We use the English terminology in the main text because, well, we're an English site, we can't really prioritise a version most of our editors and readers can't understand. -- Some Color Mage ~ (Talk) 07:54, July 12, 2014 (UTC)
