Last name

No last name? --Frusion1021 00:10, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

Doesn't seem like it. Very FFX'esque. --Hecko X 00:29, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
I miss last names. I even want minor characters to have last names like in FFVI! Crazyswordsman 05:34, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
According to Old Dalin it's Ratsbane. I played with subtitles enabled, and he said "Ratsbane" as opposed to "rat's bane." Kind of ironic though.--Sephiroth2.0 14:54, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
It could might as well be a nickname (based on a pun of "rat's bane") Old Dalin has given him, due to his job of killing rats (to those, who don't know, "bane" is a description of a person or thing that causes misery and/or death, so "Vaan Ratsbane" would be "Vaan, Killer of Rats" or simply "Vaan Ratkiller"). And all Japanese sources have turned up empty (meaning, I got no hits on "Ratsbane", in any variations, whatsoever). Even Square Enix only refer to him as "Vaan" on their official site. All Japanese reviews that I could decifer have also only introduced him as "Vaan", and nothing else. However, I'm not discerning the posibillity of his last name being "Ratsbane", it just seems unlikely. --Hecko X 16:54, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
Should we move it back to just Vaan, it might be a good idea to make note of this in the article.--Sephiroth2.0 19:00, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
No, let's keep it here, until we know for sure. Else, we'll just start moving things back and forth for no reason. However, I would like to say that the credits at the end of the game only credit him as "Vaan", but all these last names have to have come from somewhere. --Hecko X 19:40, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
They come from the official guide and the art collection. Neither seem to give the full names of any of the main characters, though. Basch's is given in the game. It's fairly safe to assume that Balthier would have the same last name as his father, Dr. Cidolfus. I'm not sure where Ashe's middle name comes from, though.--Sephiroth2.0 20:03, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
I think its pretty obvious that Migelo is saying "Vaan Rats' Bane" because he was off killing rats in a sewer. Vaan probably doesn't have a listed last name. --TacticAngel 22:03, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
Do you think the people who wrote the subtitles screwed up, then. And it was Dalan who said it.--Sephiroth2.0 22:49, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
"Ratsbane" is a nickname, not Vaan's last name. Notice that only those with titles (Basch, Balthier, Ashe) have last names. If this game's world follows the typical medieval practice (which it seems to) then if Vaan and Penelo are peasants, and do not hold titles or property and have nothing to pass on to an heir, there is no reason for either of them to have last names. Dalan is making fun of Vaan's low status by giving him a mock title. I'll tell you what, how about we leave it as Vaan, and add AKA Vaan Ratsbane, Churl. Possibly try the same for the other characters, such as Captain Basch fon Ronsenburg AKA Captain Basch, the Kingslayer. That sort of thing.Pauyasfyla 23:35, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
Hecko rules ^_^ Nice to see I wasn't the only one, beside Tactics, who came up with the "it's a nickname"-theory. But as a sidenote, it's "von Ronsenburg". It's only pronounced fon, because a German v is pronounced "fau" (when it stands alone), and as such carries an "f" sound when used in words. --Hecko X 23:57, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
Hey, I'm just going off of Smith's English localization, in which it is indeed spelled "fon". I'm guessing it was changed to sound more "fantasy-like" and less Prussian, as Prussia doesn't exist in Ivalice.Pauyasfyla 00:49, 19 November 2006 (UTC)
Actually, I was the one who remembered incorrectly, I appologize. I was pretty sure that when I had my subs on, while playing the game, that it read "I'm Basch von Ronsenburg" (When Vaan was running around saying that). --Hecko X 00:55, 19 November 2006 (UTC)
Some NPCs continue to talk about Vaan's stunt, but I don't know if any say Basch's full name.--Sephiroth2.0 16:19, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

I'm aware that there is no kana for "B". However, in the Japanese instruction manual and in the Revenant Wings trailer, his name is still spelt "Vaan". Diablocon 23:32, 7 February 2007 (UTC)

In romanji, not katakana. And the Japanese don't pronounce anything the way we do. Cake is still Cake in Japan, but it's pronounced keeki. --Crazyswordsman 23:40, 7 February 2007 (UTC)
Ah, I was unaware that the Japanese name was supposed to be phonetics, my mistake. Diablocon 23:43, 7 February 2007 (UTC)
No worries. We just try to write the names in the way they'd be spoken. For instance, Final Fantasy is pronounced "Huinaruu Huaantazyi." --Crazyswordsman 03:40, 8 February 2007 (UTC)
You're still messing up the Japanese language I see... Final Fantasy is always pronounced "Fainaru Fantajī", the spelling is just different (and on a sidenote, it's spelled "H'ainaru H'antazî" using Kunrei, not "Huinaruu Huaantazyi"...). That is why Hepburn was created, to make more sence of it for English-speakers. A Japanese would know that "hu" is pronounced "fu", but to someone just learning Japanese as a second language, this would make no sense. So Hepburn "came in" and made the rōmaji (not romanji) phonetic too. And finally, Vaan's name is spelled with the kana "ヴ", i.e. it's "Vaan", not "Baan". --Hecko X 07:11, 8 February 2007 (UTC)
I'm using it the way I learned it, okay? So please don't tell me I'm wrong, as this was the way I learned it. I also learned that Hepburn was taboo for Japanese speakers, so I'm asking you not to force me to use Hepburn and I won't force you to use JSL. --Crazyswordsman 15:31, 8 February 2007 (UTC)
I'm not forcing you to use Hepburn, all I'm saying is that romanization never changes the pronounciation of a kana. Never. However, I am sorry that I mistook JSL as Kunrei, that one is entirely my fault, the lack of accents threw me of. And Hepburn isn't taboo for Japanese speakers. Actually, it's quite the opposite. It's mandatory by law. Even in those places in Japan where it isn't mandatory by law, it's a de facto standard. This is because Hepburn generally gives a more accurate idea of how a word is supposed to be pronounced (which is what Hepburn mainly focuses on, while other romanization systems focus on grammar). --Hecko X 17:31, 8 February 2007 (UTC)

He ruined Final Fantasy 12

I've been playing final fantasy for about ten years now and I am throughly used to the less than manly leading characters they oddly seem to favor but Vaan was just far too much. I mean, goddamn, wear a friggin shirt! I hate it when guys walk around topless in the real world so why the hell would I want to play a game about it. He's a just a lame ass pansy faggot, no words of defense can be used to counter that statement. He may be the single most pathetic leading character in anything, not just video games. Terra is more manly. I just couldn't even play the game I was so disgusted by his gay little lisp. I'm not rascist, Sephiroth was gay but he was BADASS, Vaan is just a hairless little girl pussy. I hope he dies of internal injuries after being violently raped by a circus clown. Who said that?I think Vaan is awesome but opinions opinions.And you could of ranted or whatever without swearing avery second!--AF 16:08, September 7, 2009 (UTC);

...language. I admit that Vaan COULD be the worst protagonist in all of Final Fantasy, but that's no reason to sing your mouth off with every bit of colorful profanity that comes to mind. 02:30, April 29, 2012 (UTC)

Stat Help

I'm planning on placing the stats for the FF12 main characters, but I sorta need help for the table.

PS I know the stats here's Vaan's at Lv99:

HP 4818-5681 MP 204-330 Strength 77 Magic Power 64 Vitality 61 Speed 37

Sorta pointless to talk about this, but at least that's solved. btw, your design's good too, speaking of which what do you think of Vaan's stats personally i find his overrated, second highest magic power (next to Penelo and Ashe) and has the same strength as Basch at Lvs 90 and 99. Yes, I know this is a wiki and we're not supposed to express our own opinions in the article, but this is a talk page isn't it.--UndyingvsSephiroth 16:18, 8 July 2008 (UTC)

BlueHighwind TA.png

Hate Penelo too, yeah i think she's the worst character of FF12 too (not counting Revenant Wings where Flio is the worst), if they want Vaan to have a sidekick or a possible love interest, the writers should've done it better. --UndyingvsSephiroth 18:35, 8 July 2008 (UTC)

I know people do say that Vaan ruined FF XII, but surely Penelo is far, far worse? In my eyes, although Vaan is indeed all the things that everyone has said about him, and indeed more, he is (slightly) redeemed by the fact that he can fight. And plus, he shuts up towards the end of the game. Penelo however...

The Man In The Black Cape 16:50, 29 January 2009 (UTC)

I recently finished FFXII. Vaan has the Strahl for awhile, but how does he get the new airship? Did Princess Ashe reward him with enough money to buy one? Maybe I read over it and missed it in the article. I haven't played Relevant Wings if it's explained in that game.FFKnight01 16:02, 30 April 2009 (UTC)

since when did vaan had a magic power stat of 75, i thought it was 64 as read in the manual --UndyingvsSephiroth 23:15, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
It's not really elaborated upon too much in Revenant Wings, in fact he loses that airship ten minutes into the game! But from what I recall, I seem to remember him and Penelo talking about it as if he'd bought it himself, so I guess he just saved up his gil. –Nahald 19:05, 9 July 2009 (UTC)

I know its been awhile, since anyone posted anything here, but I gotta voice my opinion. Vaan is NOT a waste of space. He was basically an experiment. Personally, I liked the whole "I'm just a bystander, however due to various circumstances I have been drawn into a battle to save my country" scenario. Evnyofdeath 07:02, April 17, 2010 (UTC)

Everyone's entitled to their opinions, it's just that the more critical and vocal ones that's the loudest. I like Vaan as he is; IMHO players are so used to having been thrust a main buffed-up somebody with leet skillz, only to start XII with a nobody street urchin. 'course, citation needed. BLUER一番 02:04, April 18, 2010 (UTC)
Honestly, I liked that Vaan wasn't so in your face. In the wake of all these heroic accomplishments, everyone always ignores the grunts and regular soldiers (which is what Vaan ended up as). He and Penelo serve to remind us that for every great hero, there was an army of nameless "redshirts" who, in their own minds and the minds of those they know, were not just nameless "redshirts".--Werefang[T/A] 02:13, April 18, 2010 (UTC)

An interesting thought just occurred to me. Is it possible that the data for Vaan exists in XIII, left over from the beta? And if so, would it be possible to use him in game? Even if just as a skin, it would be interesting. Exdeath64 06:30, April 26, 2010 (UTC)

Revenant Wings

Can someone who has played the game expand the plot summary as it relates to Vaan please? Doreiku Kuroofangu 05:19, September 3, 2010 (UTC)

Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy

It is said on this page that Vaan was recruited by Cosmos. They Dissidia 012 article doesn't mention him even once. Could someone explain that to me?And by the way: Balthier is more suitable character for good side from Final Fantasy XII, don't you think?—Kaimi 15:49, September 19, 2010 (UTC)

The Dissidia 012 discussion page is abuzzed with Vaan's voice actor Booby Edner tweeting in May that the "whole wk been recording the voice for another Final Fantasy game!" and as he "play Vaan In Final Fantasy!! This is ... 2nd game voicing him". BLUER一番 16:08, September 19, 2010 (UTC)

with the entire thing about his voice actor confirming having done Vaan for an FF game recently, im 100% sure its for Dissidia 012.

in all honesty i was expecting Ashe and Vayne hero and villan, with Gabranth taking role of extra character.

but now that i think about it, Vaan probably is the best choice.

i mean hes so happy go lucky, hes nice, kind, little stupid but hey; stupidity makes things funny.

and it will defenetly be interesting seeing him interacting with the other heroes in the game. i can see him tagging along with the 5,8, 9 group due to him wanting to be a Sky Pirate, and trying to learn from Zidane to be the perfect thief!

i can also see him looking over Terra and Onion knight, like how he watched over Penelo and Kytes in FF12.

which, actually, would be kind of cute to see!

i will admit at first i was upset Vaan might be getting in, but the more i think about it the more excited i get about his inclusion.

these are the costumes im predicting he will be getting, as well as his EX Mode

what do you guys think, how do you think Vaan will interact with the characters of Dissidia?

that is, if the rumors of him getting in are trueIxbran 04:46, September 20, 2010 (UTC)

Is it possible to create a Dissidia Article for him when enough information is gathered? Vaan enters the fray with a diverse set of weapons and an ever-changing fighting style. His uses a Mist Knack as an EX Burst, but Jump doesn’t say which one.

Of course once we know more we can make the article. The problem is now we only have a lone scan, and those few sentences you said that sum up all we know. I don't want a repeat of Tifa is all. Normally what happens is a four or more page spread will come out later, probably within a week or so, we'll know more then and can create Vaan's Dissidia page then most likely. This file was on the game disk, is it actually worn by someone in-game? Drake Clawfang (talk) 11:46, June 27, 2013 (UTC)

I somehow think that is Reks's ring given to Vaan, but I have no idea why I am thinking that because I don't remember a corresponding scene from the game. In the hospital flashback Vaan leaves behind a flower and not a ring.Keltainentoukokuu (talk) 11:57, June 27, 2013 (UTC)EDIT: No Reks wears the ring in the hospital flashback. Guess he doesn't ever give it to Vaan or I don't remember him having it. You can barely see he is wearing it in this picture.Keltainentoukokuu (talk) 12:00, June 27, 2013 (UTC)
Awesome, thanks :) Drake Clawfang (talk) 12:02, June 27, 2013 (UTC)

Mention of Vaan's role

About this part in the intro section

>Vaan does not play a large role in the Final Fantasy XII story, instead being a view-point and foil, observing and contrasting the actions of others who influence the unfolding events more directly.

Not only it is debatable, I don't understand why it is necessary to include this bit in the introduction? Are the "largeness" of the part other main characters in the series plays mentioned in other pages? This just seems to be a biased opinion rather than something rooted in evidence and/or source. 12:19, May 17, 2019 (UTC)
