If this game's world follows the typical medieval practice (which it seems to) then if Vaan and Penelo are peasants, and do not hold titles or property and have nothing to pass on to an heir, there is no reason for either of them to have last names.  Dalan is making fun of Vaan's low status by giving him a mock title.  I'll tell you what, how about we leave it as Vaan, and add AKA Vaan Ratsbane, Churl.  Possibly try the same for the other characters, such as Captain Basch fon Ronsenburg AKA Captain Basch, the Kingslayer. Final Fantasy is always pronounced "Fainaru Fantajī", the spelling is just different (and on a sidenote, it's spelled "''H'ainaru H'antazî''" using Kunrei, not "''Huinaruu Huaantazyi''"...). That is why Hepburn was created, to make more sence of it for English-speakers. A Japanese would know that "hu" is pronounced "fu", but to someone just learning Japanese as a second language, this would make no sense. So Hepburn "came in" and made the rōmaji (not romanji) phonetic too. with the entire thing about his voice actor confirming having done Vaan for an FF game recently, im 100% sure its for Dissidia 012.

in all honesty i was expecting Ashe and Vayne hero and villan, with Gabranth taking role of extra character.

but now that i think about it, Vaan probably is the best choice.

i mean hes so happy go lucky, hes nice, kind, little stupid but hey; stupidity makes things funny.
