Gilgamesh: Enough expository banter!
This talk page is used for discussing improvements to the page "Noctis Lucis Caelum". It is not the place for general discussion or sharing stories about the topic of this article.

Last Name[]

I've seen somewhere else that his last name is Caelum, which would make sense, since Caelum means something like "sky" or "heaven" while Ceram means "wax".

Actually, Square Enix hadn't release the official English spelling for Nokuto's full name, only the Japanese. Bluer 18:12, 20 October 2008 (UTC)
It would make as much sense as "wax". Noctis Lucius Caelum, "Lucius Heaven of the Night". Sounds nicer, but it still is nonsensical grammatically speaking. If anything, it should be Lucius Noctis Caelum. Of course, we still have stuff like "Genesis Rhapsodos"... Faethinverba volant
In my opinion (and all that its worth), sounding nicer would make more sense, after all people (including game developers) tend to favor names that sound nice/cool, but yeah, better wait until they release the spelling in English.
We'll should wait until the official name is given in English before anything is done. Square might actually go with this, who knows? --BlueHighwind 13:10, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

Conversation with Stella[]

Did it have voice acting? Silent with subtitles just seems wrong for a PS3 game. —BfD (talk·contribs) Confirm deletion|15:07, 22 November 2008 (UTC)

No, there is no voice acting in the Versus trailers, either because they haven't hired voice actors yet, or because they aren't ready to announce them. It just shows the characters moving their mouths with subtitles. FF-Suzaku 00:51, 15 December 2008 (UTC)

Sky of the Night Light[]

Hmm... I found this a little interesting. Mainly because I'm not too sure the latin phrase is an accurate translation of his name. You see, 'Sky of the Night Light', is a phrase, true. But for three characters in his name, it wouldn't make as much sense. Would it be more accurate for it to translate into "Night Light Sky" or "Heavenly Night"? Just asking. I'm not an expert. Just a guy with questions.NtechG 04:43, 27 January 2009 (UTC)NtechGNtechG 04:43, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

I'm no expert either but I have some knowledge of the Latin language. Allow me to explain:
Noctis' name is derived from three common Latin words: Nox ("night"), Lux ("light") and Caelum ("Sky, heaven"). The first two words are inflected as used in his name, both in the genitive case (i. e. the declension that indicates possession, or, more generally speaking, a belonging relation), so that we have Noctis (nom. Nox) and Lucis (nom. Lux). This inflection indicates that both "Night" and "Light" belong to a subject, this subject being Caelum, which is is used, in the character's name, in its nominative form. Ignoring that it is a personal name, the rearranged phrase caelum noctis lucis means exactly "sky (or heaven) of the night light". Word order in Latin, as opposed to English, matters little; the words' declensions do all the work.
Technically speaking, though, "Night Light Sky" is also a phrase. "Heavenly Night" would be a rather poetic (and not necessarily accurate) translation of noctis lucis caelum. Anyway, for "heavenly night" I'd use Nox Celestis. Faethinverba volant

That makes quite a lot more sense. Thank you Faethin. I really appreciate it :). NtechG 20:04, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

I personally like "Light of the Night Sky" more, but that's probably out of context. —BfD (talk·contribs) Confirm deletion|16:18, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

Looks like they won't be pronouncing it correctly, though, looking at how it's sounded out in Japanese. "Noctis" is ok, but the other two words SHOULD technically be "Look-is" and "Kai-loom" (Kai rhyming with sky, not with spray, for example) The letter C in Latin is never pronounced as an S.

I am not sure why,but when ever I translate Noctis's name on 6 different websites,it says it translates into "Of night, the light of heaven" i spelt his name correct,so i'm not sure why.Can somebody please help?

I know a bit of Latin myself and have a bit of French left under my belt for reference. To work this out:

Noctis (night) belongs to Lucis (light) which in turn belongs to Caelum (sky). So it roughly goes to "night of the Light of the Sky," where "of the" is possessive. This can be arranged into "night of the Sky's Light," "the Light of the Sky's night," and "the Sky's Light's night." Capitalization is here used to denote precedence.

Or, if the "heaven" translation is used, "night of the Light of the Heavens," or "the night of the Heavens' Light" would be fairly accurate, as would "the Light of the Heavens' night."
Really, it's tricky with the phrasing because we in English have very ambiguous grammar rules. You have two objects here: the "light of the sky" and the "night." The night is in the possession of the light of the sky, or, another way to think of it, the light of the sky owns the night.
I really hope this helps. Bluestarultor Best-of Stellar Arena sigicon BSA 03:44, February 14, 2011 (UTC)
Let me put it this way: The word Lucis does not suggest that the word "Light" belongs to something, it implies it. Word order in Latin is actually quite irrelevant; the only thing that truly matters is the inflection case. Granted, the phrase Noctis Lucis Caelum can either mean "Sky of the Night Light" or "Sky of the Light Night". But it can never have "Light" as the vocative noun (ie it can never mean "Light of the Night Sky" or "Light of the Sky Night"). It simply cannot according to Latin rules of declension. I'm locking this thread because I'm tired of random anons that ignore this talk page and the clear note within the code itself that requests not to change the translation. Fëasindë te audio 04:03, February 14, 2011 (UTC)

Æ(I) know latin quite well and the name actually does mean "light of the night sky", it actually makes a lot more sense than "sky of the night light". Even the regular wikipedia says it means "light of the night sky", but Æ didn't put it that way. User:Roxas9494 18:38, July 13, 2012 (CST)

If you want it to be changed it'd be best to leave Faethin a message on his talk page, since I don't think he'll see it here. --Shockstorm (talk) 00:47, July 14, 2012 (UTC)

In terms of the translation, (although I'm not one hundred percent sure on this), it's very possible that "Light of the Night Sky" is the intended translation. Storywise, it could be interpreted as the "light of expiring souls" that Noctis can see, but in Japanese, would his name be said as (not entirely sure how it works with three names) "Lucis Caelum Noctis", which when I last checked translates to "Light of the Night Sky". On another note, when I typed in both "light of the night sky" and "sky of the light night" in English and translated them into Latin on Google Translate, the result was "Noctis Lucis Caelum" both times. Sanokal 222.154.121.154 01:43, June 24, 2013 (UTC)

It is entirely possible that that was the writers' intention. However, since we cannot know this, we must stick with what we know. Regarding the Google translation: you're going to have to trust us on this one: "Light of the Night Sky" is lux caelis noctis. There is no way it could be *noctis lucis caelum. This is not the "probable" meaning. This is the literal translation of Noctis' name according to how Latin works. Fëasindë Peth 02:29, June 24, 2013 (UTC)
Of course. That's why I didn't try to change it without checking the talk page first. It's not like it bothers me too much, I just thought I'd put the statement forward. Sanokal222.154.121.154 06:59, June 25, 2013 (UTC)

The game has finally been released and, with the game's story out there, I think it is logic to assume that the meaning behind Noctis' full name was 'Light of the Night Sky' and not 'Sky of the Night Light'...I don't want to spoil the story, but if you know it...then you should know what I am referring to. @Kai: What you said makes sense. Look at noctis' collar. Similar to Sasuke's. Red eyes? that reminds me of sharingan. And don't forget the hairstyle. He seems like Sasuke's version of FF to me, btw. Since I like Sasuke, it doesn't really matter. XD - SilverSummonerTaLk 17:27, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

You want to compare?

Now, what do you think? they look like twins, I just hope that Noctis will be badass like Sasuke. --TenzaZangetsu 21 May 2009(UTC)

Who the heck is the blonde next to Noctis? Me and my best friend haven't a clue.

I already noticed they looked alike except for the hair. I just want to know who the blonde is, thank you.

Well, blonde one don't look like Naruto but i think Noct resembles a little older Sasuke. --C~Heroine~K 06:25, May 11, 2010 (UTC)

Noct doesn't look like Sasuke to me at all. Rather, Noct looks like a manlier version of Squall. I say manlier version because while both are a bit reserved, Noct is able to resolve his problems while it takes an entire game for Squall to resolve his own. Plus, both have somewhat similar hair and wield mechanized weapons of similar fashion, Squall with his gunblade and Noct with his mechanized falchion. So there. --Parivir 15:58, May 28, 2010 (UTC)

Actually, to me, I see Roxas from Kingdom Hearts next to Noct. Now, Noct looking like Sasuke is a possibility...but I could be rambling :)--FallowstarFrozen Waters Still Make Ripples... 23:20, January 16, 2011 (UTC)

The blonde guy should be Prompto. My friend and I often relate him to Reno from FFVII. Hope this helps. :) --A 20:12, December 20, 2011 (UTC)

Protection[]

Fae, here's a suggestion for you, make the page "Noctis Lucis Caelum/Etym". Then in that page type "sky of the night light", and protect that page. and on the article type in "Noctis Lucis Caelum is a Latin phrase that means "{{/Etym}}". Of course, users could just remove the template and change it back. But IPs give us the most minor information about new updates on games, protecting the page from good-faith IPs doesn't seem right. If the IPs get around this, then just re-protect the page and stuff.  ILHI 21:45, 16 June 2009 (UTC)

Users are going to remove the template and change it back. They've ignored Diablo's note and they will ignore the template. I'd rather be slightly outdated for a day or two than having to constantly revert this section. Thanks for the suggestion anyway. 17:56, 17 June 2009 (UTC)

Storm[]

Before the developers settled on the name Noctis, the protagonist of FF Versus XIII was called Storm. This should be mentioned in the article. Thanks! RogueSquadron 11:36, 21 August 2009 (UTC)

Boots[]

You forgot about Noct's new boots that light up red at the sole. Many fans speculate whether this is just design, gameplay mechanic or weird fashion sense. --Silver Mage Ω 09:46, February 15, 2010 (UTC)

Seems to be design, as the five known party members all have them in one of the promotional posters. Then again, the red soles could just be "activated" in the poster. Sanokal222.154.121.154 07:01, June 25, 2013 (UTC)

Noctis is...[]

A Prince from the caelum dynasty. He is not emo and is quite shy and timid. He defends his kingdom which is based on real life japan from other empires who want to use its crystal.

Nomura also hinted that the game may involve encounters with extra-terrestrials and a covert plot to allow them to colonise the world, using alien-human hybrids as slaves, saying, "The X-Files were a huge influence on me when I was working on plot and story concepts". "Before we had worked out Noct's name we were calling him 'Fox'", he continued, a clear reference to X-Files protagonist Fox Mulder. "Not that I think David Duchovny or Mulder are gay, you know, I didn't take that from the show, I came up with it by myself."

It remains to be seen just to what extent the hit 90s show has impacted on the game, but Nomura's statements seem to indicate that it will be quite significant.

HES NOT !!![]

Yes, that's right folks, some of you are suckers. Well, 'fools' if we're going to be politically correct, but deep down in your gullible hearts you know you're suckers.

There is no Kotaku interview, Nomura has not said Noctis is gay and I have no idea what he thinks of The X-Files (though I love that show). Just because it was still March 31st where you were when I posted that story, doesn't mean it wasn't April 1st anywhere else.

And, seeing as parts of the internet are giving the credit to the wrong person, I must state that IT WAS ALL ME (well not the scan, that was Shuyu). Did you have trouble accessing the link to Kotaku? That's because it doesn't exist. It's a fake link I made up to give an incredibly unbelievable and ridiculous story that I expected to last about a minute before being found out, a hint of credibility. The internet has been had, and I gleefully claim full responsibility (please don't hurt me). That's Whiplash with an 'i'.

I'd like to thank to internet for taking this story and running with it as far as it did, that's why I love you.

I really, really don't want this to become an edit war. So I'm just gonna say it here. That piece of art that someone keeps trying to put into the article looks a hell of a lot like fanart. Compare it to Nomura's most recent stuff, it looks nothing like his current style. So if it is real, as the person who keeps putting it in insists, let's see something that backs up that claim. Voice Actor (Japan)[]

Who do you think could voice Noctis well? I think someone that can pull a strong sounding voice without being too deep like Mamoru Miyano (Riku in Kingdom Hearts) or Noriaki Sugiyama (Sasuke Uchiha...ironically)

Based on what I know so far, probably a quieter meeker voice. Can't cite any examples since I don't really know any Jap.VAs >> -Azul (talkcontribs) 03:49, July 5, 2010 (UTC)

looks a little like Naruto and Sasuke

But I think, the best would be Miyano Mamoru... since his voice were quite versatile... from the crazy Tamaki Suoh to a quiet, loner-type Setsuna F. Seiei and even justice maniac Light Yagami... I think for a Japanese Version, it should

And,hey! I have the same opinion with you too Myellsei, since I think most of the known voice actors in FF series are mainyly used already, and the only one who's not yet is Miyano Mamoru, and so when I watched the video footage just recently, and I think we hit the spot, his sound sure does looks Miyano Mamoru's voice in a calm and composed way!! The following changes need to be made.[]

His hair isn't short it's medium long. His eyes are not red, they are Crimson, and his hair is Turquoise in battle.

His hair is actually blue NOT turquoise. This goes without saying. Lightning has pink and Noctis has blue. Pictures were shown at E3 2006. Also, in the pictures of him it's more blue than turquoise.

I don't get why people say something needs to be changed, then don't bother to do it themselves. This is a wiki, if something's wrong, you click the Edit button and fix it yourself.
Also, both of you need to learns how to sign your posts on talk pages. (~~~~) -- Some Color Mage ~ (Talk) 03:43, May 27, 2011 (UTC)

198.209.0.252 17:23, January 17, 2013 (UTC)

You seriously think cloud can keep up with Noctis' teleporting abilities? I admit cloud has power behind that sword but it does'nt mean anything if it can't hit it's target yo, sorry but cloud IMO would run out of steam before noctis

Noctis' abilities[]

Just a minor one here, but when Noctis is seen using the oversized greatswords used by Gladiolus, he's shown to be far slower while using them, and seems to be having difficulty doing so compared to Gladiolus, who deals with the weight much more conservatively. Is this worth noting on their pages (it seems similar to his lacking experience with firearms, and not being able to aim them like Prompto.) 222.154.121.154 00:10, September 14, 2013 (UTC) Sanokal (yes, the same one as below)

Height?[]

I always thought Noctis had a rather small frame judging by his appearance, I always thought he would be at least 5'7". But now that I look at him compared to Gladious; who is stated to be a rather tall man, I'd go as far to say he looks roughly 6'2". He seems to only be a few inches smaller than him. I'd say he's at least 5'10" or possibly 5'11". Sky Terminal (talk) 07:45, January 17, 2016 (UTC)

Seeing the Light[]

In Final Fantasy XV, Noctis' ability to see the light is barely mentionned. I won't spoil, but it only surfaces in one particular scene and even then, we can't really confirm it has anything to do with seeing the light. It could be a simple vision. Anyway, his ability to foresee people's death has been completely removed so I'll go ahead and remove that from his description. Also, for all we know, his ability to see the light has no connection to his childhood accident as this information comes from Versus XIII and doesn't apply anymore. --FinalFantasyXVAlways (talk) 19:36, December 3, 2016 (UTC)

Quote[]

The personality section begins with a quote all the way back from the Versus XIII days. ("Fools set the rules") No such quote is present in FFXV itself, and it seems fairly out of line with Noctis's personality/speech pattern as in the final product. I suggest removing this and potentially replacing it with a more suitable line. QHRvRICdalurIA (talk) 23:32, November 9, 2017 (UTC)

That's been there forever I think. Could put it to the Versus page.Keltainentoukokuu (talk) 10:14, November 13, 2017 (UTC)

Episode Noctis[]

I'm fine with only Episode Noctis resuming development, as long as it's able to change the game's original ending and also allude to (at least the most important plot points of) Episode Luna, while that and Episode Areana get made into graphic novels for the international market.
