This talk page is used for discussing improvements to the page "Final Fantasy XI". It is not the place for general discussion or sharing stories about the topic of this article.

As the administrator who has the most FFXI involvement here, I did want to outline what I think the FFWIKIA's position should be in the world regarding FFXI. This wiki does not have the need to be as comprehensive as FFXIclopedia. FFXIclopedia exists to help existing players play the game and gather very specific information. It should be our goal here to provide those who have NO experience with FFXI an overview, not so much because they will ever actually play the game, but so that they can see just how this game relates to the rest of the series and so they can gain at least some appreciation for the glory and beauty of the world of Vana'diel. --TacticAngel 07:34, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

Total Revamp (10th Nov 09) Edit

The FFXI article is worded and sectioned off pretty badly. Its divided very oddly, no other FF articles give the controls (which make up most of this one) and in this case they're only relevant for a 1/3 of the systems that play the game. The articles on other FF's have sections on characters, world etc which is what this should have. All thats really of any importance is the Job system section, which is a mess.

Im aware this page cant rival or sum up the entire game, as XI needs its own wiki to fit it all in, but at the moment it doesn't let anyone whos not played the game know what its actually about.

The sections should maybe be like this?: -Summary/Intro to FFXI -World Overview (major Cities and brief overview of continents) -Races -Jobs -How basic gameplay works (Partying etc. Prehaps just a section called activities? split into Levelling, crafting, etc) -Story (Divided into base game and then expansions, few paragraphs on each storyline) -Music -Development

Races and cities have their own article linked at the bottom, but its a bit disorganised and not needed really. The races for example have quite a few bits of useless info in with them.

I did some quick work on the article a while ago which I thought was pretty minor, just re-wording the intro/Jobs and deleting the rubbish. It was undone because it wasn't discussed which is fair. I just did it on a whim so wasn't bothered and assumed if someone cared to undo they'd would probably update the page through the right channels. But that was months ago and its still the same, so surely some work is better then none? (edit I made was Does anyone even care enough to debate this? Or can I just re-work the article?

Every other FF main-page article has tonnes of text about the game. FFXI should be on a par with them at least :) I dont play FFXI anymore, but its a good game and deserves a decent page.

Might I suggest something as well? For anyone contributing screenshots of FFXI to the wiki to kindly refrain from using any which contain custom UI, plugins and other 3rd party applications visible on the screen that are not part of the official FFXI game. Seeing as most readers here may not be familiar with FFXI and existing 3rd party apps, it would not be good for us to represent FFXI using screenshots that feature them. The only expection would probably be unofficial screenshot capturing, since the official screenshot capture hides the UI, which we might intend to show. --Spira 11:49, February 5, 2010 (UTC)

I would have to agree with this. Especially since it's against the EULA of the game to use said 3rd-party apps, and we don't really want to endorse illegal activity. Default UI, no custom models. Chill TA. If Square wanted to remove the fees they could do so because AreaNet does it just as well with Guild Wars as they could do with FFXI. They are both updated frequently and often have in-game events coninciding with real festivals. That said, Square (and every other business on the planet) are out to make money, and as such I don't begrudge their charging monthly as it is how they choose to earn it. If that is how they want to charge fans for their "service" then that's fair enough, I'm just saying that they would undoubtabley sell more if the monthly payments were scrapped.--Goldberry2000 21:28, 17 March 2007 (UTC)
It seems like you guys interpret me as being out for blood every time I comment on something like this. I'm aware of Guildwars, which has some aspects of an MMO, but not fully. It is instance based and only needs to carry a large capacity audience in certain areas, generally safe areas, were no one does combat. It also has no real GM service to speak of... so... I think the expediture is at least somewhat justifiable. It also does have a positive effect, also, of keeping people under 18 out of the game. --TacticAngel 22:50, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

Will this topic have any relavent info? Edit

I'm just browsing over the articles for the main series, and I noticed that this one has almost no relavent information about the game outside of the jobs. Contrary to the discussion header about the article, half of the info posted on the main article is irrelavent control schematics and something about the controls being sloppy especially for a PC. I can only surmise that it is because nothing relavent has been offered about the gameplay and combat mechanics, story bits, interesting facts, and I don't know why there are sperate links to each expansion when other articles are stacked with info about all their remakes and ports.

I could definetly write alot about the game, someone tried to pay me to write guides for it, but I hated the game and didn't take that position, so I don't want to spoil the objectivity of the article with my inglamorous explaination of the games systems and the story bits I experienced. I'd glady answer questions, but I also haven't played the game in 2 years or more, so I'm better as a referance for progressive alteration comparison, not current gameplay.BahamutKaiser 05:42, 23 May 2008 (UTC)

Insight on the FFXI job system Edit

For those here who've never played FFXI, the job system of the game allows and encourages experimentation with job and subjob applications. There are of course the expected role of certain jobs such as Paladin's as a Tank, Dark Knight as a DD or a White Mage as a healer, but this is no restricition or lack of combinations, possibly some yet to be attempted. examples of experimentation would be how Ninja is treated as a tanking job, by preventing damage with the shadows, or a White Mage as a DD, or a confirmed story of a Dark Knight subbing White Mage acting as a main healer in a mission for Chains of Promathia. However, there are certain job combinations that won't work no matter how hard you try, such as subbing a mage job for a non-magic using job (techinically the only true limitation) There are people who play this game that are somewhat stubborn, and says things should be done strictly to the guide, but it's that kind of attitude that should be avoided. You bought the game, you pay for you it, so you shouldn't feel like you have to play to other people's preferences. One should play as they enjoy. Experiment, if something works, go ahead. if it doesn't, maybe you should try something else. Just don't try out these new combos when people are depending on you, and make sure to perform the role you were invited to a party to perform. I myself play as a Samurai/Dancer. this combination would usually be expected for soloing or Campaign batle (battle system introduced with the Wings of the Goddess expansion), but i've managed to make it work in party situations, once as a tank, and was directly asked to back up heal by the main healer in the party. although there are some subjobs for certain jobs that can be considered necessary, such as subbing Warrior for the tanking jobs and DD jobs for their tanking defensive and offensive abilities respectively, but you decide how you play in the end, but as mentioned earlier, avoid job combinations that would be innefective, such as WAR/WHM, or BLM/SAM. job combinations should be effective, and the main and subjobs shouldn't contradict each other. This kind of thinking is flawed. The basic idea is alright (subbing mage for a non mage job, aside from few expectations like DRG and BLU), but FFXI is a party based game. It's not just you paying 12.95, there are also 5 others in your party paying 64.75, so you should always aim to maximize Your benefit to the group. You are gimping yourself as well as your party by subbing something your job is not supposed to sub. Your combination can work in few situations, such as when there are enough DD's but not enough mages, but usually you should be subbing the basic DD jobs by default and change to /dnc when needed. Or get kicked from the party (which is reasonable) and get used to soloing or partying with friends that don't mind the unusual support job. This is why RPing doesn't really work in FFXI, with the exception of LS's made for that purpose. Nobody wants to hear macros for every action you make (Provoke ready in 15secs!<annoyingcall4>) and especially flavoured with RP elements. Sometimes the playerbase expects you to sub an ineffective sub though (ex: any melee /nin at 20, while /drg, /rng or /drk would prove to be more effective) and then you should use your own thinking or just go with the flow. If they feel that the 1 player is gimping their party, they can kick him out and replace him with another person. The job system allows, but does not encourage the experimentation of combinations. Subjobs are a significant factor in your characters abilities, and the jobs in FFXI are extremely specific, so very few job combinations are reasonable even among combinations of the same job type. There are clear advantage toward certain job combinations, any single job usually has 3 to 6 reasonable subs, of which only 1 to 3 are proficient, and there is little compensation or insentive to ensure that more combinations are effective. Soloing is extremely demanding since the foe difficulty is hiked to address a threat based, gang up system of combat, so wile you have complete freedom to try what you want in solo, your heavily restricted by the effectiveness of, if not need to use a specific job. But this is mostly a party oriented game, and choosing combinations for competative acceptance in the searching grouping aspect makes proficient combinations a downright must in most cases. It is so competative that even playing some primary jobs, reguardless of secondary can be unattractive and discriminated against, the idea that there is even remote combination freedom for the majority of jobs is misleading, your lucky to have a single reasonable alternative, maybe even two.
Admittedly, the Mage classes have alot more freedom than the melee classes, as their function is fairly simular reguardless of secondary, and different mage subs offer legitimage yet alternative advantages, making secondary choices relavent. Perhaps i should rephrase my statement: when soloing or campaigning, sure, go nuts. but in a party situation, some lines should be drawn. I myself, play Samurai on FFXI. and i have two of the most obvious subjobs available for SAM: WAR and THF. 95% of the time however, i /DNC (and probably all the time after i finish sky.) i sub it when farming, sub it for parties(i tend to back-up heal in parties too), and sub it for events, missions, and the like. only time i don't /DNC is for sky, when i /THF. I sub it because it's somewhat necessary, and the fact that i steal hate from tanks. it's also nice to mug 1K from sky gods. The main point of my rambling here is that i guess i wasn't too clear with my insight, causing more problems than wanted.

This next statement may get some mixed results: /NIN is not the be all, end all subjob. i know NIN is a useful subjob for some jobs, especially if they can utilize dual wield. for those who don't play FFXI, Ninjas have a ninjitsu called Utsusemi, both in Ichi and Ni levels. (1 and 2 in japanese if i remember correctly) this ability creates shadows, which can nullify most types of damage. however, there are some abilities that remove, or just bypass shadows. It is a good subjob for some jobs, but not all jobs, especially if your ninjitsu skill isn't high enough. that is all i am saying.Barduwulf 23:36, 24 November 2008 (UTC)

Unfortunately yes, they used up one of the series titles in order to launch their completely... "unique" MMO which is worlds away from the others. It goes beyond genre differances, putting FFXI onto an MMO is worse than trying to put a series title on FF Tactics, it's just a totally different game. A mistake they can't correct. Story and other stuff Edit

Hi! I added the main mission storyline to the main article. I may add the expansion storylines in the future. This game has a fantastic storyline worthy of the name Final Fantasy. Unfortunately, as an MMORPG, the gameplay is simply not fun. Leveling up requires too much grinding and getting the best weapons and armors takes too much time. Getting an Excalibur for a Paladin would take more than a year of constant Dynamis.

I wish they would release an offline spinoff (even something like Revenant Wings for FFXII would be great) so people who don't like playing an MMO can experience the world of Final Fantasy XI. If I have to rate the game, I would give the storyline (up until Chains of Promathia) 8.5/10 and gameplay 2/10.

The last two expansions haven't been great though (in terms of storyline). Treasure of Aht Urghan story would get a 5/10 from me and Wings of the Goddess storyline doesn't look good so far as well.Aaronrey 09:15, 15 October 2008 (UTC)

Ok, i'd like to respond to Aarnorey about this. no, i'm not trying to demean, but to shed some light on the issues.

first off, for the issue of grinding: let's face it, most, if not all MMOs involve a grind for getting levels and the like. the only reason it may be more prenounced in FFXI is the need to level subjobs to 37. Also, there also have been recent updates that have made getting EXP easier, by increasing the amount given from monsters able to be soloed by a player, aiding in soloing, and also level sync, being able to join a party at any level everyone being lowered to a party member's level, making it easier to get parties. and before these updates, we had, and still have campaign.

Second, for Best weapons and armor: If you want to get some of the best gear in the game, you've gotta know that you've gotta work for it. i mean, it's not like getting an excalibur in FFXI is like getting Tidus's Caladbolg (which btw is technically the same blade) in FFX. It takes time and effort. Take me for example: i've started doing Sky about 4 months ago. i'm only able to go once a week, and i've been forced to miss some runs (IRL stuff). but i've already got 4 of the things i want from it, and they are very useful items. sure, the other things on my list may take a bit longer to get, due to their popularity, but as long as i save up points, i can get them in due time.

Third: Storyline: true, Aht Urghan may not be as epic as that of Chains of Promathia, but it brought a major change in cutscene animations. there was also the serpent general quest storyline. As for Wings of the Goddess, not enough of it has been released to make a full analysis. Many people are enjoying the campaign system, and the Quest storyline can be fun as well, especially with the rewards, and the cutscenes are enjoyable

Fourth: saying the game is not fun: ok, there are a few things like farming that are not as enjoyable as one would hope, but there are plenty of things to do in FFXI: campaign, besieged, assaults, quests, missions, killing NMs, trust me, this list goes on. The previous version of this page said FFXI was released on PS2 in Europe/Australia on September 17, 2004, but there's no mention of that on Wikipedia. It seems like it's an error as I'm pretty sure it hasn't been released on that console in that region. Moguta 23:42, 22 November 2008 (UTC)

I wouldn't say it's even a fraction as far and away as spirits within, many of the people I play with online have played every final fantasy in the main series plus the ivalice alliance, myself included... and the changes really aren't anything more then the changes between any other final fantasy (sans x and x-2 and the ivalice alliance, for obvious reasons) the only big change is you take a passive roll in the story, but even that is a part of FFI... the monsters change but the vast majority of recurring mobs and mob families are still present. New Releases? Edit

Will this game be released in any new versions? Does anyone know if they will release this game with all the included expansion packs and add-ons including the Abbssea add ons. Johnlanigan 20:12, January 11, 2011 (UTC)

The developers haven't announced anything specific, but the level cap will eventually be increased to 99 and there will undoubtedly be new content aimed at players of that level. Does this mean an add-on with alternate versions of existing zones or a bona fide expansion with uncharted territories? Your guess is as good as anyone's. At some point Abyssea will be bundled with everything else but they're not going to rush into that while people are still content to purchase the modules independently. When Square will choose to release an updated collection is, again, anybody's guess. BlueGoobbue 20:42, January 11, 2011 (UTC)

Milestone timeline Edit

I just noticed something that is crucially missing for FFXI (and FFXIV but moreso XI for temporal reasons).. that being a timeline for the milestones that take place in its history.

as we all know, FFXI is an online MMO and constantly evolves over the months/years. whilst it would be an arduous, and slightly trivial task to document every single change that has happened in its history (of the game's development/etc) there really should be a timeline for the various milestones over the years. this should be based on major technical / developmental / community changes.. and I'm aiming to create the page myself because I am pretty familiar with the whole history of this game.. - but at the same time I'd like to just ask if theres anyone else who agrees/disagrees to such a page being created, or the contents to be included. (XIV will need one as well, especially with the way things are turning out, but i'm not as well versed in it) --Spira 11:52, October 21, 2011 (UTC)

Console differences? Edit

So I am seriously thinking about getting this game for the Xbox 360 & I have to ask if there are any noteworthy differences between the PC & console versions of the game. My main concern is if an additional monthly fee is applied or if the only fee is for XBL Gold. If there are any others it would be appreciated if they were made known.
