GameSpot mirror[]

Did anyone notice that there's a GameSpot mirror of Final Fantasy Wiki? Oddly enough, it's registered under the Wikia domain, and it appears to be a complete mirror of this wiki except for the GameSpot advertisements at the side of the pages. I noticed it as the top referrer to this wiki for the past month (99,988 referred from there to here as of now). Quin 09:12, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

Yeah. It's because the Gaming Wikia has some sort of collaboration with Gamespot to have its gaming wikias featured in Gamespot. IDK the details, though. [^_^]/ 09:15, 22 March 2008 (UTC)
Ah, it's not a mirror, but merely a different URL and skin (editing from there right now). Quin 09:16, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

Refurbish?[]

While reading the forum thread on "personal forums", I've come across a very good suggestion by Drake about our Main Page, and how we can use it to promote good faith editing. Basically, this is something done at the KHWiki and was set up after the "takeover" of the KHWiki. As the Main Page was redesigned again and again, a "Noticeboard" of sorts was set up to ease users who wanted to help with the improvement drive and find the articles that needed cleanup and stuff. Did it work? Maybe... when I went there after a long time, I see the same articles listed on the Noticeboard *sigh*

But all is not lost. Perhaps this effort will work here. But this may mean the "Final Fantasy Series" box has to be moved/removed - but the Category Index may help to replace the box's function. So, I would like opinions. List them down below, sign with four tildes and don't use your talk template. I'll start with my opinion:

  • Remove the Final Fantasy Series Box and replace them with a "Noticeboard" on articles to work on. I know a code to make the list refresh itself with randomly selected articles, so users can seek out which articles they want to work on. The categories can be divided between "Articles Needing Images", "Articles currently being re-structured", "Articles for Improvement", "Articles in need of cleanup", "Articles in need of de-Wikification", "Articles to be expanded", "Articles to be merged" and "Articles with Incomplete Tables". That way, lots of things to be done, and it encourages mainspace editing! Good? Bluer 11:49, 1 November 2008 (UTC)
    • Sounds good to me. Maybe it'll help me start editing in the mainspace again. However, I think we should also have a category called "Articles to rewrite" which just aren't good enough, and need redoing. JudgeZarbi TALK 12:25, 1 November 2008 (UTC)
    • Articles to be merged should be removed. Merging is a task that can be simply done by one person in a not-that-long time. It takes effort to get images, retrieve enemy info, re-write articles and expanding on them. Though as a replacement for the FF series box? You could collapse it, or simply link to it but it has a right to be on the mainpage, IMO. I Lion Heart I 12:33, 1 November 2008 (UTC)
      • Perhaps make the series template collapsable, so it can remain, but not hog up space? Diablocon 21:29, 1 November 2008 (UTC)

I need to shelf this proposal for a while. Technical considerations and stuff like that. When a solution is found we'll commence refurbishing again. Thanks for your opinions and cooperation. Bluer 09:03, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

An idea - we have the "Random Article" link on the left, right? What about a "Random Stub" link on the Main Page? Or, like, "Random Article for Improvement" to the same effect but more broad in the articles it links to? Drake Clawfang

I'm with Drake on this one, this is a good idea. Also with Diablo, so the table can stay in the Main PageCecil
Drake, I'm not even sure that's possible. The only way it may work is if it were to be edited manually, and not working with the articles in the category. If there is a way then someone tell me, but as far as I am aware, it's impossible. And people are more likely to ignore a "random article" than one "suggested article". I mean, we see people who like to improve articles to "Featured" status... if we highlight one page, then those people will be attracted to that one page, and hey, every month we'll have at least one improved article. But then, I'd prefer to just have one thing on the main page rather than different suggested pages in different categories. I just can't see that working so well, even though it's the same but there's more choice. --I Lion Heart I 15:48, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
It is possible, yet from what I hear from Wikia staff, this and the suggestion I had for the refurbishment will eat a lot of server resources. Plus, I had reconsidered this method being installed here {{rasp}}.
I had collapsed the content box one day. Now I'm considering if those "Suggestions Box" be above it or below it. Bluer 16:34, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
Below. So that the collapsed doesn't get shoved to the bottom, but even though it is at the top, it doesn't take a lot of space. I Lion Heart I 16:47, 4 November 2008 (UTC)

The font becomes gigantic![]

I don't know what happened, but when I opened the page, all the fonts were 3 times bigger! what happened? or is it just my computer? SilverSummoner 02:39, 12 November 2008 (UTC)

Hold Ctrl and Scroll. Or Hold Ctrl+"+"/Ctrl+"-" until you get normal sizes... I Lion Heart I 13:25, 12 November 2008 (UTC)

DYK?[]

Did you know about the "Did you know"s that's seen in most wikias? It's time we did something like this. Adding it on to the Main Page. We could make it show five DYK facts at every page load, working like the Random Quote feature. What say you? Shall we have volunteers to head this project? Bluer 15:53, 14 November 2008 (UTC)

The coding should be relatively simple, if we could find a list of facts to use. What types of facts do we mean, basic stuff, just random tidbits, or little known info? Drake Clawfang
Well, anything, I would guess. Pull a few facts from each article that has something of value, convert each fact into a short scentence including a link to the original article, and there's your fact list. --SCM 23:10, 15 November 2008 (UTC)
Ah, I remember proposing something like this ages ago, so I fully back it. I could probably get a good list of beginning facts going.
Speaking of things other Wikias have, I'm surprised we don't have a featured image. We have more than enough images to do that. There's also the "On this day" feature, but that's going a little too far I think. Diablocon 23:13, 15 November 2008 (UTC)
I'm gonna spend an hour or two and make the core coding for the template, we can worry about/add content afterwards. Give me an hour or so, like I said. Drake Clawfang

Done the coding and added a lot of options, didn't take as long as I thought. Drake Clawfang

{{Random Fact}}

Looks good. Tho what I envisioned is a content box with at least three at most five random facts thrown in at every page reload. Bluer 05:58, 16 November 2008 (UTC)
You mean like this? A little tricky, but it works. The template now has three separate lists - one for each random option. So I think a good way to set that up is random game fact, random character fact, and random misc. fact. Gonna do that now. Drake Clawfang
Okay, re-evaluation. Four facts: Game, Character, Spell/Item/Equipment, and Misc. How about that? Drake Clawfang
Works for me :] Bluer 06:38, 16 November 2008 (UTC)
Hey this "Did You Know" box is great! It's a quick way of learner stuff from Final Fantasy. Great idea Drake (or whoever made it). Squallinoa 08 06:40, 16 November 2008 (UTC)
Bluer's idea, I did the coding. Drake Clawfang

Featured Media[]

I how a question. How come you guys don't do a featured media column but other wikis do? Squallinoa 08 06:47, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

That's something propagated by Wikia. Insterested to have the m in? Bluer 06:55, 16 November 2008 (UTC)
Well I have this idea that I caught from Mortal Kombat wiki. In Mortal Kombat wiki, instead of voting for images to appear each month, they basically had a randomizer that randomly picks an image that was uploaded to the wiki. Everytime you vist the wiki or go into the main page, the image change. Squallinoa 08 06:59, 16 November 2008 (UTC)
The randomizer would then need to go through a list of files. Pretty much crowding the Main Page already, in my opinion. Bluer 14:54, 16 November 2008 (UTC)
I guess we can do a regular voting instead? It's up to you Bluer to have a Featured Media section. Or we can use the Happy Birthday one, if you like it. Or none. Squallinoa 08 16:32, 16 November 2008 (UTC)
It might fit in the bottom right corner of the Main Page, seeing as how there's a large space there as of now, especially when the "Series" box is expanded. If we do something like this, it should probably be without voting, otherwise we'll have all the drama of the DNC when some person adores a particular picture and chats it up incessantly.
Perhaps the Featured Media selection could follow the same format as the DNC in years past: one trustworthy and unbiased person picks a monthly or bimonthy image. 8bit 16:39, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

I have another idea, how bout polls? I like the way how Grand Theft Auto wiki did theres. Squallinoa 08 17:02, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

I don't like polls. And hey, most polls will probably relate to characters, which battle in the DNC anyway. We see peoples opinions about things related to FF in other talkpages anyway. And last time I checked, the polls are broken. I Lion Heart I 17:07, 16 November 2008 (UTC)
Crap, well I guess we can do a featured media, that is if Bluer agrees. Squallinoa 08 17:13, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

Happy Birthday Section[]

I had this funny idea, but not sure if you like. We should have a happy birthday column for the FF characters. Basically, this is another way of introducing some of the characters of the FF series. Whenever it's there birthday, the column will be like:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY
Rinoa
March 3

But the problem with it is trying to get through EVERYONE'S BIRTHDAY! We could do only a selected few (maybe from the main series). We could make a separate page listed the birthdays so everyone (including us) well know who's birthday is coming. And no, since we don't know how old they are, we would display their age. So what do you think? Love it, or think it's dumb? Squallinoa 08 07:51, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

Some characters don't have birthdates, which makes this idea, while interesting, lacks coverage for the entire series. Bluer 14:49, 16 November 2008 (UTC)
True. How bout this, underneath it, we'll put facts about the character. Like this:
  • Rinoa is a character from Final Fantasy VIII
  • Rinoa is the only female lead character that isn't a white mage, unlike Yuna, Aerith, Garnet, and Rosa.
  • Rinoa weapon's is a blaster edge that is similar to a boomerang.
Basically it will only have about 3-4 facts about the character and a link to the character's page. Not everyone has a birthday I know, but as I said, we can only pick a few selected characters, mostly noticable characters. Squallinoa 08 16:29, 16 November 2008 (UTC)
That's basically overarching what the "Featured Articles" feature was intended to do. Sorry, but I must say no. Bluer 16:33, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

Ok, thank you. Is there any other ideas that we can use for the main page? Squallinoa 08 16:36, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

Layout[]

Might I suggest a change to the layout? Currently, the template showing all the "Articles in need of help" categories extends down a bit. Here's my idea - make the category box one column instead of two, move the forum links to the left of that, and put the "Mission time" box above them and two wide. Can we see how that would look? Drake Clawfang

Your suggestion would make the Category Box extend much further down by three/four lines than it is currently in both IE and FF. I think further changes are unnecessary. Bluer 14:55, 18 November 2008 (UTC)
Too all - I cooked up an alternate design in my sandbox. I think it looks better, as the left side is no longer so cramped and that Mission Time box isn't sticking down so far. Everyone feel free to look and give me your opinions: User:Drake Clawfang/Sandbox. Drake Clawfang 21:22, 4 December 2008 (UTC)

Birthday[]

Gogo (Final Fantasy VI) small
Aramis "Adios cowboy":
TALK - Is killing a man really murder?
I was reading the suggestions above, and I liked an idea: How about a birthday window. For example, user A and B birthdays are in June 13th. Then on june 13, we can put in a birthday window:

Today's bithdays:

  • User A, age X
  • User B, age X

Of curse we could link to the user's talk page, or something like that.

Me Walk
Me Walk

I'd support that idea. ie: "Today, the following Users celebrate their birthday:

User:ABC turns 18
User:XYZ turns 12"

Also, on an unrelated note, when were these comments left. I'll feel like an idiot if these posts are old and forgotten. That's what the {{{time}}} thing is all about isn't it. AJ Werefang 04:06, 27 March 2009 (UTC)

Rikku White Mage
What possible use would this be (the birthday thing, not the time stamp thing)? It is not related to FF at all and thus has no place on our front page. Also, our user base is so small that for most days of the year it will go unused. Also, the original suggestion wasw for the birthdays of FF characters, not user. First it was Blaze. Than I asked Diablo to delete VFDd articles. Then it reduced by something life 50. Than 8bit went on a spree creating "placeholders" for information. Kaze: The Glory of Life was one of these. By the end of the spree, I realised we had 10007 articles, but more than eight mainspace articles were VFDd, something life 14. Fae and 8bit got through them all and Griffen created the 10000th article, Library (Crystal Chronicles) without realising.  ILHI 21:41, 8 April 2009 (UTC)
