Whether tragic events touch your family personally or are brought into your home via newspapers and television, you can help children cope with the anxiety that violence, death, and disasters can cause.

Listening and talking to children about their concerns can reassure them that they will be safe. Start by encouraging them to discuss how they have been affected by what is happening around them. Even young children may have specific questions about tragedies. Children react to stress at their own developmental level.

The Caring for Every Child's Mental Health Campaign offers these pointers for parents and other caregivers:

  • Encourage children to ask questions. Listen to what they say. Provide comfort and assurance that address their specific fears. It's okay to admit you can't answer all of their questions.
  • Talk on their level. Communicate with your children in a way they can understand. Don't get too technical or complicated.
  • Find out what frightens them. Encourage your children to talk about fears they may have. They may worry that someone will harm them at school or that someone will try to hurt you.
  • Focus on the positive. Reinforce the fact that most people are kind and caring. Remind your child of the heroic actions taken by ordinary people to help victims of tragedy.
  • Pay attention. Your children's play and drawings may give you a glimpse into their questions or concerns. Ask them to tell you what is going on in the game or the picture. It's an opportunity to clarify any misconceptions, answer questions, and give reassurance.
  • Develop a plan. Establish a family emergency plan for the future, such as a meeting place where everyone should gather if something unexpected happens in your family or neighborhood. It can help you and your children feel safer.

If you are concerned about your child's reaction to stress or trauma, call your physician or a community mental health center.

Won't somebody PLEASE think of the children? :'( --Auron Kaizer 18:58, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
What the heck does this have to do with FF? O_o --Lycentia 19:12, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
I can totally relate. Ever since meteorfall, raising my child here in Edge has been impossible. The fact that my son Jimmy then contracted Geostigma didn't help at all, all he did was sulk and talk about some kind of reckoning from some chick called Kadaj. And even when he was cured, those Deepground guys who came and tried to kidnap him didn't help. Honestly, I'd be better off raising my kid in Ivalice. --Diablocon 20:00, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
You raised your child in Edge? How the hell did you manage to get eaten by a Ninja? --Crazyswordsman 20:38, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
You're all a bunch of goofballs. You know that right? ^_^ --Lycentia 22:36, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
"You raised your child in Edge? How the hell did you manage to get eaten by a Ninja?" - It was tough, but he managed to do it, he has a surpisingly big mouth under that scarf. Originally though, we lived in Rydia, but she tended to complain. (Seriously, I'm currently playing Durge of Cerberus, and it's odd hearing people currently refer to a place called Edge without realising how stupid it sounds. Well, I say "playing", but that should really be "forcing myself to play", I can only play it in short bursts, with some FF XII in between to dull the pain) --Diablocon 23:13, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

Something's wrong with this page

Works fine for me. By chance, have you gotten a new browser (or updated it) recently? --Hecko X 03:27, 19 January 2007 (UTC)
No. --Crazyswordsman 03:51, 19 January 2007 (UTC)
I got kicked in the head by the same filter. The words about tragic events touching your family is interfering with the filter.--Goldberry2000 12:11, 19 January 2007 (UTC)
I have no idea why "tragic events" stuff would do that. I guess we shouldn't write about such things. --Crazyswordsman 16:00, 19 January 2007 (UTC)

There Needs To be More!

In my opinion ff7 and ff8 are the best. So i wanna see a follow up movie to ff8 and maybe a brawler where yoour Zell or a shooter as laguna or Irvine. -DiablosInferno

What a stupid idea. And you guys are stupid for thinking crap like that up. Square Enix is only best for innovative games like their Final Fantaasy franchise and other RPGs they make. -- Zeta Stryker 0:31, 4 July 2007 (UTC)

Man Final Fantasy 8 sucked. Why the fuck would anyone want to make a sequal to it? Its too damn complicated and the characters annoy me, all copies should be buried somewhere to remove its stain on humanity. (BlueHighwind 23:42, 5 September 2007 (UTC))

In all honesty, it was different from the normal way of equipment yes, but because of the Juctioning system you were able to increase the stats that you felt were more important. For instance, if you wanted more HP from levelling up then you would junction your strongest magic to the VIT stat etc etc. Although yes, the triple triad game was annoying in the sense that to get any good cards were to travel the whole world playing against everyone, the game it self was good on its own merit. I get it that some people will say that it was one of the worst games in the FF series but if you look at it from a stand alone perspective, it is well worth the time to play it. Battle system

Squall92 21:35, 27 October 2007 (UTC) I don't know about you guys, but I love the battle system in 8. It was unique, and it allowed alot of veraity in the encounters, and also let you focuson different areas of attack. I never had a complaint and thought it was better than basically coping and pasting the same battle system that alot of Final Fantasies share. Your thoughts?

Should this be mentioned?

Ultimecia, easiest final boss, but long process?

it was a long process, but i beat Ultimecia before she drew acloypsis. i just arua squall and holy war. lvl 100 with lion heart

arua squall, cast arua on squall.

Ffx-bahamut

Long process? You say your lvl 100 and yet you had problems with her? I was only lvl 79 the first time I beat her and I didnt even know what Aura was till my second playthrough. Apocalypse was a good piece of magic, just a shame you could never have it at any other point in the game though since I am sure it would have been great on the Juctioning system. Name change question...?

When I first played FFVIII, I noticed that when each character was introduced, there was a "cycling" of text boxes right before their name was first mentioned, as if there used to be a pause for the player to change the character's name. Is this so? If so, why was it removed from the final game? I mean, there wasn't any voice acting, you could already change GF names, and it's not like it could've used up THAT much more memory, could it?

Tenth Anniversary

Does anyone know if Square Enix had anything officially recognizing or celebrating the 10th anniversary of the game? If so, it seems like that is something that should go on the page. 71.107.197.4 22:10, September 10, 2009 (UTC)

Square did squack but I'm not totally sure, I'll try to search for info and just remember that FFVIII is celebrating ten years. They should make a sequel or a remake.

Edit Request

  • Can someone please go back and fix the facts about Squall, Raine, and Laguna? In describing them and their story no mention of Squall being their child should be mentioned, and on the bottom a section saying "Rumors" should have the information of Squall having the possibility of being Raine's and Laguna's child. Not the other way around!
  • Also Seifer is missing a Creation and development if someone could find that information and post it, it would be greatly appreciated.

Quick Question

Can i play FFVIII on my PS3 (not the PSN version but the original) which is the latest model. And if so what will happen when I have to switch discs out to continue the game? Judge Balthier 17:21, January 19, 2010 (UTC)

The PS3 isn't backwards compatible (except on the very old models). I think that you can download something from somewhere to run PS1 ans PS2 games, but I'm not sure where. Moocowisi 17:28, January 19, 2010 (UTC)

Actually, I've just recently found out that even the latest PS3 model was able to play Playstion games, it's in the manual that it states that it can play some Playstation games but not the PS2 games. Judge Balthier 17:49, January 19, 2010 (UTC)

Really? I'm gonna have to read the manual now. Moocowisi 17:59, January 19, 2010 (UTC)
Yes, the PS3 is always going to be capable of playing PS1 games for the same reason the PS2 can: they're all based on the PS1's core. Short of coming up with an entirely new system, or making drastic changes to the base, the PlayStation line will probably always be able to play PS1 games, as odd as that sounds. Squall's Dead

Found this while browsing my video favorites (on The Spoony Experiment, a guy who is famous for, among other things, having an FFVIII-bashing series of videos). The Squall's Dead site is a bit TL;DR, so to sum it up: everything after Disc 1 is a "dream", made by Squall's mind before/while he dies. It's definitely an interesting interpretation of FFVIII's events, but do you think it's worthy as a mention on this or a subpage? WarxePBIconJoey Joe Joe Junior Shabadoo 21:05, February 18, 2010 (UTC)

if the squall's dead theory is ever included i think it should be noted that silent hill 1 being a hallucination harry had in the moments before he died when he crashed was a possible ending (188.141.107.240 18:31, July 13, 2010 (UTC))

Edea's Parade

Winterwolf ff1 psp

That's why putting Ultimecia (as Edea) or Edea (possessed by Ultimecia) solves this problem. However, let's not forget that Edea herself stated that the sorceress that appeared in Galbadia was in fact Ultimecia inside her shell. The Trivia section is at the end of the article, so this fact is already revealed to those reading the article.--Twili123 01:37, April 1, 2010 (UTC)

If you don't like the way it's mentioned Edea/Ultimecia is another possibility. I would think after over a decade since its release that villain Edea actually being Ultimecia would be fairly common knowledge. Nonetheless, that part of the trivia is not so important. --Twili123 01:52, April 1, 2010 (UTC)

First of all "cup cake," don't curse at me. Second, my point is that mentioning Ultimecia in regard to the parade is not really a spoiler. There are articles all over this wiki that mention such facts. In the end, it does not really matter what is mentioned. I'm just trying to make everything as clear as possible for those seeking information about the game. --Twili123 02:05, April 1, 2010 (UTC)

It was not so much an assumption, but rather It was my own opinion that it should be common knowledge by now, though there is no real way to fully deduct that. I understand your point, however, I don't think mentioning Ultimecia in regard to Edea's parade is a spoiler. Spoilers are really just for the story line. Otherwise, every section would need to have a spoiler alert. I appreciate that you think very deeply about edits, but I don't think this is important as far as spoilers go. --Twili123 02:24, April 1, 2010 (UTC)

Picture of Squall and Laguna

Under the Development Section, I think the picture with Squall and Laguna is kind of a spoiler. It's not the actual picture, but the description underneath. Saying that Laguna is Squall's dad is a big spoiler. Maybe the description should be taken away, or moved into the story section with the spoiler alerts. Acboyz2 20:49, March 28, 2010 (UTC)Acboyz2

Neutrality and character summaries

Squall Leonhart 2

Go ahead. I don't have much love for VIII myself, but I don't have much love for biased articles either. I can't really see anything wrong with the Themes section though. C A T U S E 03:19, September 18, 2012 (UTC)
Squall Leonhart 2
PFF PuPu

On hindsight that was a bit pointlessly rigid reaction. I didn't see there was talk on the talk page about it before adding some things you'd removed back. It wasn't entirely clear to me why they were unsuitable but I see the neutrality argument now. I agree it should be neutral. That's why themes sections are difficult. Also I could not have written it very well the first place if it sounded like criticism, whereas it was intended as an observation only.

If something is wrong with it the way it is now, I think the whole paragraph should be removed rather than re-worded. That was the original source of my confusion. Like if it can't be said that main character focus is a theme in FFVIII, then remove all that rather than rewording it to say that everyone is in focus, because that is not a theme. Main character focus could be a theme, not having a main character focus is not a theme, so take it all off if it doesn't apply. Otherwise it's just talking about the game but not really relating to the header. If FFVIII can't be said to have a "light and bright atmosphere" as a theme, then take it all off completely, rather than saying that some things are light and some things are not, because that's not a theme. Replace them with something entirely different, or just have a short themes section.Keltainentoukokuu (talk) 13:18, September 18, 2012 (UTC)

I'll look into rewording the whole thing if you think that should be done. Its not that VIII doesn't focus much more on its protagonist than most other FF games, it's just that the other characters do get character development and it would be wrong to hint otherwise. Anyways, VIII is brighter than its predecessor, but I think this is more of an aesthetic difference than a thematic one, because there are some pretty grim underlying themes in VIII that often go unnoticed. I mean, there's a moment in VII when Tifa is caught inside the manor of a pervert/rapist and everyone plays it for laughs, even putting Cloud in drag to rescue her (and said rapist later kidnaps underage Yuffie). Every game has its somber and cheery moments. You might find creepy that Squall took off with a comatose Rinoa, but bear in mind that the dude walked half the ocean with that girl on his back on the off-chance that he could maybe save her. Anyways, yup, I'll look into rewriting it if you'd like. --Winged Lion (talk) 06:40, September 27, 2012 (UTC)

The image labeled as the US PC release is wrong. The US box had a slightly different crop of the PSX artwork, with a shiny "prismatic" foil background. Final Fantasy VIII 15th Anniversary

It just occurred to me, but for those living in NA, VIII was released on this day...wow, "Time. It will never wait" or something that Ultimecia said. Thank you Square for the memories, and for creating my favourite game in the series! Vapor Rub (talk) 15:04, September 9, 2014 (UTC)

Evidence of a firm legacy??

This just happens to be one of those games I've seen over the years that is both deeply loved and deeply loathed, but I can't seem to find a good source that has it cementing its own legacy. At least the characters are recognizable to fans. But where does the recent collab with Mobius fall in? And was SE pressured for the remake? Swordzmanp236 (talk) 02:32, August 22, 2019 (UTC)

Every game in the series is polarizing to an extent. If no good source can be provided (e.g. from a major publication or etc.) to back up the statement that this game is uniquely polarizing, such a section should not be added to the page, though it probably needs more than just one source.--Magicite-ffvi-ios Technobliterator (TC) 10:25, August 22, 2019 (UTC)
Welp, let's see what folks can make of this piece that came out around ‘13. From Gamespot: https://www.gamespot.com/articles/rainbow-after-the-squall-the-legacy-of-final-fantasy-viii/1100-6416726/ What I’d really love to find out is why so many anecdotes about FFVII have such wild swings of opinion. You have the kids who grew up with it and fell in love with graphics or the story or the characters vs. the hardliners who pound on the setting or the gameplay or something else that just isn’t quite right. I myself am of the opinion that this game is good, but it could be that folks weren’t fully ready for what it had to offer at the time. Apart from the Steam release, we really did not hear much about VIII as a game in the States until this year. But why was that? Why now does SE decide to polish it and trot it out from near-obscurity? I would say that I've seen more varied opinion on VIII than, say, VII or IX; and that X being a turning point in the series gives rise to much the same diversity of opinion as in VIII: the former had a lot of things they hadn’t tried before, and not all of them worked well at the time. If we cannot answer what impact VIII had, then it’s just as well that it was forgotten for most of its existence. Swordzmanp236 (talk) 01:49, August 23, 2019 (UTC)
None of these statements are really objective, and we can't particularly have speculation and stuff of dubious objectivity on an article as big as a main series game. Hexed 02:26, August 23, 2019 (UTC)

I am not trying to be rude at all on this, but what are you trying to go on about? How does what was written in the previously deleted section do to help improve the page? A lot what you're stating is extremely subjective and speculating "tinfoil hat" talk, which doesn't belong on main space pages that thousands read.

I don't think you're understanding what obscure really is, as Final Fantasy VIII is one of the more popular titles in the franchise. In addition, what you wrote in the legacy was very opinionated and lacked any real new information to the article as a whole.

The statements about the title being polarizing are extremely subjective, as most titles in the series are/were polarizing at some point. Aside from Noah Antwiler's review of FF8 that was extremely scathing a decade ago, there's not much extreme hatred or lack of remembrance for the title. What you're writing is honestly just similar to the "well this FF is underrated and forgotten" statements seen on message boards. Also I'd like to mention Mobius does many crossover events with other mainline FF's; well all the other FF games have collab events in multiple mobile titles for anniversaries. I don't think this stuff is needed imo. --Miphares (talk) 02:43, August 23, 2019 (UTC)

Look, I'm not trying to protest the deletion of the section. I'm asking for help in answering one key question in multiple parts. What, if any, legacy did the eighth game leave behind? Why was this game seen as overrated/underrated/black sheep/whatever when it sold well overall near the time of its release? Why do players of the original era look upon it with fond memories while others draw a lukewarm response or caustic rebuke? Most importantly, why the relative quiet for better than a decade when every other pre-seventh-gen title has seen two, three, four releases and more? What is it about this game that sets it apart, that it should only come into the forefront now that the technology has evolved to possibly improve it? If indeed it is underrated, how is it that the characters have stuck around in pop culture, fandom and series lore? Could we answer these with facts? Swordzmanp236 (talk)+
FFVIII was updated for PC in 2013 in the same way that FFVII was in 2012. People were saying how FFIX was the one getting the shaft, but then they remade IX for PC. Of course, they didn't port VIII everywhere like they did for VII, but it could be simply they knew the 2013 port was bad and knew they would have to IX-ify it to justify it (and VIII is definitely no VII).
I don't get the black sheep narrative in relation to Square Enix's handling of it. Sure it's amusing they announced the Switch releases and VIII was omitted, but it was the only one that hadn't been in a recently-ported state. JBed (talk) 10:43, August 23, 2019 (UTC)
The black sheep hypothesis stems from the opinion that the game was somehow bad/flawed enough that it would have been forgotten over time (and to some extent, that dubious honor belongs to FFII and not VIII]. Sure, it’s incredibly linear as the series goes. Yes, in hindsight the battle system places too much emphasis on raw power. Not enough fantasy and too much reality? Story hard to grasp? Maybe. But somehow the characters resonate with players/fans. Surely it must have done something to inspire other games of its era. Certainly it motivated the continuation of the series. But how?
Bad ports aside, VIII is absent of any professional retrospective in the two decades since release, leaving only questions and speculation to fill the void created. So all we have, it seems, are these battles that play out between defenders and critics. Will the remaster address enough to help cement the game's place in history? That's hard to say. Swordzmanp236 (talk) 21:00, August 23, 2019 (UTC)

Updating Character Images with the new models?

With the Remaster released, should we start replacing the original in-game character images with the updated models? For example, NPC characters like Cid, Queen of Cards and the rest of the playable cast on the main FFVIII page and other related pages. Vapor Rub (talk) 14:09, September 13, 2019 (UTC)
