Gilgamesh: Enough expository banter!
This talk page is used for discussing improvements to the page "Earth (element)". It is not the place for general discussion or sharing stories about the topic of this article.

The article in its current state says that the element first appears in Final Fantasy V. I do disagree with this for several reasons.

  • In the original Final Fantasy, there existed the spell known as Quake. OK, it was an Instant Death spell so you may not class this as elemental, however it has no effect against flying enemies, a trademark of the Earth element.
  • In Final Fantasy II, there was the Gaia Drum which "summons an Earthquake" and inflicts damage. I'm almost certain this was Earth-elemental, because it didn't bother flying enemies.

So maybe the original Final Fantasy is a bit of a grey area, but I'm pretty sure that FFII had the Earth element. Before I change anything, I just want to see if you guys say "Jeppo, you're talking a load of crap, shut up." and then I won't do it. Jeppo 01:36, 11 April 2009 (UTC)

See, Earth is weird because, as you noted, Quake was a killing spell. I think the main hallmark of the Earth element is to not have an effect on flying enemies, because there are so few enemies that are actually weak to Earth. So, I agree that Earth appeared in the original Final Fantasy. Anyone else want to chime in? 8bit 01:39, 11 April 2009 (UTC)
In some of the earlier games, Earth isn't considered an Element is it? It's something that players resist. And when I see a link to an element among links to statuses... does not liek. What's resisted is ground attacks. For games where Earth is treated more like a status like Death is (either hit or miss), should we create an article called "Ground Attack" and link to that instead? 88.108.143.24 14:50, July 24, 2010 (UTC)
You see, this page keeps saying "Earth-elemental damage" when Earth isn't an element. Earth is non-elemental that misses enemies that keep out of the way. 88.108.143.24 14:54, July 24, 2010 (UTC)
Yeah like Yuffie's earth limit break that misses flying opponents, but limit breaks have no element. It's a bit like Barret's Hammer Blow, hit or miss. So maybe ground attack article isn't a bad idea. Same as Quake in FF13?Keltainentoukokuu 22:05, July 24, 2010 (UTC)Keltainentoukokuu
