Syldra 3

Syldra concept art by Yoshitaka Amano.

Syldra (シルドラ, Shirudora?), also known as Hydra, is a character and summon from Final Fantasy V. She is Faris Scherwiz's childhood friend. Her signature attack is a wind-elemental Thunderstorm, which she shares with some lightning-elemental summoned monsters.

Appearances

Final Fantasy V

Template:Sideicon Syldra is Faris's pet sea dragon. In the Anthology release, it is called Hydra and is referred to as male, but in all other versions she is female.

Story

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow. (Skip section)
Syldra's Death

Syldra saves Faris and her friends from the sinking Walse Tower.

Field sprite. When a young Faris fell overboard, Syldra saved her and became friends with the beast. When she became captain of the pirates who rescued her, she used Syldra to help them out. Syldra pulls the pirate ship through the water, which makes it one of the two known ships on Planet R that doesn't need wind to move. She helps the party cross the seas of Tycoon to reach the Wind Shrine. While crossing the Torna Canal the ship is attacked by Karlabos, which is defeated by the party and drags Syldra inside a whirlpool, separating her from the party and leaving the ship crash.

Syldra's Soul Pirates' Hideout

Faris meets Syldra's spirit in the Pirates' Hideout.

Later, Syldra sacrifices herself to save the party from the sinking Walse Tower, and Faris breaks down. Upon visiting the Pirates' Hideout in the Merged World Faris sees Syldra's spirit in the cove. Bartz and Lenna do not see anything, but Krile, who can understand Syldra, tells Faris that even in death, Syldra wants to help. These words comfort Faris, and the party is given Syldra to summon.

Spoilers end here.

Gameplay

Syldra is a level 4 summon and deals an attack called Thunderstorm for 32 MP, which does Wind-elemental damage to all enemies. When boosted with the Air Knife or Magus Rod, Syldra can deal almost as much damage as Bahamut, for half the MP cost.

In the mobile and Steam versions, the player earns the "Say Hello, Syldra!" achievement after obtaining the pirate ship.
