Story
Years before the start of the game, when a young Faris fell overboard, Syldra saved her. Faris became friends with the beast and when she became captain of the pirates who rescued her, she used Syldra to help them out. Thanks to Syldra, she could sail when the wind died. The ship is attacked by Karlabos, and Syldra is separated from the party.
Later, Syldra saves the party from the sinking Walse Tower but in doing so, Syldra dies, and Faris breaks down.
Upon visiting the Pirates' Hideout in the Merged World Faris sees Syldra's spirit in the cove. Bartz and Lenna do not see anything, but Krile, who can not only see but understand Syldra, tells Faris that even in death, Syldra wants to help. These words comfort Faris, and the party is given Syldra to summon.
Gameplay
Syldra is a level 4 summon and deals an attack called Thunderstorm for 32 MP, which does Wind-elemental damage to all enemies. When boosted with the Air Knife or Magus Rod, Syldra can deal almost as much damage as Bahamut, for half the MP cost.
In the Anthology release, Hydra is referred to as male, but in all other versions she is female.
In the iOS version, the player earns the "Say Hello, Syldra!" achievement after obtaining the pirate ship.

Etymology
Hydra was one of the spawn of Echidna, a many-headed serpentine monstrosity in Ancient Greek mythology. It could breathe poison, and indeed its very blood was deadly. The Hydra was killed as one of Heracles's Twelve Labors.
TheTrivia
- The Shildra Inn in Cosmo Canyon from Final Fantasy VII is named after this creature.
