Suzaku is one of the Four Lords from Final Fantasy XIV.

History[]

Prior to Stormblood[]

Suzaku was born with crimson plumage like blazing fire. She was likened to the Firebird of legend, a being said to give immortality, and due to this was pursued endlessly. She met Tenzen who treated her differently and became everything to her. She traveled with Tenzen and the other lords, helping anyone in need, and one day their deeds reached the ears of a king. By the king's order they battled the mad auspice Koryu, and were defeated. Tenzen unleashed a powerful technique, but left himself open to attack. Suzaku watched Tenzen die, feeling hopeless, wishing she were the Firebird of legend. She kept these feelings of grief to herself for years after becoming an auspice.

Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood[]

The bonds on the imprisoned Koryu are starting to fade and the Four lords are needed again. Suzaku is summoned to the Reisen Temple to quell her aramitama. Genbu likens the Warrior of Light to Tenzen, but Suzaku flies into a rage, saying they don't even compare and berates them. Byakko and Genbu calm her down enough to convince her to fight, and she meets the Warrior of Light in Hell's Kier, her chosen battleground. As she fights the Warrior of Light Suzaku unleashes her aramitama and becomes consumed by her grief, confusing the Warrior for Tenzen and showing her human form to battle.

Calmed in the aftermath, Suzaku reflects on her travels with Tenzen and the Four Lords. After her story, she realizes she will protect those for whom Tenzen died in his memory, and thanks the Warrior of Light.

Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker[]

Suzaku and the other lords would answer Alphinaud Leveilleur's call for assistance in completing Sharlayan's starship Ragnarok by sending sacred and Allagan relics—among them Tenzen's Phoenix Blade—with Soroban and Hancock Fitzgerald travelling aboard the Prima Vista to personally deliver them to the Warrior.

Etymology[]

The Vermilion Bird is one of the Four Symbols of the Chinese constellations. According to Wu Xing, the Taoist five-elemental system, it represents the fire-element, the direction south, and the season summer, correspondingly. Thus it is sometimes called the Vermilion Bird of the South.

It is known as Zhuque (Joo-choo-eh) in Chinese, Suzaku in Japanese, Jujak in Korean, and Chu Tước in Vietnamese. It is described as a red bird that resembles a pheasant (also dubbed as either a sparrow or a peafowl) with a five-colored plumage and is perpetually covered in flames, though it is not to be confused for a phoenix.
