Refine Support Magic from an item

Description

Supt Mag-RF (support magic refiner) is a menu ability in Final Fantasy VIII that allows the player to make support related magic spells from certain items; magic that confers buffs or heals. Making spells from items is generally much more convenient than drawing from enemies, and can net higher tier spells earlier than enemies would offer them, such as Aura for Supt Mag-RF.

Obtained[]

The Guardian Force Leviathan learns Supt Mag-RF for 30 AP. Leviathan is drawn from the boss in Balamb Garden's B2 floor, or Trauma in the final dungeon. If the player removes Supt Mag-RF with Amnesia Greens, there is no way to get back.

Mechanics[]

Using Supt Mag-RF in the Ability menu enables the player to make spells from items currently in their possession and allocate the resultant spells to a party member who has space in their Magic inventory. Each party member has 32 slots for Magic, and can hold 100 spells of each type.

Use[]

Supt Mag-RF is a great refiner ability to make various useful spells with, such as Drain, Dispel, and Aura. Drains are good for ST-Atk-J to heal the attacker with every physical attack, even with Darkside, and are easily made from Vampire Fangs, obtained from Red Bats inside Fire Cavern and from their cards with Card Mod. Wizard Stones becoming 20 Dispels each is a good use of these stones, as they can become various spells with different refiner abilities.

Aura is an excellent spell, but very rare. There are select few Aura draw points in the game and none of them reusable, and there is only one enemy that has it in their draw list, and that battle is most often on a hidden timer. Fury Fragments become Aura with Supt Mag-RF, obtained from Blue Dragons and their cards.

Esuna is a good healer spell to have on hand, made easily from M-Stone Pieces dropped by various low level enemies, and from Dragon Fangs, though the latter are best saved for weapon remodeling.

Dragon Skins from Anacondaurs can be made into Reflects. For Protect and Shell spells, the player can get Turtle Shells from Adamantoises and Rune Armlets from Blobras.
