Summoning materia is a set of materia in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth that allows summoned monsters to be called in battle and fight alongside the party, similar to in Final Fantasy VII Remake.
Summons are fearsome creatures that are the embodiment of ancient knowledge, condensed into materia.
Mechanics[]
Summoning materia function similarly to in Remake, but may now be used during battles in the overworld rather than during specific boss battles (though the summon meter still needs to appear before a summon can be called upon). A summon's size is less of a factor during overworld battles due to the prevalence of wide open space, though there are still locations where only medium- or small-sized summons may be called upon.
The Chocobo and Moogle, Shiva, and Ifrit materia are automatically equipped to Cloud, Aerith, and Red XIII, respectively, from the beginning of Chapter 2, "A New Journey Begins". The materia for Magic Pot, Moogle Trio, and Posh Chocobo are available to those who met their special purchase conditions (linked to specific game editions, pre-order, and region). Leviathan is acquired if the player has save data for Final Fantasy VII Remake, whereas Ramuh is acquired if the player has save data for "Episode INTERmission" from Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade.
Most of the game's unlockable summons are linked to specific regions, becoming available to battle in Chadley's Combat Simulator once the party enters their respective region. Summoning materia may now grow from level 1 to 4 as players gather intel on a particular summon within their region, increasing a summon's power and range of abilities. Gathering intel also unlocks lower-difficulty versions of the battles against the summon in the Combat Simulator, making them easier to acquire. Only summoning materia with discoverable World Intel may have their levels increased. Other summoning materia have only one level.

Etymology[]
Materia means "matter" or "substance" in Latin, Spanish, and Italian; it also means "subject" in Italian and Spanish, and is the root of Portuguese "Matéria".
