The roots of arcanima can be traced back to the esoteric calculations practiced by the people of the south sea isles. It was their efforts to express the nature of aether in mathematical terms that gave rise to the exacting science that we practice today. These definitive formulas are represented by "arcane geometries"—patterns that allow arcanists to manipulate aetheric energy and produce specific effects. The ability to shape this energy also allow practitioners to manifest arcane entities known collectively as "Carbuncle." This is perhaps the most defining power attributed to the art of arcanima.

The Summoner is a job in Final Fantasy XIV, introduced along with the Discipline of Magic Arcanist in A Realm Reborn. Players start as a Arcanist, and may upgrade to Summoner using the Soul Crystal obtained from the quest "Austerities of Flame" after Arcanist reaches level 30.
The player may also upgrade to the Scholar job using the Soul Crystal obtained from the quest "Forgotten but Not Gone" after Arcanist reaches level 30. Both jobs are allowed to be unlocked on the same character and share experience points. As such, leveling one job will also level the other.
Profile[]
Arcanist[]
Accompanied by a familiar in battle, adepts of the art of arcanum derive their might from symbols of power born of geometric techniques hailing from across the southern seas. Held within special grimoires, these symbols lend shape to the arcanist's aether, thereby allowing them to produce a myriad of powerful spells.
Using magicked gemstones upon which the selfsame symbols are graven, arcanists are also able to summon forth the ephemeral being Carbuncle to carry out their bidding.Lodestone
Arcanists wield grimoires in battle. Initially limited to Ruin for direct damage, they also utilize spells that are capable of healing and reviving allies. However, their support abilities are quickly outshined by their arsenal of offensive magic.
Their defining trait is their ability to summon pets into battle. Carbuncle, obtainable at level 2, specializes in providing a substantial shield for its owner and facilitates further summoning spells. Though the Arcanist's role is that of DPS, at low levels it can be very versatile, effectively switching from a DPS to a healer when the situation demands. As it levels up, however, its stat growth, abilities and spells will focus more and more on pure DPS.
Summoner[]
The beast tribes of Eorzea worship and summon forth beings known as primals, among which are Ifrit, Garuda, and Titan. Yet what is a god to one man is a demon to another, for the city-states of Eorzea see these beings as a grave threat to their collective survival.
In times immemorial, there lived mages who had not only the power to summon the primals, but also the means to transmute the primals' essences, thus binding them to their will. Known simply as summoners, the existence of these men and women and their arcane art have been all but lost to the ages.Lodestone
Summoners can summon the "essence" of the Eorzean primals, giving them access to more powerful abilities and summons as compared to Arcanists. The Summoner's gameplay involves a cycle of empowering Trances that generate Arcanum, and then spending that Arcanum on summoning spells, which deal massive elemental damage. As their level grows, these summons progress from elementally-aspected carbuncles, to primal egis, all the way to primal simulacra dubbed Ruby Ifrit, Topaz Titan, and Emerald Garuda.
In Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker, Urianger Augurelt may change his job into Lythomancer, a special breed of Summoner, in The Mothercrystal trial when the player is a Healer.
Story[]
History[]
In the Third Astral Era, the Allagan Empire strove to conquer the star. As the war of conquest dragged on, the primal summoning rituals of the Empire's enemies grew more desperate. During these conflicts a new breed of mage arose, who could transform the stolen essences of primals into allies—aetheric servants known as "egi", that were employed to great effect in the war against the summoned divinities. The Allagan people named these arcane adepts Summoners.
The Empire saw the emergence of mages who wield summoning magic to further their own ambitions. The once heroic reputation of Summoners was sullied, and people came to believe that those who practiced the art were tainted by the primals' influence. Vilified and hunted by the superstitious, Summoners fell in number until both their existence and their knowledge faded from the Empire.
Arcanist[]
The early Arcanist class quests focus on training under the supervision of Foreseer K'lyhia, starting with routine cargo inspection exercise. She later has the adventurer accompany her to investigate shady dealings with a goblin merchant, and prepares strategy to deal with likely hostilities. The turning point is at the level 15 class quest, "Over the Rails", when an official inspection of a merchant vessel Morningstar is revealed to be the notorious pirate captain Doesmaga. A man from her past, he tosses her grimoire overboard as she trembles before him.
She attempts to retrieve the salvaged grimoire from black market traders at Oschon's Embrace with aid from Thubyrgeim and the adventurer. The grimoire was too damaged by saltwater to be of any use, sinking her into the depths of depression. The adventurer seeks out K'rhid Tia, the eccentric absentee guildmaster. After fulfilling odd tasks for him, he hands over a new grimoire asking it be given to K'lyhia. Receiving it snaps her out of her glum disposition and motivates her to to return to duty.
The final class quest, "Sinking Doesmaga", K'lyhia puts into motion a plan to defeat her nemesis and bring him into custody. With the adventurer's aid, she arranges to be smuggled on-board disguised as a dancer, while the adventurer poses as a merchant. The two corner the pirate and defeat him with arcanima, whose attempt to escape overboard is thwarted by Yellowjacket coast guard that capture him outside the galleon.
With the chains of her past behind her, K'lyhia sets out to look for the wayward K'rhid Tia. As a final lesson, Thubyrgeim teaches the spell "Bane" to the adventurer.

Job quests[]
After completing their training at Mealvaan's Gate, acting guildmistress Thubyrgeim tells of a new job opportunity from a researcher of the Sons of Saint Coinach, who can be met at Apkallu Falls in Gridania. The scholar, Y'mhitra, mentions the discovery of an unearthed soul crystal belonging to Allagan practitioners of summoning magic who could draw upon the power of primals in an arcanima form called "egi". As the adventurer was both an accomplished arcanist and defeated the Lord of the Inferno, Ifrit, at the Bowl of Embers, she believes they are perfect for restoring the lost art. Traveling to the Sagolii Desert, the wellspring of fire-aspected aether is perfect for performing a ritual called Austerities of Flame, where Ifrit-egi is called forth and defeated in battle. With the primal bound to the soul crystal, the egi can be summoned.
Following further training and a showdown with the Lord of Crags at the Navel, the Austerities of Earth is performed at the earth-aspected environment in Alder Springs. After binding control of Titan-egi, a dark summoner attacks them, demanding they surrender the soul crystal. He is driven off, with Y'mhitra shaken by the mysterious assailant. Further factchecking reveals he was a former Immortal Flames soldier named Tristan Nightflicker, and has an old war comrade stationed in Little Ala Mhigo. Attempting to ask him about Tristan prompts an ambush, as he is working on his behalf and knows they are searching for him.
To better deal with the dark summoner, Y'mhitra suggests the adventurer get outfitted with Allagan garments of the Summoner. The scholars at Saint Coinach's Find agree to hand over intact pieces once several mirrorknights are driven away. Now outfitted with Evoker garments, Y'mhitra believes it is time to perform the Austerities of Wind and draw the power of the fallen Garuda. Drawing the egi to the wind-aspected Floating City of Nym, they defeat the tempestuous shade of the Lady of Vortexes and bind its power.
In the final quest "Primal Burdens", Tristan has begun attacking Saint Coinach's Find, intent on confiscating Summoner soul crystals. He is confronted at the Singing Shards, where he is making deals with the Ascian of the Twelfth Chalice. In exchange for the soul crystal, the Paragon agrees to endow him with the egi of a long-forgotten elder primal named Belias. Tristan uses the ancient egi in a pitched battle, resorting to absorb its power. The adventurer prevails against the dark summoner, who reveals he had to put down his brother Kahedin after he was tempered by Ifrit, and vowed to eradicate primals. As he dies, he immolates.
Though Tristan is defeated, Y'mhitra realizes that the Ascians' machinations will risk besmirching summoning magic, and agrees to not let that happen. As a final lesson, she teaches the spell of Enkindle, a technique to awaken the latent power of the egi.
In the optional quest "A Relic Reborn (Veil of Wiyu)", Gerolt Blackthorn is flabbergasted to learn the adventurer had restored the lost art of summoning. He recalls a centuries-old legend about of a summoner named Wiyu, known for her distinctive green eyes. He agrees to try to help restore the ancient summoner's grimoire.
Heavensward[]
Y'mhitra has presented her research on the summoning arts to her colleagues who agreed to present them with new tomestones. Rammbroes notes that they might be able to draw upon the power of Leviathan, Ramuh, and Shiva. The Singing Shards have an abundance of lightning-aspected aether, but try as they might, Ramuh-egi would not come to them. Perplexed, Y'mhitra returns to her studies to understand what went wrong.
She uncovers a new Summoner spell. Before she can teach it, they are approached by Dancing Wolf of the Immortal Flames, who claims that a black-robed summoner matching Tristan's description had attacked a caravan in Eastern Thanalan. Confused by this development, they travel to Camp Drybone and speak with survivors, who confirm the assailant used Ifrit-egi. Regrouping at the Hall of Flames in Ul'dah, they learn that another attack occurred on miners in Central Thanalan. The survivor confirmed the nature of the attacker, and indicated he was after crystals. Y'mhitra concludes he must be trying to summon a primal. Dancing Wolf realizes that many recent attacks attributed to Amalj'aa were likely due to Tristan.
With increased patrols in Thanalan, the attacks on trading routes have largely ceased. Dancing Wolf believes it is time to draw out Tristan with a sting operation. Arranging for a shipment of crystals to break down in Northern Thanalan, they lie in wait to ambush the dark summoner. The adventurer defeats the silvery-haired black-robed mage with Ifrit-egi outside the convoy. As Dancing Wolf examines the body of "Tristan", he recoils upon seeing the man is the long-dead Kahedin. The Ascian of the Twelfth Chalice makes his presence known, expressing frustration over losing the two brothers as pawns to the Bringer of Light. Dancing Wolf vows to get vengeance for Tristan and Kahedin, but Y'mhitra warns that combating an immortal Ascian is no simple task.
Through further research in the tomestones, she learns why the Austerities of Lightning failed: the adventurer's aetheric reserve had reached maximum capacity with the three egis acquired earlier, and thus Ramuh-egi would not appear. She finds an alternative technique, Trance, which bypasses the egi limit by meditating upon the power of the primal. To combat an immortal Ascian, they need a Trance of an exceptionally powerful primal. The best candidate is the very primal that ravaged Eorzea in the Calamity: Bahamut. The extent of his wrath had exposed nearly all Eorzeans, the Warrior of Light included. By meditating at the site of Dalamud's break-up in the Carteneau Flats, the Dreadwyrm Trance should be achievable. As the Flats remain a restricted area, Dancing Wolf arranges to smuggle Y'mhitra and the adventurer there under the cover of night. Within the Heliodrome, the meditation is disrupted by the Ascian of the Twelfth Chalice, who assaults them with various egi.
Despite the onslaught, the Dreadwyrm Trance is awakened, and with it the egi are banished. Wary at the newly acquired power, the Ascian flees. Y'mhitra wonders why the immortal would back off since there are at least two others present he could use as a host in the event of defeat. She theorizes lesser Ascians are restricted in terms of hosts—namely only the recently deceased—and the long deserted Carteneau Flats would have left the Ascian with no place to go in the event of death. As she learns additional information about the Trance technique, she comes up with a plan to eliminate the Ascian menace.
She claims the secret to fully mastering the Trance, a way to unleash all its power in a singular outburst, will require additional knowledge in a tome stored at the abandoned Great Gubal Library in the Dravanian Hinterlands. Just outside the library, she, the adventurer, and Dancing Wolf are accosted by the Ascian of the Twelfth Chalice. Along with three other minions of Lahabrea, they try to overwhelm the Bringer of Light in an ambush before the secret knowledge could be obtained. This is part of Y'mhitra's ruse: full mastery of the Trance is only required in the heat of battle, which the Ascians provided. The dark Paragons are overcome, and with a the Dreadwyrm Trance fully awakened in the form of a mighty Deathflare, the lesser Ascians are annihilated in the remote Dravanian wilderness.
Stormblood[]
Y'mhitra calls the Warrior of Light, informing them that the Saints of Coinarch has discovered new Allagan relics related to summoning magicks. Upon retrieving the relic, it comes to life and begins speaking to the two. The relic resolves the misunderstanding that it was a monstrous entity, but was instead an enchanted book, named Principia or Prin for short, made by an Allagan summoning master by the name of Sari. Prin's purpose was to train new Summoners, provided they could pass three trials. The first trial was to test the Warrior of Light's aetheric potential. After passing that test, Prin teaches the Warrior of Light a new spell and imparts some Allagan history two the pair: summoning magicks fell out of favor as the Allagans improved their technological prowess.
As the Warrior of Light continued working on the Summoner's arts, Prin and Y'mhitra inform they are ready to take the next of Prin's three trials. With the help of recruits in the Immortal Flames' new Summoner division, led by Dancing Wolf, the Warrior of Light was challenged to best three recruits while displaying mastery of technique. The Warrior of Light passes the test, and Prin rewards the effort with a new spell and more Allagan knowledge: Allagan Summoners fell from grace as heroes of Allag and were persecuted as oppressive tyrants when many started abusing their strength to exert their will over the population. Sari was one of the few honorable Summoners remaining and created him (Prin) even as he had to flee and hide, and Prin was left to collect dust in a forgotten bookshelf while Sari was erased from official records.
Y'mhitra calls upon the Warrior of Light and Prin informs them of their final trial: a real life combat situation to test the Warrior of Light's judgment. Dancing Wolf is permitted to use Seal Rock as the location for the trial, but as they were readying to depart, Y'mhitra receives a distress call from him: an unknown threat has attacked the Immortal Flames Squad. When Y'mhitra, Prin, and the Warrior arrive at Seal Rock, they find several officers wounded and a group of mysterious monsters that appear to be primals seen during Allag's time, but the things they were muttering were things Allagan primals would never have said. The Warrior of Light finds Dancing Wolf fighting an unknown summoner, whom the Warrior forces back. An unknown entity observing the fight noticed that the Warrior of Light possessed an anomalous amount of aether and noted them as a subject for additional observation. Prin catches up and recognizes the assailant as Sari who also recognizes Prin and casts an enchantment to prevent him from revealing the remaining knowledge to the Warrior before retreating. The group retreats back to Ul'dah to debrief. Prin declares that the Warrior of Light has passed the third trial, even with the interruption, as the aim was to measure the nobility of the Summoner. The Sari he knew would not have been as callously destructive as the one they confronted in Seal Rock and Y'mhitra reasons they had confronted an Allagan clone, as the real Sari would be millennia dead. Prin reveals the nature of the enchantment Sari cast before he fled and that Prin cannot impart the knowledge he was meant to give.
Y'mhitra, Dancing Wolf, and the Warrior of Light obtain new journals about Allagan Summoners, particularly those of Sari. After analyzing the records they determine that this doppleganger fled to Azys Lla. When arriving there, the party heads for the Aetherochemical Research Facility. The doppleganger confronts the party, and they realize its true nature: It is a clone generated by the artificial intelligence overseeing the facility's security. The AI intends to replace Sari with a clone of the Warrior of Light, but the party was able to destroy the AI after doing so. The party reviews Sari's final memoirs for clues as to how his clone came to be, and they realized that Sari himself created the computer system; he had become disillusioned and embittered by humanity after seeing his students persecuted and murdered and could no longer trust humanity to safeguard the art of Summoning. Y'hmitra, Dancing Wolf, Prin, and the Warrior of Light return to Old Gridania. Prin imparts the final spell he was meant to teach the Warrior of Light. With his duty complete, Prin returns to its dormant state, sleeping until another Summoner appears and awakens it.

Equipment[]
Arcanists and summoners wield books as their weapons, some of which they share with scholars at lower levels. Their armor is primarily made up of "Casting" gear, armor with low physical defense and high magic defense that they share with other magical DPS classes.
The primary attribute for arcanists and summoners is intelligence, which boosts their attack magic potency, and should always be prioritized over other attributes. As DPS disciplines, they draw the most benefit from the critical hit, direct hit, spell speed, and determination secondary attributes, which all improve their damage dealing capabilities in some way.

Job Gauge[]
The Job Gauge was introduced in 4.0 Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood. Arcanist and both of its jobs use Aetherflow Gauge. The Summoner uses the Trance Gauge instead.
In 6.0 Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker, the Summoners receive an overhaul to their Trance Gauge. When they learn the action Aethercharge, the Trance Gauge will be displayed, showing the amount of time remaining for Aethercharge.
Aethercharge will grant Ruby Arcanum, Topaz Arcanum, and Emerald Arcanum. Using these will allow the Summoner to summon from the choice of three pets by performing Summon Ruby, Summon Topaz, or Summon Emerald, gaining the attunement that is associated with it. Attunement stacks and their duration will be displayed on the Trance Gauge. When the Summoner achieves level 90, they gain Summon Ruby II, Summon Topaz II, or Summon Emerald II, fully summoning the primals associated.
When the Summoner summon a pet, they will gain the aether that is associated with it. Aether stacks and their duration will be displayed on the Trance Gauge. They will change the qualities of Gemshine and Precious Brilliance (acquired at level 26). Upon learning the trait Elemental Mastery (acquired at level 86), Astral Flow will change to match the type of attunement.
When the Summoner learns the trait Aethercharge Mastery, the Trance Gauge will be displayed, showing the amount of time remaining for Dreadwyrm Trance, granting Ruby Arcanum, Topaz Arcanum, and Emerald Arcanum. While Dreadwyrm Trance is active, Ruin III becomes Astral Impulse, and Outburst becomes Astral Flare. Upon learning the trait Enhanced Dreadwyrm Trance at level 70, the Summoner will be able to call forth Demi-Bahamut. The time remaining on Demi-Bahamut's summon will be displayed on the Trance Gauge.
Finally, when the Summoner learns the trait Enhanced Summon Bahamut at level 80, they will be able to call forth Demi-Phoenix, granting Ruby Arcanum, Topaz Arcanum, and Emerald Arcanum. When Demi-Phoenix is on the field, Ruin III will become Fountain of Fire, Tri-disaster will become Brand of Purgatory, and Astral Flow will become Rekindle. The time remaining on Demi-Phoenix's summon will be displayed on the Trance Gauge.

Limit Break[]
Arcanists' and Summoners' Limit Breaks focus on dealing powerful damage to enemies in a circular area of effect. The damage dealt is determined by the combined weapon damage of all party members, thus, its damage is not based on the user's gear. The ability Swiftcast cannot be used to instantly cast a Limit Break. Arcanists and Summoners have the same Level 1 and Level 2 limit breaks as other Magic Ranged DPS.

Behind the scenes[]
Version 1.0[]
The Arcanist class was present in the game data since the beta of the original Final Fantasy XIV, but was never made playable during the original run. Despite not formally appearing as a usable class, it had a guild in Limsa Lominsa in the original game, but it was only used in a few quests. Arcanists were originally planned to fight with magical traps and use a mechanical staff, the latter would be retconned in the Summoner job questline for Stormblood as a device created by Sari of the Allagan Empire.
Relaunch[]
For the launch of A Realm Reborn, the Arcanist was repurposed as a pet class, serving as the prerequisite for the Summoner job, but retained its Limsa Lominsan origins. After being unintentionally leaked on the game's website, the class was officially revealed during the Final Fantasy 25th Anniversary event.[1]
At E3 2013, Naoki Yoshida revealed that the Arcanist would include two branching job options, allowing players to select between the Summoner and Scholar jobs. In addition, the Egi pet concept for the job was also revealed, serving as a reference to the lesser version of Garudas fought in Final Fantasy XII.[2]
Data mined assets from the second phase Beta of A Realm Reborn showed that there were plans to originally give Summoners Ramuh Egi on top of the existing Egis. However, this was not implemented, and no model for the Ramuh Egi existed in the client, although Naoki Yoshida admitted at the "F.A.T.E. in Tokyo" event that a Ramuh Egi was planned as a summon in the future, along with a Leviathan Egi.
Expansion history[]
From A Realm Reborn to the Shadowbringers expansion, Summoner had a kit that focused primarily on casting Ruin and inflicting damage over time (DoT) statuses onto the targets, while also having their summoned pet dealing damage with its own unique combat actions. The choice for the Summoner's focus on DoTs was selected due to time constraints during the development of A Realm Reborn. This style was met with mixed reception from the player base, with many criticizing the job for not feeling like past incarnations of the Summoner. In addition, the job was often criticized for its learning curve and button bloating, which was attributed to players having to balance their DoT timers and manually controlling their pets in end-game content.
Despite initially planning to include more summons in later expansions, it was ultimately decided not to add new Egis for the job in Heavensward for balancing reasons, instead Summoners would gain the Dreadwyrm Trance, which lets them channel Bahamut’s aether. In addition, the Egi Glamour system was added in place for adding alternate forms for each summon, but later updates to the system would later be abandoned for unexplained reasons.
Due to button bloating becoming a problem with many jobs, several player and pet actions were removed at the launch of the Stormblood expansion, while also gaining some new abilities, including the ability to summon Demi-Bahamut.
Summoner received many changes during the Shadowbringers expansion, which lessened the focus on manually controlling pets, while also retooling all Egis to only serve as DPS units. With the inclusion of Demi-Phoenix, Summoners gained several off global cooldowns to manage, adding to the job’s already notorious button bloating issues.
After listening to player feedback on the job's aforementioned problems from previous expansions and feeling that the DoT inspired system was reaching its limits, the game's development team decided to rebuild Summoner for the Endwalker expansion. After several attempts of making the job match the gameplay of Summoners from past titles, the Summoner would shift from a system of treating summons as controllable pets, to one that would have the creatures become beings a player would summon to perform an attack like the traditional titles. In addition, this new system would see the removal of the DoT-styled gameplay and have the Summoner's attacks change elements depending on the summons used.[3]
