{{main|Summon Materia (Final Fantasy VII)}}
Each Summon Materia has five levels. The level of the Materia decides how many times the relevant Summon ability can be cast, with the level matching the number of castings per battle. An exception goes to Master Summon which grants all summons to be cast an infinite amount of times, while the only limiting factor is the MP available to the summoning character.

In this game, Summon Materia is not used in battle - acquiring a Summon Materia adds the summon's portrait to the [[Digital Mind Wave]], and it is then summoned into battle automatically when its portrait lines up on the reels. Besides the normal Summon Materia, other traditional summons can be acquired to the DMW, but they are acquired by collecting items other than Materia.

==Trivia==

*Summon Materia are the only type of Materia that can never be bought in ''Final Fantasy VII''.

*Shiva is the only Summon Materia the player obtains through story line in ''Final Fantasy VII''. Despite this it can still be missed, as if one's Materia inventory is full at the moment it's meant to be given the player will not be given the Materia, and instead can optionally pick it up later.

*If the player's Materia inventory is full, the Kujata Materia will be lost forever. Usually if a player attempts to pick up a Materia when the inventory is full, the game will notify the player and ask them to remove Materia first. Due to poor programming this never happens with Kujata; the player merely receives the message that they have acquired the Materia, but upon entering the Materia inventory the Materia is not there, as there was no room to place it in.

Summon Materia costs MP to use, and equipping any Summon Materia adds the Summon command to a characters' commands menu. However, Summon Materia is typically unique and hard to find. A player can still have multiple versions of the other Summon Materia through mastering. All Summon Materia sells for only 1 gil.

Etymology

Evocation is the act of calling upon or summoning a spirit, demon, god or other supernatural agent, in the Western mystery tradition. Comparable practices exist in many religions and magical traditions and may employ the use of mind-altering substances with and without uttered word formulas.

Materia means "matter" or "substance" in Latin, Spanish, and Italian; it also means "subject" in Italian and Spanish, and is the root of Portuguese "Matéria".
