Subversion materia is a Magic Materia Magic Materia in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. It provides spells that remove positive status effects from enemies. The first spell, Breach Breach, removes the Barrier Barrier, Manaward Manaward, Reflect Reflect, and Shield Shield effects, while Dispel Dispel can remove all positive statuses.

Subversion materia can be paired with Warding Materia Warding Materia to provide resistance to Instant Death.

Obtained[]

Subversion materia is bought from shops for 3000 gil apiece from chapter 9, "The Planet Stirs", onward. The first place that sells it is Gongaga. One is also found in the Gongaga Reactor, beside the bench before encountering Specimen H1024.

During chapter 13, "Where Angels Fear to Tread", there is another subversion materia to the right of the bench in the Hall of Life.

Use[]

Subversion materia allows the user to remove positive statuses from a target. Many harder enemies and bosses rely on these statuses and can use them to nullify or greatly reduce physical or magic damage in battle, meaning that the player is normally restricted to using another form of damage against them. Subversion materia instead grants ways to get around this issue and make them vulnerable to all damage types.

The subversion materia also provides many attribute bonuses that benefit spellcasters. However, the spells themselves do not rely on the user's attributes other than their MP pool, meaning it can be given to any party member with spare MP available. If a party member is geared toward one form of damage, it is often ideal that they equip subversion materia so they are not nullified by an enemy.

Subversion materia's other use is being paired with warding materia to provide Instant Death immunity. Doing this can free up an accessory slot and can be essential in a number of fights against enemies that use Instant Death (as players may otherwise need to rely on Reraise Reraise).
