Uses mainly wind attacks, like Wind Slash, Rage, and Aero. His Wing attack can kill on the spot, so defend with Golem. Thunder Shield also makes a good defense.

The Storm Dragon is a boss in Final Fantasy VI. It is one of the eight legendary dragons, and is the dragon of the Wind element. It is located in Mt. Zozo, near the mountain's save point. Not far from the save point is a switch that opens a treasure chest, releasing the Storm Dragon to fly around the cavern, attacking the player when it comes in contact. This makes the Storm Dragon the only enemy that can be fought when standing on a save point.

Despite likely being one of the first of the eight legendary dragons the player faces, it is arguably the most difficult to defeat, possessing the most HP and a variety of group-hitting attacks. As with the other dragons, it is re-fought in the Dragons' Den bonus dungeon in the Advance, mobile and Steam releases. Both versions of the Storm Dragon can be further re-fought in The Soul Shrine, as with the most bosses in the game.

Battle

First battle

FFVI Storm Dragon Location iOS

Storm Dragon's location.

The Storm Dragon attacks with Rage, Wind Slash, Aero, and Cyclonic, the latter of which is especially dangerous since it puts the party in critical status leaving it vulnerable to being wiped out if Storm Dragon uses Aero on its next turn. Its special attack, Wing Sabre, deals high damage to a single target, and it counterattacks often. The Storm Dragon is weak to Lightning.

Strategy

Equipment that nullifies Wind-elemental damage is helpful: the Thunder Shield and the Minerva Bustier both work for this. Leaf Swirl is non-elemental and cannot be negated.

Thundaga, Flare, and Ultima spells are most effective. If the player faces the Storm Dragon immediately after acquiring the Falcon, Edgar should attack with his Chainsaw, Sabin should attack with Phantom Rush if he has visited Duncan, and Celes should focus on healing the party while Setzer uses his Slot.

If the player is unable to defeat the Storm Dragon, they should return after recruiting Terra and exploring the Zone Eater's Belly for a second Thunder Shield. With a party of Celes, Terra, and two other characters, the player can divide two Minerva Bustiers and two Thunder Shields among the party and thus negate much of the Storm Dragon's offense. Additionally, Rasp may be used to deprive it of its relatively small MP so that it cannot use Aero or Cyclonic.

Second battle

In the Dragons' Den, the Storm Dragon's Evade and MBlock are high. It still uses Cyclonic, Wind Slash, Aero, and Leaf Swirl, but relies less on them and more on its new special attack, Icarus Wing, which does heavy physical damage. Once its HP is decreased to 25,600, Storm Dragon will attempt to give itself Image and Haste statuses, accompanied by the text "Storm Dragon cloaks itself in wind! Speed and evasion increased!" Storm Dragon is immune to Image and so it only gains Haste status.

Defeating the Storm Dragon shatters the seal of wind and grants the player Edgar's ultimate weapon, the Longinus.

Strategy

It is best to use spells and attacks that cannot miss to fight it. Ultima, Tools, Bushido, Blitzes, and Throw fit the bill.

Etymology

A dragon is a legendary creature, typically with serpentine or reptilian traits, which is featured in the myths of many cultures.

Trivia

  • In the original Super NES release, Storm Dragon's field sprite is black. In the Advance release the dragon's field sprite is blue. This is because the Advance release uses lighter palettes (FFVI Gba vs Snes) than the Super NES release, and thus the formerly black Storm Dragon appears blue.
