Stop is a status in Final Fantasy VII that halts the time counter for the afflicted, preventing their ATB gauge from filling, but also halting time based effects, such as Barrier or Regen. The afflicted appears frozen in space.

Linking Added Effect Materia with Contain, Time, or Choco/Mog in armor makes the character immune to the effect, and these setups in weapons make the party member's normal attacks randomly induce the status onto susceptible targets. Stop is not cured by Esuna, but by DeSpell, White Wind, Angel Whisper, and Aeris's status healing Limit Breaks.

Stop is distinct from Paralyzed in that it lasts longer and the afflicted character's Limit gauge will still fill if they are damaged while in this status.

Use[]

Enemies can be defeated without the need for the status, but it is useful in halting their actions. An easy way to use the status is via Added Effect with Time or Choco/Mog to add a chance of inflicting the status with regular attacks. Time Materia contains this effect even before learning the Stop spell on it. This makes defeating Vlakoradoses faster at the earliest point they can be encountered, for example.

For enemies who use Stop on the player party, manipulating them and using their stop skills against themselves works well, such as the Kimara Bug. It would be especially hazardous to become afflicted with Stop in the Battle Square as the status lasts such a long time.
