Stop can be used by characters with the Time Materia at level 3. It applies the Stop status effect, which freezes the target's ATB gauge speed of the target. This spell effectively disables the enemy and renders them harmless for its duration. However, it has a 60% chance of working, and many larger enemies are immune to it entirely. Additionally, it has a considerable MP cost of 34. This means that, while it has its uses, it is less broadly useful than Slow.
A major drawback to Stop is that alternatives exist with a higher probability. One of these is the spell Freeze, granted by the Contain Materia, that has a 68% chance to inflict Stop when it inflicts Ice-elemental damage. Another is Hourglass, an item which has an 80% chance to inflict the status.
Stop can be amplified with Support Materia. All allows it to attempt to stop all enemies, while Sneak Attack, gives the player a chance to stop an enemy when the battle starts. It can also be used with Added Cut and Steal as well, to guarantee an effect in case it does not work, or Magic Counter, to stop an enemy after they deal damage.
