Final Fantasy Wiki

The Stone Bolts are ammunition for crossbows in Final Fantasy XII. They have a chance of inflicting their target with Disable. Crossbows cannot be equipped without owning some kind of bolts. Owning the Stone Bolts means the player can use an unlimited amount, and bolts do not need a license to be equipped alongside a crossbow. The bolts are metallic for the purposes of the magnetize debuff present in the Vinuskar and Ultima boss battles.

Obtain[]

Original[]

The Stone Bolts are not sold in shops, but sell for 350 gil. However, if the player sells them, they cannot procure them again. The bolts are included in the "Huntsman's Crossbow" set in the bazaar, alongside a Recurve Crossbow. The set costs 9,980 gil and is made by selling a Bundle of Needles, two Festering Fleshes, and five Ice Magicites.

Bundles of Needles are obtained from Cactites and Cactoids on the deserts near Rabanastre, and from the Patient in the Desert quest from giving Dantro's wife the cactus flower. Festering Flesh is stolen from Hyenas in the rainy Giza Plains, and also obtained form some other enemies like the Banshee in the Nabreus Deadlands or the Ghast in the Stilshrine of Miriam. Ice Magicite is obtained from various enemies in the Paramina Rift, and from the Garif Adventurer on the Ozmone Plain.

Zodiac[]

The Stone Bolts set is sold for 800 gil by the Baknamy merchant in the Necrohol of Nabudis. The player could come here early, as soon as they have the Dawn Shard, but the enemies in this area would be very tough to take on at that time.

The Stone Bolts are found in a treasure in Tchita Uplands' The Lost Way (45% chance to appear, 30% chance for an item, 50% chance the item treasure is the Stone Bolts without the Diamond Armlet equipped), Nabreus Deadlands' The Slumbermead (75% chance to appear, 60% chance for an item, 50% chance the item treasure is the Stone Bolts without the Diamond Armlet), as well as the Trial Mode Stage 20 with the Diamond Armlet equipped.

The bolts are still made alongside the Recurve Crossbow in the "Huntsman's Crossbow" bazaar set for the same items as before, but for a cheaper price: 3,500 gil.

Use[]

The Stone Bolts add but 1 point to the crossbow's power but hold the useful Disable status, though it will not work on bosses or hunt marks. The status has a 25% flat chance of working on a target who is not immune to Disable. By using the bolts the player can save a turn from the Time Battlemage from using Disable. However, the status itself is not worth prioritizing over a stronger set of bolts.

As equipment can be swapped on-the-fly, the player could start the battle with the Stone Bolts and then swap to the stronger bolts as soon as the status is inflicted, or to another bolt set with a different ailment. This way the Time Battlemage can keep doing damage, and to keep inflicting new status ailments as well. Disable can be good against the zombies that spawn alongside Adrammelech in the Zertinan Caverns, but the player would need to target them manually and switch targets when the ailment is inflicted. Stone Bolts could be good against the Etém in the optional area of Henne Mines.

The bolts are only useful to procure in the Zodiac versions if the player is using a Time Battlemage.

Aletap Rumors[]

They say there is a point on the body which, struck just so, will stop a man cold in its tracks, unable to move. A skilled marksman could use a fine arrow, thin like a needle, to do this from a distance. That's where stone bolts come in handy. As I'm sure you know, they use bundles of needles to make 'em, so proper width and sharpness are guaranteed. Aim, of course, depends on your arm.
