Removes Petrify and Gradual Petrify.

Description

Stona is a Wht Mag spell in Final Fantasy IX for Dagger and Eiko, used to cure Petrify and Gradual Petrify from one target. Stona is vulnerable to Reflect and would work with Return Magic were an enemy to use it on the player party, but no enemy does.

Obtained[]

Stona is learned from Multina Racket (for both Dagger and Eiko) and Lamia's Flute (just Eiko) for 25 AP. Multina Racket is found at Bohden Gate, and bought from Cleyra, Lindblum (Disc 2), Dragon's Gate, Fossil Roo, Conde Petie, Madain Sari, Treno (Disc 3), and Ipsen's Castle for 750 gil. Lamia's Flute is found at the Iifa Tree and bought for 3,800 gil at Alexandria, Treno, Lindblum, or the Mogshop in Ipsen's Castle.

The earliest the player can get Stona is from the Multina Racket found at the Bohden Gate after the party leaves Lindblum on foot the first time, though Dagger is not in the party then.

Mechanics[]

Stona removes Petrify and Gradual Petrify statuses from one target at the cost of 8 MP in both battle and out of battle in the menu for Petrify. Gradual Petrify makes the afflicted count down until they turn to stone, and Petrify means the afflicted cannot act or change status in any way besides being cured of petrification, which does not expire with time; the afflicted is flagged as defeated until cured for Game Over purposes.

The support ability that affects Stona is Reflect-Null, which allows Stona to pierce target's Reflect, however, petrified targets can't have status effects.

In Eiko's Trance, her Wht Mag becomes Dbl Wht, which lets her use two White Magic spells on her turn; both spells expend MP and Trance gauge separately.

Stona does not instantly defeat stone-type enemies like Soft does.

Use[]

Stona lets the player cure Gradual Petrify and Petrify from a target, however, Jelly is an easily learned support ability and both statuses can also be cured with Soft. However, Stona is still a good and cheap way to remove them, and Softs could be saved for instantly defeating stone-type enemies rather than for status-healing. As Petrify flags the afflicted as defeated, it is imperative to cure them at the earliest.

In Eiko's Trance, she can use Stona on two party members on her turn or with another spell, e.g. to both cure Petrify and restore HP.

Etymology[]

The suffix -na is derived from Japanese Naoshi ((ナオ)()?) meaning "cure".
