Unleash a flurry of powerful strikes. Increases strength of next command executed.

Description

Starshower is an ATB ability for Tifa in Final Fantasy VII Remake, provided by the Feathered Gloves Feathered Gloves, which deals physical melee damage. Tifa strikes a battle pose at an opponent and stands in place, before leaping into a flurry of attacks, and then performing a combo of nine strikes that surround the enemy, dealing increasingly higher damage, pummeling her target from above. The final strike lands in front of an enemy, dealing high area-of-effect damage. After using Starshower, follow-up attacks can deal extra damage.

Obtained[]

Starshower is provided by Feathered Gloves, and learned by using Starshower and then immediately following up with one of Tifa's abilities or a magic spell, repeated until the weapon's proficiency bonus reaches 100%.

Mechanics[]

A unique ability attached to Tifa's Feathered Gloves. Incredibly powerful when chained with other abilities. Any offensive ability executed immediately after Starshower will deal a large amount of damage.

Starshower increases the damage dealt by Tifa's next ability (when used directly after Starshower) by 70%. This applies to her Triangle commands, abilities, magic spells, and limit breaks.

Use[]

Starshower is Tifa's most powerful ability, and is core to her moveset. It deals tremendous sustained physical damage to a single target over several blows, and greatly increases the strength of the next command executed. This fits within Tifa's moveset, as she relies on performing her abilities together in combo, by allowing the next ability she uses to hit harder.

As it deals physical damage, Starshower relies on Attack Power Attack Power, but her high Speed Speed allows her to make the most use of it by charging up a second ATB gauge quickly, which will allow her to follow it up with a second ability for a large damage boost. Starshower deals great damage on its own, and a follow-up ability is not required, but using it in this way is the optimal use for it. It has a slower animation than her other abilities, with a long windup time, but is well worth using considering its high damage and utility, as well as its high interrupt defense.

A great use for Starshower is with Unbridled Strength, which grants Tifa access to Omnistrike, meaning Tifa can use Starshower on an enemy and immediately follow it up with powerful burst damage from Omnistrike, which itself does not need an ATB charge. Starshower is best followed up with Tifa's strong abilities and techniques, such as Divekick, another Starshower, her Unbridled Strength techniques, a powerful spell, or a limit break.

Starshower should be used generally to increase damage dealt by Tifa's attacks. If used before a limit break, this can allow Dolphin Flurry to deal a huge amount of damage. Tifa can also be built for dealing massive magic damage by following up Starshower with a spell. If she is inside an Arcane Ward and casts an offensive spell after using Starshower, the bonus spell will not gain the damage boost.

During Starshower's animation, Tifa is evasive and will be highly resistant to being interrupted. Starshower can therefore be used straight into Focused Strike to allow her to keep up a damage combo mostly uninterrupted, if needed. Since the damage boost only applies directly afterward, this is a better choice than being interrupted and losing the bonus.

Starshower complements Tifa's existing moveset, meaning it can be relied upon often in a wide variety of circumstances. Its best uses are setting up another ability in a combo, or in certain cases to avoid some attacks while dealing damage. It can also be used to keep some enemies stun-locked while dealing heavy damage, since each hit can interrupt many enemies.

The below combos are the most optimal for maximum damage on Tifa (based on the power of the move):

  • Starshower (580) → Starshower +70% (986) → Dolphin Flurry +70% (5,032) = (6,598 total)
  • Starshower (580) → Starshower +70% (986) → Rise and Fall +70% (663) = (2,229 total)

It is also possible to add on a third-level spell, such as Firaga Firaga, after the first two Starshowers for maximum raw damage when using Refocus, or simply add a third Starshower to the above to conserve MP.

Behind the scenes[]

Starshower was Tifa's most popular ability among survey respondents at 38%, above Unbridled Strength at 13%, and Dolphin Flurry at 11%. The user comment for a respondent listing Dolphin Flurry as their favorite ability referred to its use when powered up by Starshower.[1]

Etymology[]

"Starshower" refers to a meteor shower phenomenon in which meteoroids enter Earth's atmosphere at extremely high speeds on parallel trajectories, lighting up the night sky in one point.

In Japanese, the ability is known as "Overdrive". Overdrive is a term used to describe a mechanism that allows an automobile to cruise at sustained speed with reduced engine speed, leading to better fuel consumption, lower noise and lower wear. Use of the term is confused, as it is applied to several different, but related, meanings.
