Squats is a minigame in Final Fantasy VII Remake, played in the gym in Wall Market by Cloud Strife. It can be played during Chapter 9, "The Town That Never Sleeps".
The minigame is mandatory during the quest "Burning Thighs" in which Cloud will take on Ronnie for the trainee match. Cloud can then compete against Jay for the amateur award, and finally Jules to win the pro award.
The minigame is based on a sequence from the original game where Cloud wins a wig from the Wall Market gym determined by his squats performance.
How to play[]
The minigame is won by performing more squats than the opponent. Cloud will lose if it ends in a tie.
A squat is performed by following a clockwise movement of the button presses, in the order: , , , and . This must match the on-screen rhythm, as well as Cloud's successful movements, and pressing a button too fast before Cloud finishes a motion will cause him to stumble, losing time and killing momentum. The on-screen movement will speed up over time, so to maintain momentum, the player should successfully perform squats and not press buttons before Cloud has finished a movement.
In later matches, during certain points, Cloud will grow fatigued and is caught in a sticking point, during which an on-screen prompt requires the player to repeatedly press one of the buttons. Although later challenges are more difficult, it is more important to be steady and correct than to be quick; maintaining a momentum means that the opponent can still be beaten, as the opponent will make mistakes and stumble on occasion.

Behind the scenes[]
The developers hadn't originally planned to include the squats minigame from the original in the remake, but the on-site game creators viewed it as something that players would be looking forward to and thus wanted to include it.[1]
A similar squats minigame appears in Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII- and Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII- Reunion as homage to the original Final Fantasy VII. This version has less complex motions than the minigame in Remake or even the original game, requiring only a press of the button at the correct timing, which gets faster the more consecutive squats the player completes.
