A cold, taciturn youth who wields a gunblade, a weapon part sword, part gun.

Description

Squall Leonhart is one of the heroes fighting on the side of Cosmos in Dissidia Final Fantasy. A cold taciturn youth who wields a Gunblade—a weapon that is part sword and part gun—he is a master of combos, able to chain together a myriad of attacks. Squall is a loner who is focused on finding the Crystals and defeating his nemesis, Ultimecia. However, during his travels, he is torn between fulfilling his duty and protecting his friends, Zidane and Bartz, who are being targeted by Ultimecia's allies.

He is set to return, along with the other characters from Dissidia, in Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy.

Crystal and Attire

Squall's primary attire is a combined interpretation of both his original outfit from Final Fantasy VIII and the outfit in his Amano artwork. He wears a black leather bomber jacket over a white shirt with black pants and white fur along the collar and top of his pants. He also bears his Griever pendant around his neck, with a Griever buckle on one of his belts. A small sash partially covers his right leg. His alternate costume is his SeeD uniform, a military-style outfit with a black jacket with gold trim held closed by a belt, black pants and knee-high black boots. The jacket's cuffs are red with silver shoulders connected by a chain across the chest.

In Dissidia 012, Squall's third costume is more heavily based on Yoshitaka Amano's original artwork, with Squall wearing a black sleeveless tank top with fingerless gloves and a string of beads wrapped around his left arm, in combination with the belt, sash, pants and boots from his original Dissidia outfit. Squall also has a bonus costume included with the April 2011 issue of V-Jump magazine in Japan, and with the Legacy Edition of Dissidia 012 in the West. In it, Squall dons his attire as "Leon" from Kingdom Hearts. He wears a jacket with shorter sleeves with red Griever emblems on them, no fur ruffles on his pants or collar, longer hair and several belts wrapped around his left arm. His outfit as a whole is a lighter shade of black.

Squall's crystal resembles a silver feathered wing, a recurring theme in Final Fantasy VIII, and it also seems to resemble the shape of a Gunblade.

Squall's Manikin version, Transient Lion, is purplish-pink.

Story

Dissidia 012

In the TGS trailer, he is seen alongside Zidane and Bartz as they meet Kuja, Bartz believing him to be a rarely seen Warrior of Cosmos. In another recent scan, Squall is seen talking to his father, Laguna, questioning why he needs to make friends on the battlefield, to which Laguna responds by mimicking Squall's voice and mocking one of his most famous quotes.

Prologue

As Cosmos explains the need for the Crystals, she transmits illusions of herself to all of her warriors who were separated into small groups due to the battle. Squall, the only warrior save for the Warrior of Light who was on his own, embarks on his quest without concern for its difficulty.

Destiny Odyssey

Dissidia Squall and Bartz

Squall advising Bartz.

Squall rejects Zidane and Bartz's offer to join together after saving them from some manikins. As they depart, Bartz returns and forces a chocobo feather on him, offering it as a good luck charm. Left questioning, he travels alone to Planet's Core where Ultimecia, under guise of Cosmos, questions his rejection and hints at how to get his crystal.

As Ultimecia convinces Garland to assist her, Squall starts to doubt his own decision from Ultimecia's previous questioning. Meanwhile, Kefka convinces Kuja to capture Squall at The Rift in order to further Kuja's own plans to capture Zidane. Things don't go according to plan and Kuja gives up on capturing Squall, telling him to wait for the second act. Squall rejects the thought of trying to warn Zidane and Bartz due to his current situation to find the crystals and continues on.

Squall meets Warrior of Light as his travel leads him to the Crystal World, where Warrior of Light challenges him to prove his conviction of traveling alone. Squall defeats him and says that working in a group is not the only way to work together. Warrior of Light accepts this and leaves, reminding Squall that he is not alone in the war.

Squall and Cosmos

Ultimecia appears to Squall as Cosmos.

Ultimecia appears before Squall once again near the end of his journey in the Old Chaos Shrine. Revealing herself from her Cosmos guise, she commends him on his cold resolve to find his crystal. When he questions this, she explains how he had neglected to help Zidane, and how he thought feelings were inconsequential to the task at hand. Bewildered, he backs down as Ultimecia accepts this and allows him to go free, saying that the time for their confrontation is close at hand. As he continues down his path, Squall confirms to himself that which was important to him - his duty.

Confronting Ultimecia at her castle, he explains what he was doing was not out of abandonment or selfish desire but because of a call of duty. Garland appears and challenges Squall to fight them both to which he does not back down. From above, Zidane sees this event unfold and tackles Garland aside, leaving Squall and Ultimecia to fight alone.

Squall and WoL standoff

Warrior of Light confronts Squall.

After Ultimecia is defeated and Squall obtains his crystal, Zidane explains that he had come across him while looking for Bartz, who had fallen into a trap. As he decides to help, Zidane questions his reluctance, and Squall pulls out Bartz's chocobo feather, saying he has to return it as his crystal points the way towards Bartz's location.

However, as the two arrive at Planet's Core, they run into Bartz, who explains what happened to him. Showing them the crystal he had stolen, Zidane touches the crystal and is teleported away into another trap. As they're searching for Zidane at The Rift, Bartz expresses his guilt for being so easily fooled and being weak. Squall gives the lucky feather back and assists Bartz just as Exdeath appears. Though Squall offers to take the villain down himself, Bartz declines, saying that it is he who has to gain the strength to defeat Exdeath and not someone else. Upon Exdeath's defeat, the lucky feather turns into the crystal that Bartz was searching for. His journey complete, Squall opts to stay with Bartz and Zidane, who has just escaped from the trap by defeating Kuja.

While the three come to rest at Dream's End, having all collected their independent crystals, they begin sharing how each acquired his own, with Squall saying that he had obtained his through the hope born from Cosmos' words.

Dissidia Cloud Squall Tidus

Cloud, Tidus, and Squall talking.

Having defeated his father Jecht, Tidus meets up with Squall and later Cloud as they move to reunite with the other warriors of Cosmos.

Shade Impulse

Squall and Zidane with crystals

Squall and Zidane hold their crystals.

Squall and Zidane rejoin the other eight warriors as they approach Warrior of Light in Order's Sanctuary, where Cosmos waits for them, only to inform them that they were too late. A fully-powered Chaos then appears and incinerates Cosmos. With her death, the side of harmony begins to fall, with light being consumed into the void, including the warriors themselves as Chaos looks on, gloating. Protected by the crystals' power, however, the warriors do not disappear permanently and later reappear in Order's Sanctuary. As the world begins to crumble around them, they begin to make their way to the Edge of Madness, defeating the Chaos warriors along the way.

During the journey, they learn more of the war's endless cycle, and that their worlds were fated to vanish. Cloud theorizes that if they saved this world, then their worlds would be saved as well. Squall reveals that he also was thinking this, recalling a promise he had made, that someone was waiting for him back home. Later on he, along with Cloud and the Warrior of Light, notes that the world's time is nearing its end and that they have to defeat Chaos himself to end the cycle.

Ultimecia struck down

Squall strikes down Ultimecia.

Squall confronts Ultimecia once again in her castle, where Ultimecia tells him that Cosmos' final wish was fulfilled when she died, and that Chaos will soon follow. In addition, Squall learns that Ultimecia wants to create a world of compressed time where all would be able to exist eternally. Squall, wishing to fulfill the promise he made with the person waiting back home, engages her in combat to stop her attempts and emerges victorious. As she begins to fade away, Ultimecia still attempts to compress time, forcing Squall to kill her off before she can do so.

Squall and the Feather

Squall grabs a feather before returning to his world.

After killing Ultimecia, Squall travels to the realm of Chaos in the Edge of Madness with the other warriors of light and confronts Chaos directly. Upon the god's defeat, the previously destroyed worlds are reformed and balance is restored between Chaos and Cosmos. Squall, along with the other heroes, is teleported to Cornelia of the reformed world of the original Final Fantasy, where they return to their own worlds. Squall returns to his own world after catching a white feather, stating that maybe one day, they can all go on another journey together.

Battle

Template:See Also Squall's fighting style is Relentless Revolver. Squall specializes in swift, multi-hit combo attacks that rapidly drain the opponent's Bravery. Almost all of his attacks are melee, but they execute quickly and do heavy damage. Even his magic attacks let him hit multiple times, and can set opponents up for melee strikes. As a downside, Squall has few ranged attacks, and his magical abilities are only mid-ranged. All of Squall's HP attacks require a moment for him to charge before attacking, giving the opponent time to dodge.

Boss

Squall is fought in Distant Glory and Inward Chaos.

EX Mode

Squall's EX Mode
Renzokuken

Squall's EX Mode is Lion Heart Equipped, transforming the Revolver into the Lion Heart, his ultimate weapon from Final Fantasy VIII. Squall regenerates HP due to Regen, and gains the abilities "Lion Heart (RANGE)" and "Lion Heart (HIT)". The first ability increases the range of all of Squall's melee attacks, and the second makes Squall pull the gunblade's trigger when attacking, doubling the number of hits his melee attacks do. His Solid Barrel attack also becomes unblockable.

Squall's EX Burst is Renzokuken, his Limit Break from Final Fantasy VIII. Eight blue bars flash by on a power meter, and the player must tap R as the bars flash by in order to increase the damage done by Squall's attacks as he slashes his opponent eight times. Afterward, Squall finishes the EX Burst with Lion Heart, his strongest finishing move from Final Fantasy VIII, where he dashes past the opponent and strikes them, creating an explosion.
