Spare Change materia is a Command Materia Command Materia in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Its ability, Spare Change, allows the user to throw gil at an enemy in battle to deal damage. The user can control how much gil is thrown in battle, where more gil thrown leads to higher damage output and a longer use of the ability.

Spare Change returns as an ability from the original Final Fantasy VII (named Coin), but originally was the second ability on a different materia, named Throw.

Obtained[]

A spare change materia is found in chapter 1, "Fall of a Hero", near a tree after exiting the cave leading to the reactor in Northern Ridge Foot. However, nothing from the prologue carries over to the rest of the game; the player can use up their gil freely for no adverse effect, such as against the Materia Guardian boss.

Spare change is bought from Chadley in Meridian Ocean for 5 data points after completing all protorelic quests and defeating Gilgamesh.

Use[]

Spare Change costs one ATB charge and throws gil at an enemy for damage. The damage output can be increased by throwing more gil (though the cap for a single throw is 10,000 gil, which is still not overly powerful), and is not increased when an enemy is staggered. During the animation for Spare Change, the user cannot be interrupted.

The damage output of Spare Change is generally much lower than other abilities or spells, making it too expensive to be worth it. However, the ability to be uninterrupted against attacks (including binding attacks) for its duration can have small uses.

Spare Change cannot be used via Gamble.
