Horn inhabited by the spirit of a dragon. Makes the effect of the Jump command continuous.

Description

Soul of Thamasa, also known as Gem Box,[1][2] is a relic in Final Fantasy VI. It changes the basic Magic command to the Dualcast command, which casts two spells in one turn. This makes it extremely powerful for spellcasters in both offensive and defensive contexts. However, the relic is rare, and the player will only have access to one for most of the game.

Betting the Soul of Thamasa in the Dragon's Neck Coliseum pits the player against a Behemoth King (undead) for a Celestriad. As the Soul of Thamasa is a one-in-a-kind relic, the player should not do this even if Celestriad is another top tier relic.

Obtained[]

Soul of Thamasa can be found within Cultists' Tower.

In versions with the Soul Shrine, it can be stolen from Glutturn. Because the Soul Shrine is unlocked at the end of the game, this means a single Soul of Thamasa will be available for most of the game's content.

Use[]

Soul of Thamasa provides no passive bonuses, but the Dualcast command can double turn-efficiency, damage output, and healing capacity of any spellcaster that uses it. This makes it potent to equip on at least one spellcaster, but the rarity of the relic means players should be careful about whom to give it to.

The best candidates for Soul of Thamasa are Terra, Relm, and Celes, due to their high Magic stats and access to female-exclusive equipment. Of these, Terra's Trance allows her to double damage for its duration, Relm has the best Magic stat giving her the highest consistent damage potential, while Celes is naturally suited to a defensive role. Other potential spellcasters are Strago and Gogo, though their lack of female-exclusive equipment makes them less suited to Soul of Thamasa.

Soul of Thamasa can be paired with Celestriad to devastating effect. Celestriad reduces the MP cost of spells to one, making MP no object (short of using a weapon that drains MP for critical hits), allowing the user to use powerful combinations such as two Quick spells and four Ultima or Meltdown spells in one turn, or two Quick spells and four Reraise spells. The only downside to using this is that the user cannot equip a defensive relic, such as Ribbon, making them susceptible to status effects. As Dualcast allows the user to cast Osmose to easily recover MP, if Soul of Thamasa is primarily used defensively, it may be best to pair it with a defensive relic.

If the spellcaster intends to summon the esper of the magicite they have equipped, they should forego Soul of Thamasa.

Etymology[]

The relic is named after the village of Thamasa, where people with secret magic powers reside. After Final Fantasy VI, Soul of Thamasa has become a recurring accessory in the Final Fantasy series.
