The Soul Cannon, also known as Soul Gun, is a boss in Final Fantasy V. It is the main defense of the flying ruins, and the party must defeat it to get inside. Soul Cannon is also one of the wall enemies in the Phoenix Tower, and in the Finest Fantasy for Advance and the now discontinued 2013 Matrix Software versions, it will also appear in the Sealed Temple's Cloister of the Dead.

Battle[]
Apart from its exceptionally high HP, the Soul Cannon is not much of a problem. It is slow, and takes time to charge up its attacks. The Launchers flanking it will attack, though, and can halve a character's HP and inflict the old status. Its other attack, Wave Cannon, can do serious damage, but one can easily predict when it is going to use it. Wave Cannon deals exactly half max HP in damage and inflicts sap on each character. In the now discontinued 2013 version, Wave Cannon can miss if the target has enough magic evasion.
Strategy[]
Blue Magic spell Level 5 Death instantly kills the Launchers.
It is possible to destroy it before the first Wave Cannon by rapidly spamming Lightning-element attacks. Options at this point are:
- Black Mage casting Thundara
- Mystic Knight charging Thundara Sword and attacking
- Ninja throwing Lightning Scrolls
- Summoner summoning Ramuh
- Any rod-wielding class breaking Thunder Rods
The version in the Phoenix Tower can be killed by using Dark Shock and Level 5 death in a combo.
If a character has learned the Hide ability from the Bard job, they can also use it to avoid the damage from the Wave Cannon completely. Since Soul Cannon announces when Wave Cannon is used, it's easy to predict and use hide right before it fires. If the Launchers are eliminated and the character in question also has Blue Magic, they can also be on low health to use ??? dealing high damage to Soul Cannon at little MP cost. Since Soul Cannon's only attack is the predictable Wave Cannon, there's no risk of being on low health as long as it's avoided.

Etymology[]
soul, in many religious, philosophical, psychological, and mythological traditions, is the incorporeal and, in many conceptions, immortal essence of a person, living thing, or object.
TheThe Japanese name, though, cannot be parsed this way, as "soul" would be written as either ソール or ソウル. Rather, the name appears to come from the (Ecclesiastical) Latin word for "sun", thus rendering the interpretation "Solar Cannon".
