Sorrow of Werlyt (ウェルリト戦役, Werurito Sen'eki?, lit. Werlyt Military Campaign) is an optional storyline in Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers. It follows events on the Source as the reformed VIIth Imperial Legion utilises machina based off the Ultima Weapon to fight against Eorzea.

Story[]

Set Up[]

During his inifiltration of the Imperial Capital, former legatus Gaius Baelsar allied with Estinien Varlineau to confront the Emperor. Following Varis Galvus's death at the hands of Zenos Galvus, the two were separated as they made their escape. Estinien would come across a prototype machina based on the Ultima Weapon, and bring it low, but when reuniting with Gaius and informing him of the weapon's existence, the Shadowhunter parted ways with his entourage in tow to investigate it further.

Gaius' inquiries led him to discover the Weapon project, helmed by a reformed VIIth Imperial Legion, and that one of the machina was in an operable state to be deployed against the Eorzean Alliance at Ghimlyt. Gaius and his followers made contact with Alliance commander General Raubahn Aldynn and informed him of the threat. An uneasy truce was forged, and the Shadowhunter would use his knowledge of the Ultima Weapon to contend with the new machina.

After several exchanges, Gaius came to the conclusion that more forces would be needed, or perhaps the helping hand of a particularly experienced individual.

Confrontation with the VIIth[]

Krile Baldesion and the Warrior of Light, the currently remaining active senior members of the Scions of the Seventh Dawn, were invited to Ala Mhigo.

Though the original Ultima Weapon, piloted by Gaius Baelsar, was destroyed in the decisive battle at the Praetorium, Garlemald has been secretly developing its successor. Now, this diabolical melding of Allagan and Garlean technologies has been deployed to annihilate those who would oppose the Empire. At the behest of none other than Gaius Baelsar himself, you cross the scorched battlefield of the Ghimlyt Dark to halt this crimson menace before it lays waste to Eorzea.

The liberation of Terncliff has led to the discovery of vital information regarding the Weapon project. A warmachina code-named "Emerald" is believed to have escaped by sea to an imperial installation, so you and Gaius make your way to Castrum Marinum, one of two likely locations. Retrieved data suggests that your foe is armed with floating manipulators, though how exactly these will be employed in battle remains to be seen.

Intelligence from Werlyt indicates that a previously unknown Weapon is laying waste to the VIIth Imperial Legion's headquarters. Though it seems improbable that the warmachina could turn against its creators, a letter left by Allie reveals her intention to commandeer the Weapon and rescue her brother Alfonse from the imperials. Together with Gaius and Cid, you formulate a strategy not to destroy, but to capture the rampaging machine before any harm can come to its pilot.
