The Soldier's Cap is a mid-ranked light armor headgear in Final Fantasy XII that boosts the wearer's magickal defense by 14 and HP by 110.

Obtain[]

Original[]

The Soldier's Cap is sold for 1,400 gil in Rabanastre after defeating Belias, from Dyce outside Tomb of Raithwall, and in Jahara.

The Soldier's Cap can be rarely stolen from the Great Tortoise, and Adamantitan in the Barheim Passage.

Zodiac[]

The Soldier's Cap is sold for 1,400 gil in Rabanastre after defeating Belias, and from Dyce in Nam-Yensa Sandsea, outside Tomb of Raithwall, and Balfonheim Port. It is found in a treasure in Ogir-Yensa Sandsea's Central Junction (80% chance to appear, 40% chance for gil, 50% chance the item treasure is the Soldier's Cap without the Diamond Armlet equipped), Nam-Yensa Sandsea's Simoon Bluff (75% chance to appear, 30% chance for gil, 50% chance the item treasure is the Soldier's Cap without the Diamond Armlet equipped), Tomb of Raithwall's Northfall Passage (80% chance to appear, 30% chance for gil, 50% chance the item treasure is the Soldier's Cap without the Diamond Armlet equipped), and Phon Coast's The Vaddu Strand (in the beach treasure formation; always appears), as well as in Trial Mode Stage 41 with the Diamond Armlet equipped.

It is still the rare steal from Great Tortoise and the Adamantitan in Barheim Passage.

Use[]

The Soldier's Cap is a mid ranked light armor hat, giving 14 magick resist and 110 HP, and is useful to equip over any inferior equipment the party may have. However, in the original version where everyone can wear any equipment piece, the more expensive heavy armor helm, Golden Helm, or the mystic hat Lambent Hat, may be a preferable purchase if the player can stretch their funds to them, as the HP boost from light armor is not usually worth prioritizing over heavy armor that boosts Strength for physical attackers, or mystic armor that boosts Magick Power for spellcasters.

In the Zodiac versions, Machinist, Monk, Archer, and Shikari can equip the Soldier's Cap, and so it is only useful to buy if the player has chosen these License Boards for their party. In The Zodiac Age, after fighting Belias, the player can choose two License Boards per party member, and so more party members can choose from the potentially more useful heavy and mystic armor sets.

Behind the scenes[]

Secret-Treasures-Phon-Coast-FFXII-TZA

Treasure chest formation on the Phon Coast.

In the Zodiac versions, the Soldier's Cap is found in an eye-catching treasure formation on Phon Coast's Vaddu Strand. The other treasures include items like Teleport Stones and Braid Wool not normally found in treasures, this being a clue that this set of treasure chests holds a secret. Taking the first Japanese character/syllable of each treasure going from east to west produces three words that are portions of the Japanese names for the Great Crystal, Pharos - First Ascent, and Skyferry, the locations of the three strongest invisible weapons and shield, Gendarme, Great Trango, and Seitengrat, respectively. The clue is lost in the English localization.
