Soft reset (ソフトリセット, Sofuto Risetto?) is a controller-input command that allows the player to quit their game progress and return to the game's title screen, similar to the result of a Game Over. Its key difference to resetting the console is that it does not exit the game. This has been utilized in some games through the Memo File system where the player can save it to the console memory and not to the memory card. The memo save feature is quicker and stays accessible until the console has been interrupted by being reset or switched off.

To cause a soft reset, the player must simultaneously press the shoulder buttons and a number of other buttons depending on the console. Due to the placements of the buttons and rare usage during gameplay, it is hard to accidentally command a soft reset, but not too difficult to command a soft reset when necessary. Usually, a soft reset is feasible any time during gameplay.
